Old sailor's knife or Marlin Spike Knife Restoration. I found this rusty sailor's pocket knife at an antique store. The knife was very rusty. I decided to restore it. I think the knife was made in the 1950s-1960s. I love special knives. I removed the rust and polished the blades. I made new blue micarta scales. I hope you enjoyed my restoration video.

Exactly my words. I’ve seen a lot of restoration videos, and even more blade smith videos, but this is the first one to actually make their own micarta. It’s such a simple process.

I had a similar knife that I bought new in the mid to late 1970's. It didn't have any plastic but was all steel. After I came ashore I continued to use it until it disappeared (a visitor I think). Wonderful to see the insides though, to see how it all fitted together. And when I think of all the coca cola we wasted soaking things to lift rust, when we could have used vinegar and bicarb! If only we had known. Thank you so much for showing such loving care for a 'simple' precision instrument. By the way, I can still splice a rope and a marlin spike is also useful to plant seedling in the garden.

Also had one from the early '70s. Like a lot of things, it's been lost to the annals of time. I still have my TL-29 and my MIL-K-818 - which is commonly known as the Camillus, but there were several manufacturers besides Camillus. I just looked where the TL-29 is located, and it's not there, so who knows?

Lovely work. I would guess that knife got chucked in a box because of the scale damage, with the owner thinking they would find a way to patch it up and never did.

I always wonder who used these knives previously, and whether they were lost or discarded. I think you are correct about this one, the scale damage would make it difficult to carry in a pocket.

Yeah he does do fabulous work however he would be able to get the rust off much quicker if he would heat the vinegar up at least about 85 to 90° it will get rushed off quicker and do a better job Hollywood need to do it some very light scrubbing with a scotch Brite pad then rinse it with distilled water dry it off covered and will anyone to worry about arresting back

I hope more people attempt a restoration. And you don't need a lot of tools, and the knowledge is right here available. I actually used a thick gauge of copper wire for the pins and it's going on three years in the kitchen no problem. Not recommended for a folding knife obviously but it just goes to show that you can make do with what you've got

Although you did a spectacular job of making your own scales, I feel you like you missed an opportunity for some artistic expression here to show us your own personal style.(which might, very well be, strictly original) Also it was a little off putting that you opened the blades by handling the cutting edge.

Nice work, brought it to life again. Only the marlin spike is too pointy, you don't want it to poke into the rope, you want it to slip between the strands to keep it's strenght. So, round it off to a parabolic shape until it doesn't hurt when poking into your hand any more.

Nice job. Not criticism, but rather just a couple observations........ @6:50 I don't think neutralizing the vinegar with baking soda really does anything for the process that just rinsing with clear water wouldn't do just as well. It just looks cool. The acid content of vinegar isn't going to hurt you. Now if you were using muriatic or sulfuric acid it might be a good idea. Also, I get it that you have to provide content for the video, but why bother hand scrubbing with a brush if you are going to just go to a wire wheel right afterwards? Why bother cutting the micarta piece square when you're going to trace cut out from the center of piece ? Nothing WRONG doing it your way , just seems like much wasted effort for the same results.

Restoration has to be a 10/10, because your new handle (fabric impregnated with polyester resin--brilliant!) IMHO is even better than original. I really wondered how you were going to not just restore it but replace it.
@grzegorzswist
@grzegorzswist 2 месяца назад
I really don't like the trend in restoration videos to make everything shiny. Everyone keeps on removing beautiful patina and fixing all imperfections. Here, it is not that bad, but I would stop with rust removal and sharpening. And if you are already making new covers, why not wood? The original were made from plastic but it's because it was the cheapest option. Anyway, It's an old knive that was restored. It should remain looking old but cared for. The shiny new look is running it.
@BlackSoap361
@BlackSoap361 27 дней назад
For the micarta, you can add glow-in-the-dark powder to the resin, so the scales glow. Very handy for a rigging knife. You can make it glow blue to match the daytime color. If you are going to me making it often, vacuum-bagging can get more consistent results than clamping or using a weight.
@zaphodbeeblerock
@zaphodbeeblerock 2 месяца назад
Honestly, for me you sanded too much. The patina was beautiful, and I think its a loss, that you removed so much it. Secondly: A file works only in one direction. Like you do, you wear it down fast, and waste energy. The result is beautiful, anyway 🙂 Best regards!

While plastic scales have been around since the 1930's or so In the early years it was seen as a poor substitute for other materials. In turn the emphasis was kept on making them look natural and hide the artificial nature. So you would get an off-white ivory, brown Bakelite pseudo-wood, or textured black . Bright colors for visibility would probably be more of a 70s or 80s design choice. At least - that is my understanding. I can't claim to be an expert, but that is my reasoning for thinking that this knife is a bit more on the modern side.
@andesmountain9178
@andesmountain9178 21 день назад
I’d give you a 6. The pins holding the knife together could be cleaner and more symmetrical. It looks like neither knife has an edge sharpened, especially seeing you open it by pushing your thumb against the edge as you opened it. That shouldn’t be the case. Lastly the new scales do look gorgeous but not only is there still a powdery look like it wasn’t fully polished and sanded, but the scales are a little too thick compared to the originals. It looks nice, but it doesn’t cut it functionally, in my opinion. It’s a okay job regardless, and nice to watch.

On a Scale of 1-10 this is an 11! I particularly like the home made Micarta, the fabric was a perfect color match, was it a polyester? or cotton fabric? Have you ever considered trying to use an old pair of Denim jeans for fabric for Handle material? Blue or black? That would be an interesting handle material and the use the Levis rivets for the rivets of the knife? that would be a cool effect!

10 out of 10 for restoration. 2 out of ten for opening the blades. 😅 at first i thought it was a British navy clasp knife but they have a black or grey checkered plastic hamdle, or bare metal and aside from the spike just 1 sheepsfoot blade. Would be intersted in knowing where this one was from.

Nice job.. looks like a new knife and in some way it is, I have a similar knife it's got the date 1942, well I've always took it to be a date, I've had it since I was 12 years old, I'm now 55, it has black scales, just one blade, the blade is more squared, it also has a can opener as well as the spike, it also has a flat headed screwdriver as part of the build of the knife as in its not folded into the knife, I've always took it to be a wwII navy knife, correct me if I'm wrong but I think the spike is used to get knots out rope.
@StealthMoustache

I would say a 9.8, but considering how difficult this is, it would be hard to replicate and fully restore this to a perfect condition, so you did really really well. That is a job well done, and i could not have made it any better, you would have had to reforge the blades to get it to perfection, and maybe change some details on the handle. Shrugs, I'm just very critical in general.
