Head to squarespace.com/oddtinkering to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code ODDTINKERING In this video I'll restore a trech art lighter shaped like a book from World War I. The lighter was handmade by someone during the war. It was not designed to have the wick and cotton replaced because it was soldered shut. I desoldered the triangle pieces of copper to remove the "hinge" and then I desoldered teh bottom of teh fuel tank to remove the cotton and old wick.
I cleaned most of the oxidation off with vinegar. Then the parts were sanded with multiple grits of sandpaper up to 2000 grits and polished with a buffing wheel. New wick and cotton were inserted and I made a new hinge to replace the old one. All the pieces were soldered back on using a heat gun. When using a heat gun it's important to make sure other solders on the part don't meltand all the parts don't fall off.

For those who might be wondering : Souvenir de Lorraine means memory from Lorraine. Lorraine is a region located in the North East of France, which means the lighter was probably made by a french dude, or as we call them : Poilu (it means hairy because they couldn't shave). There are many trench art lighters that were made, sadly most of them have been destroyed or lost, but some are family treasure. Especially in Alsace (a region that was part of the Nazi Germany) because that's were most of the war in France took place. (Forgive my poor English, as it is not my first language)
