Resurrecting dead power banks from Russia.

Mikhail, generously sent some Russian treats and a couple of dead power banks for our entertainment. One of them is quite unusual in its use of a microcontroller.
The Sbiten is an interesting thick sugar/honey syrup flavoured with powdered spices.
It's nice that many of the Russian flavours are similar to those of European countries.
When attempting to explore or repair lithium power banks, keep in mind that if charged they can suddenly let rip if you short something out. Keep a metal bin or tray on hand to throw it into if things go wrong.
If a cell has discharged too low it may recover fully if gently charged up to its base 3V level. I wouldn't recommend using them for a high current application though. A faulty lithium cell will tend to discharge itself when not in use, and at that point it should be recycled.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of RU-vid's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

Thank you for the video, it was a great watch! Nice to see nothing exploded during shipment. Glad to be a provider of nice tasty and engineering goodies for you and youtube! The caramel inside of the pryanik, i forgot to mention, is indeed baked condensed milk. For Cellevo the processor crash sounds more plausible, i tend to keep batteries charged. (Or, the rate on which the unit self-discharges must be really high for that particular power bank) Surprised how simple was the issue with Xiaomi, quite a fail considering the higher than usual price.

Thanks for the video, bigclive! A couple comments, although I may be late to the tea party... I am Russian, long time viewer, sometimes commenter. So the guy’s name is pronounced “Mee-ha-eel”, it’s the Russian variant of “Michael”. The chocolate brand is a quite popular one around here and is indeed rather low on cocoa oils and whatnot. In general most decent Russian chocolate brands take pride in the low amounts of cocoa solids in them. The cranberry candies are an excellent choice by Misha, I recognize that box of pure bliss! Now the pryanik is in fact from the capital of pryaniks, Tula (pronounced “Too-la”) and goes great with a nice hot cup of tea (a dash of thyme for the pot makes it even more gooder), and us Russians are pretty serious about our tea, I prefer mine with a bit of milk most of the time. This dolce leche you speak of is a staple of Russian tea-time and most likely is the flavor you’re tasting on the pryanik. Many varieties come with this type of filling. Indeed it can be easily made at home by putting a sealed can of sweetened condensed milk in boiling water for some time, just make sure to not over cook it. The clean up is no fun. At all... So there... A little excursion into Russian sweeties and culture. Love your content! Thanks again for all the work you put into keeping us entertained!!!

Hey Clive, the reason why some American chocolate tastes different or has a different texture is because it's not actually milk chocolate - it's called "compound chocolate" which is chocolate, but instead of cocoa butter, they use other vegetable fats (usually palm oil) for the "solid fat" aspect required to make chocolate.

My usual workaround for over-discharged cells is to just hook them up to a powersupply that's at about their nominal voltage for a few minutes and then put it back on the regular charger. Similarly overcharged batteries get to power a fan for a little bit until their voltage is back under control. Of course take all pie tin related precautions :)
@ayuchanayuko
@ayuchanayuko 5 лет назад
I do that too to discharged cells, but IMO ones that have been like that for long lose a lot of their capacity to the point of useless most of the time. Still good for USB fans though or if you have those box 1-cell usb powerbanks where you can easily change the cell.

I Shukhov tower is a design classic. Circular without a straight beam in in. quote "The Shukhov tower is a hyperboloid structure (hyperbolic steel gridshell) consisting of a series of hyperboloid sections stacked on one another to approximate an overall conical shape. The tower has a diagrid structure, and its steel shell experiences minimum wind load (a significant design factor for high-rising buildings). The tower sections are single-cavity hyperboloids of rotation made of straight beams, the ends of which rest against circular foundations. "

In a previous life I used to service electronic controllers for heavy dump truck automatic transmissions, nothing special about that except this was the early 1970's, everything was done with discrete components. It processed two analogue inputs, throttle position and vehicle speed, digital inputs from the shifter, starter, and a few others and produced digital outputs to control the shift valves on a huge auto transmission that weighted around 5 Tons by itself. Fully modulated current limited shift points with protections to stop drivers doing dopey things and trying to break the gearbox. God I hated those things.

This story reminded me of my trip from the US to the Philippines. On the main trans-pacific leg, our plane had power inverters in the seats, but the ones on my row didn't seem to work. The guy beside me needed a charge, so I let him boost up off of my *absolute unit* of a battery bank. Specs below the fold. 127,000 mAh @ 3.7v new, fitted with a 5v1A, 5v2A, and a variable DC 9v, 12v, 16v, 19v, 20v 3.5A out for laptops. Is old and holds ... somewhere around 65Wh last time I tested it, probably less by now, and the status LCD is utterly rekt.

It often comes down to the fact that a lot of the manufacturing lines were either bought in the west in 1920s-1930s or were brought from the axis countries as post-war reparations. The technological processes on a lot of lines thus might've remained the same as in 1920s-1940s, with less corner-cut innovations, that might've boosted the economy and the availability of produces, but might've had some negative side-effects on the quality. Even now some of this remains, note how Alyonka chocolate still uses foil, while this type of packaging is generally seen as outdated, the factory converted it into being a sort of trademark packaging. Stuff made for export was also generally of the highest quality.

Well, I'll bet on one of the cells discharging the rest. Reason? This integrated protection/mosfet ic should cutoff battery when voltage on it falls down below 2,5V, and chips like these are designed to draw very small current, somewhere about few uA. For a cell of this size a few years at least. I think if left for longer period of time, they would discharge to 0V.

