We start tearing into the 57 Shasta. In this first part I sort of outline the basic plan for wood and panel replacement. I also talk about the floor a little and what I like and dislike about the new camera.

I've gotta say that the light gathering and contrast inside the trailer look sensational! Vast improvement!

It's nice people like you, that take the time, to show the rest of us, how to make our lives easier. Thanks a bunch!!!!

Excellent vid. It's like I'm watching a football game, talking to the screen: "Yeah, replace it! Replace the whole vent and panel so I can see how it's done!" Lol.

LOL Lee Ann. I think in the beginning my videos were more entertaining. I would like to bring that back some how.

"All us old people know that, the young people have to get that through their head" This young fella in Washington state is grateful to have someone pass on their mistakes! I'll be watching lots of these in the coming weeks. Thanks for the guidance.

The quality of the picture and the sound is much, MUCH better. Really good detail and very good color hues. Also, it does not shake as much. You seem a little frustrated, but there is a noticible improvement.

This is wonderful! I just bought a Shasta AirFlyte (1969), and I was water damaged walls. Not sure about floor or ceiling yet. I'll be following your videos closely.

Even though you have a 1969 trailer, the basic engineering is the same. It should be pretty much the same as my 66 Super Shasta as far as building is concerned. You might want to take a look at that series also. It's on my website. www.cannedhamtrailers.com

Larry- The start of another informative series! Looking forward to seeing things that perhaps didn't get covered in the Deville series. Although you don't like the camera...the quality and lighting and sound are great. Looking forward to seeing the ongoing saga of restoring the Shasta.

@mobiltec, Interesting point, and I hadn't thought of it. You're hardly in a "studio environment," and you do need a camera with a little substance to it. Good that you bought it where you can test it hands on and return it. Best Buy?

@mobiltec, Nice camera. The Carl Zeiss optics are a serious plus! It does 720p at a reasonable 6 MBPS, which shouldn't be too heavy on upload, BUT... upload time will depend on the service you have and your upload speed. When I was on standard DSL and experimenting with HD, if they were too big I'd just set them up and let them go overnight. If all else fails, you could probably re-render the vids at 3 or 4 MBPS for upload, sacrifice some HD quality, but still get wide screen.
@Anonymoose
@Anonymoose 13 лет назад
@mobiltec, Figured. Not many places will do that. They've always treated me well, and at odd times like this when I've tried something and didn't like it, they've never questioned or hesitated.

@ShallowBeThyGames Oh you missed out that day. There is insulation of two different types in there. The regular fiberglass 1/4 inch insulation and the plastic vapor barrier type also. This trailer will also have insulation and a heater installed.

That does seem easier to do one panel at a time. If I did it it would all be taken apart then sent to someone else to figure it out after I could not..hehe Your new camera looks great.Hell... film all of it in HD.
@mobiltec

@RedneckResponder Ya they do. Im going to photograph the new camera using the old one in the next video. I won't be making them this long anymore. I wanted to see how long it took during peak hours to upload. 2:45:00 for the upload. And this one was done all in VGA mode. 720 is the next step up and it will do full 1080 HD. But a one minute video would prolly take all night to upload LOL.

Aha! I suspected new camera. Saw an HD test appear earlier today but I didn't get to look, and you took it down. Problems? I disagree with the "VGA" bit. My philosophy: always shoot in the highest quality your camera supports. You can downgrade it in your editor for uploads, but you can't "upgrade" it when you're suddenly wishing your master was HD and it isn't.. Besides, you're stuck in the old 4:3 screen, when you should be in 16:9 widescreen. So... we know it's Sony. Which one?
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 13 лет назад
@anmoose Oh and the camera is a Sony Cyber Shot WX9.

Hello- I am going to be starting a restoration of 57 Shasta. It will need skin replacement. Do you have any suggestions on the best place to get the skin? I'm in Northern Calif. I am enjoying watching your series, it will be very helpful to me. Thanks.
@mobiltec

Go to my website and you'll see where to get metal. There really is only one place and it's down here in So Cal. Hemet Valley RV. Links are on my website. They ship. I have videos on how to install metal on the website.

@mobiltec 1/4" wow! I wish that was all that was needed in my campervan. Just invested in an Eberspacher diesel heater and been increasing the insulation this week. In my research of insulation, there is a type known in the UK as "Aluflex" insulation. It's less than an inch thick but has insulation equivalent of 6". Looks and sounds good, but it isn't cheap. That may be my final option if my "cheaper" method doesn't work.
@mobiltec

@anmoose I've decided that this camera is way too small and fragile. I'm taking it back and looking for something else.

First , I want to congratulate you on your fine restoration skills. My son and I are restoring a '71 Aristocrat 17' footer. Do you know of any exterior siding company in roughly the Sacramento area where we could find the correct style....or should I re-skin it in a generic style that's easier to obtain? Thank you
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 7 лет назад
Thank you. The only one on the west side of the country is Hemet Valley RV and Siding. They ship or you can drive down an pick it up. There are links on my website in the Canned Ham Links section. www.cannedhamtrailers.com

@mobiltec Ah, just had a quick Google of "insulite" - expanded polystyrene... That sort of thing is banned for use in domestic settings due to fire regulations. So anything similar is quite hard to come by. Expanded polyurethane boards are often used here (Kingspan). But it's rarely available in less than 1" thicknesses - Nightmare if the headlining level is to be kept to a minimum.
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 13 лет назад
@ShallowBeThyGames There are a few different types of insulation you can use. Insulite is another good one but expensive.
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 13 лет назад
@davidsquall351 This whole video was filmed in VGA instead of HD. It was way too long to film in HD. I will do an HD one next.
@ShallowBeThyGames

I didn't catch ALL of the Deville project and obviously saw no reference to insulation in what I did see. So I was wondering, do you bother with any form of thermal insulation? or is it just surplus to requirements in your climate?

@anmoose It's going to have to depend on how long the videos are. Im going to try to make shorter videos and then I can use the higher quality and wide screen format. Otherwise the file is just go dang big.

What is the best wood to frame these trailers?
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 8 лет назад
+randomdancingcatkittens Poplar. I like to use 1x3 where 3/4 inch walls are used. If the walls are over an inch thick then I rip my framing out of doug fir or white wood.

hey guys. i have a 63 shasta and planning to restore it all the way to the frame. has anyone estimated the cost of their restoration. would love to have a good idea. Wondering if my budget of $6000 will be enough.
@mobiltec
@mobiltec 9 лет назад
+Justin Victoria It depends on what you need to replace along the way. I would say that normally your budget will work. The two big expenses are new metal skin and paint. So if you don't have to replace much of the metal skin and be frugal with your paint you should be OK. Interior paneling will cost you about $26 per sheet. Paint can cost upwards of $800 per gallon including hardener. New 12vdc converter runs about $180 and a new battery is a little over $100. Tires and wheels can be all over the place in price.. Do your homework and you should be fine. My website is full of links and other videos listed in order for easy reference.

+mobiltec thank you for the reply. at the moment i am very overwhelmed if i should start this project. as of right now it is rotting away in my friends land and my plan is to try and restore it to sustain off-grid. it has mold all inside. the bathroom is a bit of nightmare to look at. i am thinking either starting up a campervan conversion or this shasta. cheers!

@NotSoOldHippy It's still low. If I was getting a living wage doing this the trailer would cost $15k to do...
