This week we take a look at how we restumped our house.
We haven’t taken on restumping before so this is a learning curve for us as we go through step-by-step of how we took on this project.
This process will look different for everyone, this is just a quick look at how we approached it. We’d love to know if you have restumped before and what you found most helpful.

Awesome job. I literally have just settled and taken possession of a place and will have a crack at restumping. Mines solid brick walls... Just the floors have the stumps with the walls extending down to the ground.

Next time check out the reblocking stumps . They have a hook coming up one side which you can screw to the face of the bearer to hang off . Saves ya headaches . Nice job

Hey there Zac, fantastic idea! Unfortunately we learnt about these after the video 🤷‍♂️ but next time we are going to use threaded stumps so we can tighten them onto the bearer. Such a good idea!

How did you go about replacing the totes exterior bearer, I’ve got the same problem, also check out a hydro vac to save digging in future, thanks

Are you restumping the other half of the house in phase two? Is it harder to restump in two stages rather than all at once?

Hi Amanda! Yes we are doing the same in stage 2 and also 3! It's actually somewhat easier because you have a consistent height to work to. When doing multiple sections you might have carry out more plaster repairs then doing it all at once!

Hi what did you use to replace the rotted out bearer? What timber size

It all depends on the size of the bearers in your home, avoid using any pine timber for the subfloor, ideally the best timber for strength and pest prevention is LVL, if your bearers look about the same size as the ones in this video, the closest size timber you’ll find is 90x45

It's best to use a similar species and size to the rest of the home, makes it easier to level out when replacing. Otherwise always consult a timber span table for loads and spaces between stumps. Typically you'll find old hardwood bearers on the 90x60mm mark, or laminate 2x90x35 kdhw together to make 90x70's.
