Restoring aluminium trim.

I made this video last year while I was working on my 1970 Ford F-250 Camper Special. The trim was HORRIBLE! I spent hours looking on the internet for how-to's but never really had much luck and the local shops I went to basically told me the stuff was junk. I forgot to mention in the video that I had to start using 100 grit paper on the grill to remove all of the scaling and worked my way up to 600 grit.

Most aluminum auto trim is anodized from the factory to keep it looking bright .when restoring it takes a lot of sanding to get all the anodizing off ,any spots you miss will look a little dull .I use oven cleaner to get most of the heavy anodizing off then start sanding from there . hope this helps !

Looks great! Just started working on the trim on my '86 F150. Started wet sanding with a drill and 500 grit sanding disk. Was wondering how low to go with the grit. Guess I can go a bit lower. I'll have to try the mothers. Been using Noxon and Never Dull. Works ok but looks like Mother is a bit nicer. I'll go a few grades higher in grit too. Have only gone up to 800 so far but results have been incredible. More wider range of paper grit should make the job easier.

I restore a lot of older Mercedes which have a lot of Bright anodized trim. They got the shiney effect by polishing the trim to a mirror finish,then it's washed and dipped in "bright anodizing solution" which holds the finish lustre,then it's anodized normally. That's basically sulfuric acid with a current running through the parts to harden the surface.The bright finish dip is the hardest to get done as it requires the fluid to be kept warm constantly .A damned expensive process.

The vid was great and I'll be sure to try this for my 72 ranger but I was wondering if you had any way to seal it? my sister has a 66 we cleaned up and we clear coated the aluminum after polish but the coat is pulling together and no longer sits in the groves and I didn't want the same to happen to mine. if there's any other way other than normal polishing of the parts, id like to hear them. thanks

+116falconer Thanks. my car only has 25,000 original miles and has been garaged almost it's entire life so it's not in terrible shape. However, I plan to take my time, start with 100 grit and work my way up to 1500 grit. It's a project for my son and I.

your doing a great job understanding what your doing ' to make the job easier get a auto buffer to use with the mothers. be sure to protect your paint . finish sanding with 1200 paper to make the buffing faster ... nice truck !! but needs a nice set of aluminum wheels to brighten up the paint. good job dude.

I am also restoring some aluminum trim & molding on a 67 dart. After some research I discovered that ALL aluminum trim from the factory was anodized, and that is the top layer you are removing down to the aluminum. Which is fine, it looks great and the only drawback is upkeep. I have my car completely disassembled and doing each piece individually. The big decision will be wether to re-anodized after they are all polished.
@116falconer
@116falconer 7 лет назад
+doacarnage all I can say is that the trim holds up freaking awesome. I hit it once a year with some mothers and it's good till the next year. I did a revisit video in February cause someone had the same concerns as you, check it out and you might be surprised.

@1972FordF150 You nailed it, just about 10mpg. My truck has a 360 and everything I've read says they are the worst on mileage but if they are rebuilt to a 390 you will increase the mpg by around 20%.
@MattsRageFitGarage
@MattsRageFitGarage 12 лет назад
@116falconer I hope so too, this truck has sit for 11 years so it needs some work, but it doesn't seem too bad for 400 bucks. Guy had it running needs some carburetor work etc like that. By the way what do you get for MPG on yours? I'm guessing around 10-12 MPG.

@116falconer
@116falconer 9 лет назад
If it's plated I think not but if it's polished yes it will. If it's polished with a clear coat over it you'll have to sand through the clear coat first, for the front grill of my truck I had to use a random orbital sander with 80 grit paper to cut through the scaling and clear coat then hand sand up to 600 wet.
@JesseCervantes312
@JesseCervantes312 9 лет назад
that's where i can't figure it out. i'm not to good with knowing the difference between the two.

Go to Wally World or a auto parts store and get a small jar of Mothers polish then try using a damp rag to apply it, if that doesn't work get a NON-SCRATCHING Scotch Brite pad and try that. Make sure to try in an inconspicuous area first. If you could post a video I might be able to help you further.
@JesseCervantes312

@116falconer
@116falconer 12 лет назад
@1972FordF150 I believe it has to do with the stroke. If I remember correctly Ford had the 390 and wanted a smaller displacement engine so they just chopped the stroke on the 390 and ended up with the 360. With that the engine as a whole has to work harder causing it to burn more fuel.

the best way is to remove it, strip it, polish and re anodize. the cost is well worth it and it looks period correct. i just restored my 65 rambler American 440 convertible and re anodizd every part that came anodized and it came out looking new again.!! do it right the first time!
@116falconer
@116falconer 7 лет назад
+tony goulart I suppose you are correct but for a few bucks in sandpaper and lots of elbow grease my trim still shines like new. If I had a classic car that was worth spending the money on I'd do it your way but as I'm sure you know classic trucks don't bring in the long dollar.
@MattsRageFitGarage
@MattsRageFitGarage 12 лет назад
@116falconer The 360 is a 390 block with the 352 crank and rods. Also I think they have these 360's factory retarded like 4 degrees and that causes them to burn even more fuel and lack some more power.
@danieleickstedt8702
@danieleickstedt8702 5 лет назад
The original had an anodized coating on it. When you sand it, you remove that and you will always need to put a lot into polishing as it will tarnish more easily.

But it looks dull and milky the way it is. Do you know a way to make it shine without removing the anodizing?
