Restoring The Worlds Dirtiest Sega Genesis System 

I got one for free from someone's shed, and it was completely rusted. I had to salvage some parts, from random electronics laying around to make it work. The controller ports were not only rusted, but they were bent and missing prongs. The cartridge connector was not savable, since it was too rusted out. The adapter jack was busted off the motherboard, and the contacts were snapped off. Also the capacitors had leaked all over the motherboard. The RF shielding was also very rusted, and I had to sand it. The screws fell apart, so I had to buy some from Lowe's. There was also a lot of pet hair, and what appeared to be cigarette smoke dirt. This console was pretty trashed, but I managed to rig it up enough, to get it working again. It's far from being original, since I reused electronics from random old equipment. I soaked the motherboard in alcohol, and scrubbed it with a cheap toothbrush. Then sanded off some of the solder mask, to add jumpers to bypass some corroded spots. I'm lucky that I have experience with soldering, and some knowledge about electronics. :P

Good job on restorting that Sega Genesis Model 2. I had that same one at my grandmother's house last year, and I had almost 21 years ago. But I miss cables, pads & games.

RNGesus, that's dirty af. Luckily, i found a Megadrive in the garbage can of the local recycle center. But i miss cables, pads and games

Why not treat the plastic BEFORE reassembling it? Seems much easier and far less risky to the internals

Since you clean so many systems maybe you know the answer to this question. I know you said it took you a few tries to get the game to work and I'm having the same issue. I'm not sure if it's the console or cartridges. I'm having to blow each cartridge before inserting to get the game to work. Even then sometimes after playing a game a bit it will freeze or start pixelating like a nes game. I've cleaned all cartridge contacts with alcohol/qtips and took apart the system and cleaned the cartridge insert with a brush dipped in alcohol like you did. I have 2 sega consoles and both are doing the same thing. I've never had to blow a sega cartridge before to get it to work. I don't think it's the games at this point since I have to blow on each one just for it to show up. I also don't want to waste money on another console either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I found my mom’s Sega Genesis model 2 in my grandfather’s closet it works just you have to push down on the cord that goes into the tv and it’s hard to set it up in the right position can you tell me what I can do?