My wife murdered her powerbank by not recharging it when the power was either really low or drained. I replaced it with the exact same Xiaomi as the first one. I must now ensure she treats it a tad more gently (to avoid the teeny tiny wire from breaking) and to keep the charge up so it doesn't die like her first victim. Maybe I will attempt to explore the dead one but the case appears to be glued together and I would likely destroy it when disassembling it which would null and void a usable repair. I purchased the Xiaomi one because it has a Mode C charge connector and the idea was to eliminate the micro USB cables from her travel case (her phone is also Mode C). The Xiaomi is also a lot lighter than the previous one which has, I believe, the 1822 (or was it the 1865) "laptop cells" in it.

No. :))) Sbiten should not be mixed with vodka. :))) In fact, sbiten (сбитень, sbe-e-tjien') is much older than vodka, and is THE true traditional russian drink, along with kvas (квас). Vodka has been produced in Russia starting from somewhere in XV sentury, and some say that it was actually imported from Poland. Anyway, sbiten and kvas were produced almost forever - for example, kvas is known to be well appreciated and mass-produced as early as in XII sentury. Speaking of traditional alcoholic drinks, these were called "mjod" - which literally means "honey", as it was the base for them. Unfortunately, by XVII sentury this traditional beverage was almost completely replaced by vodka, which was cheaper and easier to make.
@The_Keeper
@The_Keeper 5 лет назад
Mead is called Mjød in Danish and is made from honey. Makes sense I suppose. There is a story of a tribe of vikings settling near the Volga river, the tribe was called The Rus, and the story *claims* that this is where the name Russians came from. Now, I don't know just how much of that story is true, but the fact that Mjod is a word for a traditional honey alcohol in Russia seems to indicate that at least some of it is true. It could also explain why Russians tend to be batshit crazy, descending from some nasty mix of Vikings and native warrior tribes. 😁

No, this is a weird, concentrated, 12 healing herbs concentrated sbiten. Tbh, it looks more like бальзам, but without alcohol. What I mean, - the bottle literally says *How to use:* Shake, add 2 or 3 teaspons of sbiten on a glass of tea, milk or water. What you said is true, regular sbiten is like kvas, - you just drink it like sod. This one isn't like that, so he can mix it with whatever he like.

@@The_Keeper To be honest, Russia is extremely large country, and your experience will vary greatly depending on what part you are visiting. :) Even native russians often find some traditional stuff from remote (relative to them) regions weird, especially those who natively live in the european part of Russia. :) By the way, my friend from Denmark, who works as a translator from/to russian, once told me a story of how she was hired to translate a conversation with a "russian", who in fact turned out to be chechen. :) Oh yes, Chechnya is part of Russian Federation, and many of chechens do speak russian, but not all, and, unfortunately, the person in question was not one of those who do. :) The fun part was to convince her unsuspecting danish clients that indeed, a person can come from Russia and be unable to speak russian. :)

That radio tower is actually quite amazing, and iconic. I think I remember hearing they were going to pull it down? But there was a lot of opposition because of its historic and aesthetic value. Is it still standing? Not sure.
@Vokabre
@Vokabre 5 лет назад
There were plans for demolition five years ago, those were halted, but the tower in Moscow exists in a precarious state as it desperately needs a restoration, but no one wants to properly do it. I heard the saying was that to properly restore the tower you'd need to demolish it and built it again, but only Shukhov could do that. (One can never be so sure about demolitions, current Moscow administration loves to demolish stuff, and there's no real civil control over them, it's not like there's an election or anything).

Those are very odd-looking cranberries. Fresh cranberries have voids in the interior and white separators between them. When sliced it looks like a cross shape. perhaps they were dried first, but you said they were very moist. 1965? You young pup!
@restorer19
@restorer19 5 лет назад
My thoughts on the sugared cranberries, never having tried them and only just now looked up a recipe: since cranberries are hollow - they're filled with air, so they're harvesting by flooding the field and corralling them on the surface - there's enough space to fill with the sugar syrup you coat them in before rolling in powdered sugar and leaving the outside to dry. If the berries don't perforate, osmosis alone should leak sugary liquid into the cavity (though that leaves me the question of air pressure). But then it depends on who makes them and what exact recipe they use. Maybe that particular version/manufacturer aims for that result. I should get ahold of some of these and examine them closely. ;) (Or wait another month and start buying fresh cranberries on sale to make my own variations.)

I've looked at a lot of these types of devices. The chips on the back are likely current sense chips. A battery bank like this will have a chip for each function and they add up. A microcontroller for input logic and integration Monitoring, current sense and overload protection on the battery. Current sense and limiting on each USB-A port or USB-C port Boost converter for output sometimes controlled by the microcontroller but usually separate Fast charging handshake. Not really sure why these aren't built into the microcontroller but they are typically standalone.

Possible glued battery liberation technique tip. I know a pro trick to remove car brand badging attached with double-sided tape is to get behind them with a length of dental floss and use a sawing motion while pulling across or down releasing the badge without damaging the car paint. If you can somehow get a line of floss behind a glued battery on a product you really want to repair or inspect without damaging the battery, you should give it a try. You'd think they could have quite easily designed a bootstrap circuit that started the micro off external power and then carried on as normal. This quite effectively limits the shelf life of the device, if it's one of those things you only use in an emergency, it's perfectly feasible that it would fail when you need it most... But hey, there's a reason I'm not employed as an electronics engineer, I guess.
