And this is what sets you apart from others, and why I like to follow your channel it’s your vulnerability, honesty and growth. I’m here learning from you and with you. Your designs only seem to be improving and I’m definitely checking out rugs USA for the first time in years for your collection.
Very brave of you to do this segment. I feel that you should be proud of how your style and expertise has grown over the years. I think your style in 2019/2020 was more catered to the masses and that was fine for that time period. You now shine with your curated uniqueness and I love watching your channel.
I love seeing the growth! For me, I would love to see more green on the shelves (2nd comparison). Green can be so warm and neutral and I think a few plants scattered throughout the shelves can add a little more texture, not feel overwhelming, still be neutral and warm, and fill in some of those empty spaces.
My bugbear is about how books are used. Books are meant to be read not just demoted to styling a shelf or used as risers for a vase or trinket. I love seeing a bookshelf filled with books. It gives me a sense of knowing someone's personality and interests. Our interior styles will always have the basic principles / influences however evolve through refinement and usually by a larger disposable income.
Excellent point! I have 2 books on my coffee table and although they do look cool, I have nothing on top of them or obstructing access to them and yes they are both books that reflect my personality and interests 😉
Absolutely! I admit to being a little snobbish about books. Worse than not having any books is having books obviously bought by the yard for their impressive bindings. The book “Class” by Paul Fussell hilariously categorizes interior design by social status/wealth. Sadly, I’m from a long line of proletarians, but I don’t have to advertise it by only having a TV Guide and a Chicken Soup for the Soul sitting in my living room!
You can decorate with books you have already read, and instead of having them in a drawer or something, putting them in display in your coffee table or shelf
I loved this, Arvin!! Obviously a little late, lol. BUT, I also still love my 82” olive tree from Nearly Natural. 🤣 I have had it for YEARS and am contemplating getting another because I just love the shade, lightness of it, and just how it makes me feel when I look at it, lol. I’ve tried other trees, but none give me that same feeling. 🤷🏻♀️🫣😂❤️😘😘😘
Arvin Dude, you are an absolute favorite! I Luv that you can look back and laugh at yourself and putting out public . . . you are so real and fun! Luuv it . . .
I agree about changing out the pendant lamp in your brothers room. AND please please add the Geode (sp)? add to your book case I have one and I love the juxtaposition of the hard stone and the wonderful sparkle with books, baskets etc. 😊😊. Keep the faith and try to enjoy the process. Someday you will laugh at the crazy aggravating times. Remember your building your forever home! There’s will always be something new.😊😊
love this video! I think after going through similar cringe moments over the years, what I've learned is to just furnish and decorate my home with things I love and have collected and have a story behind it. No more following trends...they become too ick too fast!
OMG Arvin, this is such a informational video, filled with valuable tips and tricks that helped elevate your style throughout the years! I literally stopped everything that I was doing and sat down in my office with only my laptop and you, so I would pay attention and learn from your improvements. Please more styling videos like this with different rooms in your beautiful new home, so we can learn different options! Thank you, Arvin!
I believe that you have truly evolved. Your style has become your own. @nicklewisdesigns talks about your rugcollaboration and he also noted that the designs are 'so you'! Bravo! Very well done.
I loved this. Showing your mistakes and past choices next to your current design is so educational and inspiring. Sometimes I fall into choice paralysis when decorating out of fear of making the wrong choice. This video almost felt therapeutic for me to watch you evolve, laugh at yourself and appreciate the good in what you have done over the years. Such a great growth mindset. New subscriber after casually watching your videos for the past year.
I can witness your evolution in not only your decor style but in how you portray yourself. Anyways, I loved your videos then and I love them now as well. I know that you’re going to get far in this business and I wish you the best. ❤
Thank you for sharing this. It's highly impactful to me at this time because I am about to style my shelf. You are a huge inspiration to me. Kindly, roast more of your design 🙏
Hey Arvin, that green top you’re wearing looks stunning on you. I’d like to see you incorporate some more saturated colors like that into your interior designs. Your evolution is fun to watch. 💕
I like the art in the new house. It works with your fireplace, which is hidden by your lovely shearling chair. Can you rethink the furniture arrangement? Maybe move the sofa? It's a tad small for the painting. The overall feeling of the room is grand, masculine or yang. I feel like it needs another sculptural art piece, maybe a voluminous or glossy one?
