Tom Johnson of Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restoration in Gorham, Maine restores two pairs of vintage Dansk utensils designed by Swedish master silversmith Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe: two cheese slicers and two knives whose almond-shaped teak handles had become rough and dry, having likely been subjected to repeated cycles through a dishwashing machine. Tom has been restoring furniture professionally since 1979. Visit our website at www.thomasjohns..., or write us at thomasjohnsonrestoration@gmail.com. And for those on the west coast looking for custom framing, be sure to check out Tom's daughter's shop, www.emcollier.com (@emcollierframes on Instagram).

My Dansk cheese cutter and Dansk wooden-handled serving spoons (not part of this video) have never seen the dishwasher and I've avoided letting them sit in water, so they still look pretty good, but after 50 years it's time to refresh and protect them. Thank you for this demonstration. BTW, it was fun to see you use the knife along with the Dansk teak tray, which I also have. I've been a real Dansk fan since the late 60's.

Thanks! I am so glad you've never put them in a dishwasher! Honestly, I can't believe that people do that. Imagine how many pieces have been ruined. These were for a friend, I wish I had the small sauce pan!

So great Tom! I love all the mid century stuff. I always find the design so much more satisfying even if though it's only a vessel for the content on this channel. That teak threw so many obstacles at you! I think it being 'dishwashered' contributed to the wood itself flaking/cracking off multiple times at different stages. Then to top it off it made the dye job hard by turning out to be incredibly dark teak! For what should have been a simple job that turned into quite a hardship. But you saw it through and made it look great as per usual.

For the repair patch, would it work if you drilled out the burn with a forstner bit and replaced the removed material with a circular piece? It would probably be much easier to line up the grains and get an exact fit. Also, I love that you’re in Gorham, ME. I just bought a house in Jay about a year and a half ago.

You looked like you were really enjoying the cheese and crackers at the end of the video. Great utensils like those probably make the cheese taste better. I randomly came across your videos and they are oddly fascinating to me. You do some amazing work turning beat up wood into like new. However, that patch looks terrible. It is highly visible. Wouldnt it have make more sense just to replace that half of the handle?
@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 6 лет назад
Yes, despite my best efforts at matching the wood, the color wasn't quite right. Someone suggested I should have replaced the entire piece, maybe they're right. But I would have had to drill out the wooden dowel between both sides, it would get complicated. I'm used to working on antiques where the goal is to save as much of the original as possible, so I guess that's where I'm coming from. Thanks for commenting. "oddly"?

@johnsonrestoration
@johnsonrestoration 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching! That is Waterlox Sealer/Finish www.waterlox.com/original
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 6 лет назад
From a technical standpoint - Waterlox isn't really oil, it's a varnish. It is tung oil with phenolic resin in it. One of my favorite finishes as it continues to cure for about 3-4 months and gets extremely hard. It is also a food-safe finish and can be used as a finish on wooden counter tops. The marine version is Epifanes varnish. Because Epifanes is an exterior varnish, it has UV blockers in it. Something that can be done with Waterlox is to add Epifanes accelerator to make it dry faster. You can do multiple coats in a day by adding the accelerator.

I beg to differ. When Tom fixed the Moser rocker chair arm he said rather than make a new arm he would repair but only because he could get a good repair, otherwise he would have made a whole new arm . . . I know Tom is a first class sympathetic restorer and If this was a rare C18th chair then I would agree but a mid century knife handle in my opinion would seem to be a good candidate for a replacement rather than a repair - that is why I asked the question.

Me too. I thought he has been saying gourmet all this time. I thought maybe he had a stutter from the way he said it. I was wondering if he was going to cook something someday. Finally, I discovered he has been saying Gora Maine. Wow! I am such a fail.

@@johnsonrestoration I watch and enjoy many of your videos, so thank you. I have learnt a great deal. I would not always do things as you do, but we are all different. You repair more than I would. I would be more tempted to replace something where the repair area is a large percentage of the original.

It's best to keep as much of the original as possible.
@davemunch999
@davemunch999 7 лет назад
Why ? Tom could have made one that looked exactly like the original. No one would have known. It's not as if it's an important piece of furniture which I would understand needs to be treated differently.
@Shcreamingreen
@Shcreamingreen 7 лет назад
Well, he would have known, and he takes pride in being a good craftsman. It's a piece of design, not some ordinary kitchen tools, someone paid serious money for Tom's effort and expected the best result possible. Maybe the knives are going to an auction.
@davemunch999
@davemunch999 7 лет назад
You have a fanciful imagination my friend - Tom said at the start he found them in a flea market so no one is paying him anything. Going to an auction - they'd fetch more restored with a whole handle not a patched one lol. I'd like to know what Tom's answer would be.
@Shcreamingreen

Well, I must have skipped that part, sorry. But believe me, true craftsman always saves as much of the authentic material as possible.

Knife handles made of wood should be 'stabilized' if the knife is meant to be used on a daily basis. Stabilized wood is very resistive to water.

Suggestion.---- On teak and other similar woods , score a cut line with a marking knife. This will prevent most chip out . Also turn the bevel toward the cut line, not the flat.
