I’m loving that natural wood grain SO much!! Can’t wait to see it all finished. We’re about to take down our drywall ceilings to expose the fir beams underneath. It’s going to be so much better than plain white. Love your progress so far and love your videos Arvin! You always put a smile on my face 🙂

Arvin . When I heard you say strip the ceiling I screamed. I live in an 1876 home in the Midwest. It took me a solid year to strip every door and every piece of hardware in the entire house. These projects take time. Slow down. It’s a process and you have to enjoy the process in slow bites. 40 years later I’m still painting, stripping, glazing windows and every other possible project. A bit of advise ….our houses are life long work. If bet if you didn’t have any money I know you would have the strength to get through it . Put your back into it. You got what it takes for what ever project you choose😘enjoy

Yes restore the ceilings! You have a pedigree vintage home and if you ever sell, you will get that money back. It will look amazing and you both will be so happy in your beautifully restored home. Looking forward to what you will do with the house. All the best!

I know nothing about architecture.I think your house was really beautiful when you bought it. But, every time I've seen it since, it's gotten more and more lovely, with each thing you've done, even the little bits, like the coffee station. I cannot wait to see the ceiling and beams stripped. I'm having so much fun watching your house journey!

Oh, Arvin, I feel for you, because I’ve been building our house for FIVE years, and know all too well those depths of despair to which home construction can drive us! I have so little left to do, inside, but, then, there is a third of an acre city lot to re-landscape. I fear that I shall finish when it is time to redecorate. We must just keep going forward toward the realization of our respective vision. I’ll see you there.

Hi Arvin, I just stripped my lounge room bead board ceiling (1850). I used a heat gun to melt the paint, which worked quite well, but stripping, sanding, oiling and staining was very hard on my back… totally worth it, the ceiling is stunning, and I avoided the stripping fumes❤

I think this is going to look fantastic once it is finished, and Andrew sounds like a saint! One thing I would caution is to be careful with expensive home projects. We did two such projects in our home: one was an added room, and the other was landscaping. The room added value and we enjoyed it; the landscaping looked great, but we wish we didn’t spend the money on it. This is how it goes with a house though. Love that you tried to tackle this yourselves, and your honesty about it not working out. Hang in there!

It really makes you wonder why people ever painted the natural wood in their homes white (or grey or whatever). I remember in the house I grew up in (a mid-century beauty), we had those gorgeous wooden beams & at one point during a huge kitchen remodel in the 80’s, I remember the contractors wanting to paint the ceilings & beams white & my mom said “absolutely no way!”. She stuck to her guns & still to this day, there are gorgeous ceilings & beams in the home. (I know this because a friend of mine ended up buying it in the early 2000’s when my father passed & my mom downsized). I am so excited for you & Andrew, Arvin. Two months seems like a lot of time, but if you do it right the first time, you’ll have no regrets. This house is a labor of love for you & it needs to done right. One thing I’ve learned from watching XO, MaCenna, is to pay attention to all of the little details while doing any project, even if it takes you longer. It will really make your house custom & perfect!! Sending you so much love & light!

ARVIN!!! When scraping the paint, hold a shop-vac hose there so it just sucks it all up; instead of creating a mess for later. ☺️👍 Just a little tidbit. ♥️ Theres another channel I watch, 1834 Restoration House, and they used a COBRA PAINT REMOVER HEAT THINGY to remove all of the latex paint from the trim of their 100+ year old Victorian home. I would suggest you look into it, before you end up ruining all of that beautiful wood! 🙏💞

if you're already using stripper, definitely use saran wrap to speed up/intensify the process. if you apply stripper, coat it in saran wrap while wet, wait overnight and then scrape you will have much less physical labour to do.

Arvin just cover the ceiling with planks of wood, its cheap and you can sand the beams. If you planks the ceiling you can get tongue and groove and pick your wood, they have them cedar too which is great for repelling moisture and bug plus it smells divine Best wishes

Ohhhh the ceilings are going to be so gorgeous! I had my wood beams and wood ceilings sandblasted last winter… and you will love it! Sandblasting does texture the wood a bit but it’s so worth it! Will you apply put a protective coat once complete? I had to put a clear coat on mine (it deepens the natural wood a tad) but I wanted to ensure I protected the raw wood esp if the road ever leaked. Can’t wait to see the final outcome ❤️

Arvin, I wish I could spend a whole day designing with you!!! As a Feng Shui practitioner, an artist, designer and faux finisher, my approach to this horrendous job would have been to use a base coat of paint that echoes the hue of natural wood you would prefer the most, and then follow that by a couple of layers of customized oil based gel stain to add an unfathomably organic and high-end look of completely natural and authentic woodgrain with that warm look and feel. I have asthma and allergies as well and it’s really difficult to do those things your house, much less indoors! I can relate to your passion about this project and I also understand why you waited so long to try to tackle it. Halfway through the video and can’t wait to see what happens at the end!

When you have a large home, you are never finished with the remodeling or just with the normal maintenance of the home. You’re just getting started. I contracted a company to replace the stucco just on the back of my home and it was over $60,000. Plus the contractor left the job and I had to hire someone else to finish the work. It took at least six months to complete the job. I thought I was going to lose my mind. Good luck.