I love your brother room. I really like the white lamps. To me it brakes up all the neutral colors. Witch I love the most. I relax better in a neutral room. I love watching your styles. Thanks and may you have a Blessed day.
I agree, the shelf in 2019 was a bit much…too much clutter but what you’ve currently done in your office I love!!! The current living room is stunning! And, I do love the wall art over the sofa! I felt the color of it gave that extra umf!!! Your brothers bedroom is perfect other than the ceiling lamp! Nice that you shared your feelings about what you would’ve done differently. Your transparency is appreciated!! 🤗
Love the new office shelves. Feels just right. I wouldn't put anything else on. You said the other felt like it was too retail. Don't make the same mistake here!
Hey Arvin! I’ve been following you for a few years and it’s been amazing to see how your style has changed! I’ve learned so much from your videos where you talk about how you would’ve done things differently. I find that I don’t always know how I’ll feel about something until I’ve put it in my space and lived with it for a bit.
Let me tell u this, 90% of people would never ever reach the level of your old design style. new style is much more sophisticated and has inspired me a lot.
Arvin, I am so proud of where you have reached in your life. I remember following you when you only did Home Goods reviews. You still are on the top of my list to follow for decor. Best, Angela
I enjoy watching roasting your own designs as well as your subscribers. It’s entertaining and I learn a lot when you point out flaws and admit to having to redo something such as a pendant or adding pattern to a plane space.
It’s called growth added with knowledge and experience. You were a novice with interior design interests and you matured into a designer with expertise. Plus, you have a larger budget and sponsorships and turned your passion into a successful career. You have impeccable taste and talent Arvin
Wonderful video, Arvin! Thank you. You have matured, and so has your taste, yet, you have not veered away from your personal style. What we see in your new home is the refinement of your expression of self. What I particularly respect is that you reflect on and analyse your work, and thus learn from it. You have much to be proud of. Congratulations❤️
I loved this comparison video! I love your current bookshelf and decor as well-the textures, colors, and different shapes and sizes play so well together. I am learning so much for you as I decorate my own house :-). I wouldn’t add too much more though to the bookshelf so it doesn’t start to look cluttered-I actually don’t see any empty spaces now, but of course it is your house so it has to be perfect to you!
Isn't it wonderful how some of us learn from our inexperience? In all aspects of life, if you grow then it is never a failure. Keep creating your beautiful designs. You are incredible!
I just appreciate your creativity and your willingness to question yourself (critical thinking) and your own designs. I LOVE the evolution. My so has a fabulous new place in L. A. and I’m using some of your ideas/style to help him find and create his own style ( turning out to be mid century modern w/some personal photos mixed with simple, calming, art pieces). Thanks for all you do.
Your style has evolved as you have grown and learned your trade. The first home was lovely, but I see the new house as a timeless beauty. There is a famous scene in the movie “Sunset Boulevard” where Norma Desmond descends the stairs and says, “I’m ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille”. Your home is just about ready for her close-up and you have done an amazing job!
I guess to sum it up, you have really grown and evolved in your styling. I think your current shelving in your office is perfect, not overdone. Love your videos.
love a roast.. w the first room I thought it needed height and less clutter - where second (newer w reddish art) was calmer on my eyes with order and the black beam brought my eyes up - you utilized design for the whole room and it looks effortless. I'm so stuck with my bed/bedroom. I ordered a bed without a headboard (what was I thinking) and it's a California king and wall behind it is narrower than bed. windows on both sides so headboard would go over part of the window.
