This was a great adventure. The Yugo was a great little car imported from the former Yugoslavia from 1986 to 1991. It sold very well it's first few years and was on track to be a huge it in the USA. Then Jay Leno made a few jokes about the car on late night TV, and the downward spiral started.
This ultra affordable car never got a fair shake after that, and quickly ended up as the car no one wanted to be seen in.
Truth is, these were reliable, fuel sipping cars that only needed minor repairs every now and again. Sadly in 1991 the US bombed the factory and while Yugo's continued to roll off the lines until 2008, they never returned to our shores.
I really liked working on this car, and driving the finished project. I sometimes wish I'd never parted ways with it.

Born in Yugoslavia in the 70s Id see these all over back home in the 80s. It so fun and amazing that guy in the US today can enjoy what is basically a reworked FIAT-construction from the 60s! Thanks for a great vid!

They really are great cars. It's sad that they didn't stick around here in the USA. I'd love to have seen what they came out with next.

@@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs They made Yugo Florida, modern 5 door hatchback, which was really good car in late 80's and early 90's, also Yugo Cabrio. If you need parts, I am from the city where this bad boy was made, there are plenty of cheap parts, and cars you can buy for peanuts. You can see brief history on all Zastava-Yugo cars ever made: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tZuWP_q3oCs.htmlsi=5h3yAQJ1yi-XcjHc

Erik/Jenn, thank you for the trip down memory lane. As previoisly discussed, I inherited a running Yugo from my Uncle when he passed. I drove it into Boston, about 30 miles, 5 days a week for almost 2 years. I was lucky, I found an honest mechanic who took good care of it for me. Tbe sound of the engine brought me right back. It was a great car and I loved dtiving it.
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
That is awesome! A good daily driver for sure!

I remember back in 1988...I was 17, had a '74 Beetle with a 1776 and a Weber 2 barrel....being from out off of Ten-Ten, there wasn't a lot to do, so we'd drive out to Crabtree Valley Mall.....a lot. We'd gone out there again, and smack dab in the middle of the mall, they were showcasing 2 of those cars. A red one and I think the other was a cream color. I hate to admit it but I fell in love with the red one. I thought it was a cool car! And only $3490....which I did NOT have. Coolest part to me? The placement of the spare tire. Right in front of the steering wheel....lol And it being a straight drive too? I thought it was a neat car. But.....not neat enough to part with my VW...lol GREAT find, and GREAT video, Eric! Hope y'all have a great Christmas. We're wavin' from the 'Quay

Ha, I have been to Crabtree many times in the good old days-

Cosmetically speaking she looks to be in fantastic shape. As far as the mechanics go well you're a mechanic. So you're going to save a bundle of money on repairs. It's worth it and if it's the first car you were really interested in hey man you got to fulfill your dreams. Nothing wrong with that dude. Just get ready to be the brunt of some jokes. Lol. Hope you and yours have a very merry Christmas eric. Be safe.

I'm buying an 88 Yugo GVX Sunday that includes a parts car, really looking forward to it. It's still running with approximately 60,000 miles.
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
That sounds great- I hope that you enjoy the restoration and the journey that it will take you one. Good Luck

Wow that looks to be in good shape for the age. I looked at one that was traded in, I think it was only 1 maybe 2 years old. I was looking it over and it needed a bunch of little things. Things that normally don't go bad for many many years were broken. Like the vent window latches, they didn't hold the vent windows closed. I could stick my fingers through the gap and open the vent windows and then unlock the doors. As a kid, I thought I can fix all the little stuff. I really needed a truck and ended up getting a used truck instead. Later I saw one sitting for sale and was looking into buying it and I was told that I could buy it, but once it transfered I wouldn't be able to register it and run it on the road again. I got busy with work and never got to find out if that was true or what I would need to do to make it road worthy again. Maybe that was a PA thing? Good luck with fixing it up.

I had a Yugo when I was a teenager. I had the sport version. Which means it came with a sunroof and a spoiler. It could also go 70 miles an hour down hill.

I looking at installing ac on my 128 is the crank pully a double pulley? How are the belts routed for all the accessories? Enjoy the car there lots of fun
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs 5 месяцев назад
It is a single belt. It runs the AC, Alt, and Air pump. I found the AC not to drain too much power from the motor.

The second job I ever had was at a olds/ caddy/Nissan dealership. Had like 30 and I had to move a bunch of them to a different location on the lot. Wow.. worst shift linkage ever..every one else moving them Said the same thing can't find gears. Also not good if well over 6 ft . That's all I can say . So if the shifter feels messed up .. they came that way.

Back then cars were just that basic transportation
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs
@FarpointRestorationsAndRepairs 10 месяцев назад
The way that they should be! My Mitsubishi Mirage is the last of the era of basic transportation. It's dead as of 2025. The spark is gone, the metro is gone, the Versa is now the size of a Maxima in the 90's. Cars these days are a joke.
