From 1994-2020 the Brickyard 400 was one of NASCAR's crown jewels.
Now after 3 year's running the road course the industry and fans want to see the famous oval return to the schedule. Is it worthy of a return?

One thing that didn't help the Brickyard's image was when it replaced Daytona as the 4th of July race, which was considered an arguably *greater* staple of the NASCAR schedule. To many it was an obvious desperation move for ratings.

While the crowd reaction during Casey Mears qualifying run in 2004 was special, specifically with Turner Sports highlighting the significance with the voice of the late Tom Carnegie, both Darrell Waltrip's and Brett Bodine's qualifying runs in the first and second rounds leading up to the 2000 Brickyard 400, specifically DW's, will go down as one of the 10 Best Stock Car Racing Moments at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

As an Indiana Hoosier, I actually felt a little betrayed by NASCAR when the road course replaced the oval. The Indy oval is an extremely sacred tradition for my state, whether it be the Indy 500, or the Brickyard 400. These races are crown jewel events that not only brought good attention to their respective sports, but much needed tourism and revenue to our state as a whole. Not to mention, the racing, let alone the personalities of the drivers, are what keep us coming back, knowing that our favorite drivers are going to put on their best performances for us. On sacred ground that has weathered 2 world wars, and has hosted some of the greatest moments for IndyCar, NASCAR, F1, and Motocross… you don’t mess with tradition. You don’t replace the century old oval with a road course that has wrecked an entire nascar field due to poor rumble strips, and that has been the sight of a ridiculous F1 tire war badly handled by the FIA that caused a riot so bad that the state police had to intervene. Bring back the Brickyard 400, and so that the events that led to the decline of the Brickyard won’t happen again, simply have Goodyear or another tire company build tires that can handle the track surface.

The 2020 Brickyard 400 was an absolute classic. You had the top 2 guys for the season, Hamlin and Harvick, dual for the finish, but with a few laps to go, Hamlin hit the wall. While it did see an infamous late race caution, it was a good race nonetheless. Indianapolis is not an easy track despite its simple layout. Out of the 15 unique winners of the Brickyard 400, 10 of them went on to win at least one championship, and those 5 drivers that didn't win a championship beat the best on that day. I know Paul Menard had to fend off Jeff Gordon in 2011 to win that race. If Busch and Truex didn't take each other out, Kasey Kahne probably wouldn't have won in 2017. I don't get why NASCAR thought it would be a great idea to replace the oval with the road course. The freaking track attacked the drivers like it was Mario Kart when the freaking curb exploded or whatever. That right there should have been an omen to go back.
Год назад
Brickyard 400 was great, but the 200-mile race on road course is also good. But if Nascar decides to return to using oval, It would be nice to see IndyCars still having a race at road course on same weekend (like it has been since 2020). I hope they don't break up the Nascar/IndyCar double-header weekend.

Another event that needs to return to Indy in addition to the Brickyard 400 is the US GP for F1. Apart from the 2005 debacle with Michelin & the fallout because of that (which was an absolute PR nightmare for F1 in this country) it was a well attended & liked event on the schedule with many of the teams & manufacturers viewing it as an important event to impress consumers in the biggest automotive market in the world. While COTA, the Vegas Strip & Miami are super modern in terms of their ability to host F1, they have none of the tradition & history that Indy has & it is very important that F1 races there again, especially if they want to be considered a major series in this country.

@@L154N4LG4IBcars would require the opposite adjustments, drivers would need to make adjustments accordingly, teams would need to perform backwards pit stops, stuff like that. It's a novel idea that would affect the results of the race on those factors alone. It's probably not the best comparison but think about having to write with your non-dominant hand or drive correctly without issue on the wrong side of a two way street. I do think the biggest drawback is driver safety, would they really let these cars go 200 mph with the driver on the outer side of the turns? Probably not, I'm almost certain this suggestion would undermine some sort of safety engineering and when/if someone got hurt it would not be a good look for NASCAR.

After seeing the entry list for this weekend I genuinely hope the oval doesn't come back. We never get this many new faces in the sport at ovals and quite frankly this is good for the growth of the sport. When I saw Denny Hamlin absolutely cream the wall in 2020 while leading I knew that I had seen the death of that event. And hell, if AJ's win in 2021 never happened we might not be seeing some of these part timers come in and try their hand at the road courses

Before they totally scrap the current road course layout, I think they should try the road course in reverse. It would eliminate the sharp 90 degree turn at the end of the straight. It would flow much better and even make for drag races off the last corner to the line! It would also get rid of that pesky curb hop situation we always have on the chicane. Going back in stock car history, heat racing might be a good solution. We simply divide the 400 miles like this: Heat 1 (30 laps = 75 miles) Heat 2 (30 laps = 75 miles) Main race (100 laps = 250 miles) Instead of qualifying according to normal rules, just do 2 heat races on Saturday. The starting grid is simply based on championship points or metric system, heat 1 = odd ranks, heat 2 = even ranks. There are stage points for heat 1 and heat 2 and playoff points for the respective winners. The 15 best drivers from both races qualify for the main race, the others all receive 2 championship points as DNQ/DNS and don't start at Sunday. The main race is run completely without stages. A rule carried over from Allstar race: only green laps count, cautions do not count towards heat or main race distance.