I agreed with everything 😮 I'm really amazed. You have the eye for it ❤ (or the nose) 😊. That shelving looked gorgeous until you mentioned the little bench. That was so spot on! Learning from yourself is the best! 👌
I love this video! Comparing your old design with the new one, you will see how your taste and knowledge of interior design matures over time. This is a genius idea!!!!
Love this video!!! Love how you have evolved and your honesty about home decor, especially when you’re first starting out. You’ve grown from typical home decor to more of showing your personality and creating more of a timeless look with design, but we can still see those similarities that screams Arvin Olano and that is something that is unique and special about you. It Carrie’s your signature.
That deep red/ burgundy art piece is such a winner! As you said its unexpected. Goes so well with everything in the room. The scale is perfect too. Putting something neutral there would look good too - but wouldnt it be so overdone - something you can find in every magazine. I loved the unexpectedness, yet the cohesiveness that art piece brought to the room
It’s staying in the house for sure! Might just need to some some pillows or decor with the same hue to tie it all together. We’re actually doing color in this house
Lots of evolution shown here. Wonderful !! What I like about the brothers room Arvin is the art above the bed. The scene adds a warmth and dimension to the space. A little action that suggests something not simply material. What do you think? I am not a fan of the downloaded/framed /random shapes print pieces I see so much of .. Also sometimes objects are chosen- just to choose an object. A memory or something from ones life brings true intimacy to a room. Yes? I love your channel and the effort you put into your video's. 💥
You have definitely grown Arvin😊 While there are elements of your old design that I love, I absolutely love where you are now❤❤ I have photos of my design style as far back as 15 years and I cringe now at some of the choices I made, especially knowing that I loved it at the time, but I will hang onto them because it is fun to look back and see how far I've come. I really enjoyed this video and would love to see more... it's great to see that interior designers are always growing too😊
I think we can all do this ..look back at old pictures of our house, our clothes, our hairstyles. Everyone 'evolves' to some degree. You just happen to be on YT so we see yours on vid. But I definitely remember you working at Gucci and the rug dance and how everyone was stalking that Sarah Brooke painting and crystals from HG. You definitely are a trendsetter and ppl myself included like your style (even if its different than mine). Your humor is always fun to watch. Yes roasting yourself was funny and ppl who send in their spaces is funny too. Its all in good fun. Just keep being true to you...your tribe will always find you...
You're my favorite! I love your work, and that you are able to make fun of yourself! I adore the wall You're sitting in front of, and the mod shelving unit in your office! Do tell where you got it please 😘
I LOVE this bc I use your comments as a cross reference to my home decor 😂. Now I know what to toss and keep (within reason of course) . Thank you so muchhhh for sharing these priceless gems 💓
I love to look back to my space from around the same time frame when I started to get into interior design (when I got my first place as well) to see how far I've come and to see what I've improved on. I'd be down to see another video this this.
Apart from the clock, I like the furniture in the first photo. Not what I would have chosen, but with some tweaking, you could still make it all work! Thank you for the video! I am sorry you are experiencing issues with the house. I need a new bathroom, but I cannot cope with what I will go through if I go ahead with it.
I see your growth from younger to now, a bit older but much more refined. The newer living room is similar in layout only better. The boucle anything I can live without, as they always look pre cat clawed to me. I agree that the red painting over the sofa seems a bit of a dissonance. Gorgeous rug, and I really like your color pallet! Your bedroom decor is 1000% better. It looks so serene, soothing & calm. I'd put a ceiling hugging chandelier in place of the paper lamp. 😚 I also despise the pillow chop.
Love the new home, that magenta big piece of art on top of the sofa is bold, unexpected, warm and makes everything look cozy, well lived in., sorry you are not in love with it because it's a piece that you don't see in any home...love the wooden shelf, the contrast against the light wall is perfect, love your videos, love the way you are going, don't be too hard on yourself because everything looks really nice, looking forward to see the nex video, always enjoy them so much...kisses to the pups.
This was such a fun video- I’ve only discovered your RU-vid channel about a year ago - it was really interesting to see how your style has evolved over time - your current style is more sophisticated- It would be fun to see more of these type of videos
