Restoring Our Victorian Episode 13: It's all in the details!

We are SO close to completing the insane goal we set for ourselves and take this space from gloom to glamour in 6 short weeks.Only six weeks ago this space looked like the lair of a serial killer, but now we are merely days away from turning her into the Victorian Spa Bathroom every preservationist dreams of.
As they say, the devil is in the details. It's also the details that make the final days of these projects go on for the length of a Bible. Watch Laine and Kevin completely rebuild a historic window to save it from the landfill, begin the daunting task of tile work, repair faux bois, and give tips and tricks on repairing and reusing woodwork.
Next week will be the grand reveal of this dream room. We hope to show you how to create a new room with all the convenience of the 21st century but the style and opulence of a space created over 100 years ago. It's our hope that if the original owners dropped by for a visit they'd love and understand what we are doing to their home.

I get to the end of your videos and I yell, "NO!!!!!!" I always want MORE. I have literally hundreds of small window panes on French door windows in my 100 year old Sears Home. So many people have told us to replace them. So far we have reset a bunch of them, but we still have 100 in a tiny sun room that need to be tackled. This video helped encourage me a lot. I wonder if we will live long enough to finish them all. I wonder if anyone will still appreciate those windows when we're gone. Sigh.

I have that saw. Love it. Helped cut the door jams and trim when we replaced the floor in our Victorian. When we saw the nails in the "quarter-round" no one nail looked alike. 125 year old nails.
@toniasalways

The square nails were blunt and rather than piercing the wood, it cuts the wood fibers. Piercing makes wood split. Blunt makes a hole.

It was worth the effort to restore those old windows. A builder in my neighborhood "restored" an old colonial, replacing all the old windows with vinyl-clad, standard-sized replicas. The sizes and proportions may not be terribly different but they just look wrong! They spoil the whole facade. As the title of this video states, it's all in the details!
@cynthiafisher9907

Yes! The windows are the eyes of the house! Our old house had vinyl windows when we bought it, the old ones were already gone, sadly. We did the best thing we could, we replaced them with Marvin windows.

I live in an ancient house (1774) and so does a friend of mine but hers is in the country……both are on the National Preservation Trust. She put storm windows on all her windows and was informed she had violated the regulations…….I guess it is NOT easier to get forgiveness than permission. Back to the drawing board……

Those blankety-blank Q-tips! Grrrrr! I once moved into a ground floor apartment in a four storey building. Shortly after moving in I had problems with the drainage in the bathroom. Plumber called. Plumber arrives. Plumber discovers multiple plastic stick cotton swabs lying over the waste pipe in various directions, creating the perfect block in the toilet. Plumber leaves, BUT! before plumber leaves, and yes, he had the big plumber’s crack lol, he managed to get brown filth all over the bathroom including the ceiling! Then to add insult to injury, the manager charged me for the call and I’d been there a week and didn’t use cotton swabs with plastic sticks! End of story. Sheesh 🙄

A lesson learned. If you RENT, you need to call the landlord so HE is the one that pays. Also, if there are any additional or new issues with the same system, YOU may wind up having to pay because of the "unauthorized" repairs caused by an unknown vendor. :(

Everything looks great…the bathroom is going to be amazing! Windows are a big job…I completely restored 22 wooden double hung windows in my vintage home…took every piece out, then glass out…then sanded down to bare wood and then repainted…reinstalled / glazed glass and then rehung with new sash rope and original window weights. It took forever but the look of the finished project was worth every minute. Love how you two do it right

It’s alway the high light of my day to see a new video of yours up n ready to watch. Your definitely the kind of people I wish there was more of. Wish there were more couples like you guys who appreciate history n 100 n plus year old houses to bring them back to there glory without modernizing them. There’s just so much beauty in older houses n the craftsman is unbelievable. Laine, I realize you’ve been doing this awhile but you amaze me how you fixed that window n mixing up stain to a perfect match. I wish I was a fly on the wall that I could sit there n watch n learn from you. Yes, you give a lot of great tips but ohhhh to be that fly n watch n learn all day long would make my heart fludder with joy. I’ve used that Rub n Buff a lot. Great stuff it is. Had to use it on a old antique floor lamp as it was brass but had a lot of rust that would not come off, sooo I grabbed my rub n buff n it turned out beautiful. I would love to learn more about shellac n what exactly is it. I know a lot of antiques have it on it but would love to know how to use it on a piece that’s been refinished. Can you make your own shellac or do you have to buy it? Bathroom is looking great n that apothecary looks so cool in there. Better go I’ve bored you enough. Waiting anxiously for next video. ♥️♥️😊👍👍great .

Hi. I found your channel a few days ago and have been watching a couple of videos everyday. I would be binge watching if it was still really cold out. I love how you do everything to maintain all the original materials and features. We just recently moved into a 1920 cottage. Unfortunately the floor plan has change a few times and all the original trim is gone, hardwood covered up....We have a teeny, tiny budget but will be trying to bring back some of the atmosphere and look of the era - when we get done playing in the blank slate 1 acre yard; creating veggie, herb, and flower beds - plus native pollinator habitat, etc. One thing I would like to know about in this particular video is what the paint color is in that bathroom.
