We just had this done to our house in Christchurch. 80mm out of level. Exact same method. But they just filled the gaps with packers and new bearers. No new piles. They were concrete ones anyway. There were cracks galore on the inside. But all fixed now. Had to move out for 8 weeks.

Been watching you since early last year when I realized I had a genuine interest in carpentry. Your videos are all really articulate and informative and easy to understand. Ive learned a few things from you as a 1st year apprentice. I havent had a good time in my 10 months though, copped a lot of abuse and im not sure why. no one wants to teach me and it feels like i cant do anything right but im sticking at it and i want to finish my apprenticeship eventually. Your videos help me a lot, cheers from melbourne australia. 👍

G, day Scott from Sydney, Australia. * more headroom under this building. * the native timber hardwood shows it's durable quality after 100 years. * the cracking and creaking as the house (building) was being levelled: I only have concern for roof fasteners (steel nail) for uplifting wind forces, in high wind areas/saltwater locations. 🌏🇦🇺

I spent an hour today looking on google maps to find this house. Finally discovered it (by locating that large structure in the background at 1:21), switched to street view and... "Scott Brown here" standing next to the Cucumber Sandwich. However, this hunting expedition raised (yet another) question about NZ building practices: Why do so many houses have metal roofs? In North America, steel roofing is rarely used for residences.

So, I wasn’t going to reply on this but it seems I was misunderstood. So for the benefit of the jury, it was meant in humour. That’s humour spelled with a U because I’m English, not American. It was a play on the words lift kit, nothing more. I wasn’t ripping on anyone (whatever that means) and yes I’m also aware that Scott employed subcontractors, that’s probably because he’s a professional in carpentry not house lifting. And yes if it were me I also would have done the job myself because I have a work history in building and heavy hydraulic equipment so I’d have taken the risk and done it on my own with no insurance and no professional involvement. But I have a house made of bricks not wood that hasn’t got any subsidence so it doesn’t need lifting. I did once have a 66 Cadillac with a lift kit though.

Despite being durable in the ground and resistant to compression, totara being a conifer is a gymnosperm and as such is classed as a softwood species. Hardwoods are timbers from the flowering trees or angiosperms. There are very few native gymnosperms in NZ used for timber. Examples include: Beech, Tawa, Pohutakawa, Kowhai, Manuka/Kanuka, Pukatea, Puriri, Rata, Taraire, Titoki, Rewarewa, Mangaeao. Mostly locally grown timber hardwoods in NZ are exotics such as blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) native to Australia. For more see: www.nzwood.co.nz/.
@JohnColgan.
@JohnColgan. 3 года назад
Good burried lifespan for a softwood in the ground though! Local pine wouldn't have lasted much past 10 years. 116 years with approx 10% loss to rot is doing well! I visited NZ about 10 yes ago, place in North Island digs up half million year old trees from swamps, dries them out & makes furniture & souvenirs from the timbers. That is even better. Even cut a spiral staircase inside one trunk for their shop.

Lifting, Levelling and Re Stumping houses very common where I live in rural Queensland. One of my next jobs is exactly that on about an 80 year old house. We also lift them right up and build under. All done with bottle jacks and timber cradles. The Yanks have high tech linked hydraulic systems but never seen that here. Why don't your floor levelling guys do their own stumps it is all part of the same job. We lift level and stump as we go so many at a time. Leave over night and then do next batch. And no Snakes, biting spiders, scorpions under your houses. Bonus.