I have a very radical opinion about Indianapolis and the Nascar calendar. I believe it is possible to do 2 races in the same year and calendar in the Cup Series at least, maybe putting the Brickyard 400 on a special and prestigious date, maybe putting this race a week before the Indy 500, and then, a playoff race in the road course, or even the opposite, but I think that Indianapolis can indeed bring good races regardless of the type of layout.

Here's my Soiution to solve the NASCAR at Indy Dilemma, and I say keep the Indy Road Course and the Indy Oval and add in IRP as well, but this is what I would do: Indy Speedweeks, 3 Weeks of Action at Indianapolis held from the Last Saturday of April until Mother's Day Saturday: • Last Saturday of April - IRP (300 Laps, 8 pm ET) • 1st Saturday of May - Indy Road Course (72 Laps, 11 am ET) (Run it Backwards and use the Old F1 Layout, for both IndyCar and NASCAR) • Mother's Day Saturday - Brickyard 400 (11 am ET)

Whatever happens, I’m grateful that NASCAR gets to race at Indy at all and I get to see it. They should do what they do for road courses, and make it so the stages don't make a caution, AND they should make it so that no charter spots are guaranteed. TBH, I think they should do that for all 4 crown jewel races. They should so away with stage cautions on all tracks over 2 miles, anyway, so that Michigan, Daytona, Pocono, and Indy always race like that, in addition to the road courses. I would say California, too, but they're turning that into a short track, so... Michigan and California are basically clones of one another, anyway.

Adding some unique rules to all the "crown jewels" not just Indy would be a great idea. No guaranteed start for charters no stages are both great ideas. Maybe 3 wide restarts? Not the initial start that would be just a copy of Indycar but on restarts why the heck not? Its better than inverting the field at least LOL. I went to the 400 in 97 and it really didnt do much for me but it was neat to see and be at IMS. I think the goings on at the road course have been all good exciting things if I am being honest. The curb coming up was spectacular if it had happened a second time in two races that would be awful but those once in a lifetime happenings shouldn't be hated now if a driver would have been hurt or worse yeah that would make the outlook different but the same can be said for any time someone attempts murder by intentionally wrecking another driver.

2008 was a black mark on the race’s record. I was there that day, but I continued going through 2017. The aero war of Gen 6 and what those cars required in terms of clean air is what killed the 400. The move to the road course in my eye was just NASCAR throwing something at the wall to see what stuck. With Gen 6 that was obviously a bad idea due to the same issues; Gen 6 and what it required to handle properly. But there’s another piece to this. The driving standards. The driving standards have become trash in NASCAR. And while I personally blame stage racing for it, that subject is open for debate. But it cannot be refuted how garbage driving standards have become in recent years. Be it lack of respect, incompetence, or outright malice. Maybe some fans get a kick out of the wreck fest that a lot of late Gen 6 and early Gen 7 races devolved into. But it hasn’t helped the racing what so ever. This year however? Indy put out a banger. There was strategy plays all through the field, excellent battles, and only a sprinkling of bad driving here and there. The race was allowed to progress and evolve naturally from beginning to end with no stoppages to drum up more excitement. It was how racing was during NASCAR’s golden era. All the road courses this far have been this way (Chicago is an outlier to this due to it being brand new to the series). I’m not against going back on the oval. When Gen 7 first ran I advocated for just one race on the oval to see how it would do. And given NASCAR and Goodyear are testing tires the next couple of days all but confirms they intend to rerun the oval. And it’s a good idea since Gen 7 has done exactly what it was supposed to do and make the racing better specifically for non short track and super speedway ovals.

How about we do a doubleheader, first on the oval, and then on the course, with the trucks on both weekends doing IRP.

If they took the grooves out of the track surface it wouldn't shred tires. Remember what it did to the Michelin tire in F1 and those cars weigh 1400 lbs.

why cant nascar take a richmond race out and replace it with 2 Indy dates, one being the RC and one being the Oval???? Richmond imo is way worse than a lot of tracks and a date needs to be removed from it.

I think it's the combination of the gen 7 car racing insanely good on intermediate tracks and the last 2 years being a shit show. It's clear the fans will show up again for it's return.

They need to bring back the 400. Indy should have two races, one oval and one road and everyone wins.
@runrafarunthebestintheworld
No one wins with two Indy dates though.

NASCAR this needs to stop this nonsense. Let's this jump to the end where it's a international road course league with a few ovals thrown in for nostalgia. Gonna be wild when they, banned a driver for liking a racist meme, find out the international world's view on race!

Why not have another double header? One weekend they do the road course and then next week they race on the speedway. And then Indycar can still do their race on a Saturday.
