The new shed needs a lot of work. We're coming out of isolation. No one has any money. So, Uncle Al spunks £400 on a load of rusty tools. Plus, he doesn't even know what they're for... idiot or genius? You decide...
Al has a touch of buyer's regret as his tool-buying habit reaches new levels of ridiculousness/wise investment as he's purchased this lot of antique tools that were previously owned by a silversmith. Whilst they are in pretty good condition they are going to need some restoration, plus a bit of research to figure out what they're for! If any of you loyal members of the Shedulencia can give us a clue to what some of these items are, their purpose and how to use them we are all ears over here in the Dirty Shed.
Whilst he isn't totally au fait with all the bits and bobs there are some items that Al explains - including a 14" swage block, some stake anvils, a election of rounding domes and a spoon making mould. Uncle Al also demonstrates how he's going to restore these silversmithing tools by bringing one of the items back to shiny life. Plus, as always, there's an array of irreverent banter and theological discussions - "That would be an ecumenical matter!"

Al, I think that you are over thinking this lot of fantastic tools you acquired. Don't worry about what they were officially made to do because someday you will be making something and you will look at your assortment of tools and one of them will be the perfect shape for what you are doing at that moment. Oh, and at about 17:20 of the video you stroked the round bic of the stake anvil like you were having a personal connection with it, so it was well worth buying the lot. TP

Hey TP, we actually put a couple of tools to the test - so you're bang on fella, it's all gonna get used some day. Is that what all tool-oholics say?

Great content. Always fun to find hidden treasure. Here in the states people are paying $600-800 for an old, authentic steel sewage block. Selling just that should get your money back in spades. I think you got a good deal.

Thanks George, great to hear from you and so happy you liked the film, something a bit different so it's nice to hear it went down well. We'll have to see what happens with the haul, Al will probably move on the bits he can't find a use for and try and recoup the lion's share of his investment, but he'll buy any rusty tools he sees - it's a sickness!

I'M ALL CAUGHT UP!!! I can be one of the shedifarians, the shedyakuza, the sheddymcschreddersons (McDonalds tie in), the AL GOSHDANG WATSON fan club (and CameraBoy Mark lol *is Tammy still involved?). Point is, I totally enjoyed the last couple days of binging the channel. Love the style, love where it's going and glad to be a sub. We share a lot of similar interests (and a few skills) and I find myself wishing we lived closer. Congrats and thank you for your all your hard efforts. *that batch is a score around here. I'd love to come across a deal like that. And: stuff that looks like balls...about 1/3 of that new stash. ** Mark, maybe do a vid of your process, what cameras, what accessories, what editing software, what lessons have you learned along the way (like lens protectors ((sorry bro)) etc. I'd love to see it.

Most of what you have are called raising stakes, the loose pieces with the square bottoms. The don't go into the square holes in the swage block. There are purpose built plates that they plug into or clamped in a vise. Google Pexto company. Nice haul, is wish it was here in the U.S.

Nice find, I’m a Goldsmith/Silversmith and over the time of 55 years or so I would collect these stakes to do a specific job , the spoon stake come in many sizes to remove dents in spoons , the T stake holder would go onto a vice and a stake fitted to remove dents from cups the same with the swan neck stake , back in the day when I would buy a stake to do a specific job I could buy one for not a lot of money and only use it one or twice, in the trade the most used stakes are the round ball shape called dappers and the swan shape , sadly the Silversmithing art on large items has decided and tools like these are not used much, I use for my Goldsmithing work much smaller stakes that I make myself, hope this is useful,

Here's a link to making a Moscow Mule goblet out of a circle of copper. Copper, brass and nickel-silver are good materials to start with; remember that they work harden and you have to anneal your work from time to time (heat to 400°C then quench in water). After you've got the hang of the technique, you can have a go at pewter; you can buy it in sheets from British Tin & Pewter Mills in Sheffield: www.britishtinandpewtermills.com/
