Retail park in the fog | Panasonic G9 

I hope I didn't come across too negative on this one? I didn't really enjoy the experience of having the traffic quite so close around me and felt as though I didn't have much to say at the time about what was going on and how I felt. Maybe, I should have wrapped it up with a conclusion away from the location? Back to photographing trees next time ;-) Anyway, if you enjoyed the photos, please leave me a comment below. Considering you were uncomfortable you still came away with some good shots. Although I consider myself a landscape photographer I do enjoy 'urban safari's' and the relationship between shape and space; its easier to find juxtapositions.

Interesting concept of austere retail scapes. I think you told a story here and I see these scenes ever expanding, it is the familiar that we try to ignore. I love the way you kept the traffic sounds mixed with the suppression of nature with the blocked off trees and birds aloft, so fitting. And finishing with Colonel Sanders over your shoulder, perfect!

Hi Craig. Your first shot of the water treatment plant at 6.35 stood out for me.

I love shooting in the fog. It gives photos a rather ' ethereal ' look. I agree with you 100% regarding these retail parks ( it took u sometime to get into it ) . I hate them and unfortunately like weeds they keep on turning up on any patch but, they can offer an alternative urban photography opportunities. Do we really need them is another question though? This Corona outbreak has certainly made me question the value of a lot of our so called ' routine/normal ' activities and way of life. Loved the photos at 4:15, 6:05 and 6:36. The inclusion of the sound of the passing traffic in the background was also brilliant. It reminded me of the British TV series of the 70s like the Sweeny, something very gruff and filthy about it. Well done.

It would not be my choice for a holiday destination but you made some very interesting and beautiful photos there.

I know how you feel, every now and again I pop back to London, where I grew up and normally can't wait to get back home, infact the very next day I'll be wandering around the Kentish countryside cleaning out my lungs! Still, you got some nice abstract images there!

The first sewage works photo was really good, very much liked that. I also thought it was great that you were bringing out that long lens, I'm wanting to do more telephoto stuff, but would hugely appreciate more inspiration! Maybe if you took such a lens to the woods... But don't worry about being negative. I'm young and don't have a car, so I have to 'make do' with locations like this to shoot, and I can say that your photos are just appropriately depressing lol

Really enjoyed this. I'm with you. I prefer something a bit more bare than a busy environment.

I only like built up areas only to show the damage and the filth that is the result of human habitation and commercial activity. If I had time I would have gone round city of Manchester and try to photograph all the cardboard beds that the homeless use to make it to the morning no matter what the weather conditions. Thanks for sharing this video.

Some nice shots from an unpromising source. I was interested in your comment about exposure time - 1/15 - at ISO 200. I would have used a higher ISO to reduce exposure time and the risk of camera shake and wonder why you didn't?

Some nice images out of a nothing situation. Pretty grim environment - we are not great on our priorities as a species.

There were some nice images, especially some of the early b&w trees with the fog. It’s really hard photographing the things we see everyday and make them look different. Always good to try something different , at least it reminds you what you enjoy.

I was wondering if you develop your own 35mm film and if so would you be interested in making a video detailing your process? I see you have done some processing of your large format work on this channel but after a quick scan I couldn't see any for your 35mm... apologies if I've missed it

Nice to see you trying some urban scenes. Did you consider shooting after dark? Fog, tungsten light and retail parks usually make for atmospheric compositions.

Liked the abstract of the scaffolding poles. Others were not my cup of tea. However, I thought it was a great video of getting out to try something different.

Well done on getting through that ordeal, can't say I would enjoy the hustle bustle of city / town shooting either. An interesting selection of images and I think the ones that appealed to me most were the less identifiable shots, ie, the ones that didn't show so much of the town environment. I am not saying there is anything wrong with urban and in the right places can be very effective. Quite interested in how you find the G9. I have one on loan at the moment (possible swap with a mate) and after shooting canon for many years (and Fuji for a short while) I find the menus a little bit daunting. The canons are very intuitive to use but find the G9 not so. Another thing that is putting me off is the lightness of the shutter button. The sensitivity is such that I can't seem to manage the light touch it requires for half press focus so in a walk about scenario as you were in this shoot I would probably be rattling many oof images because of it. My shift to 4/3rds is an effort to move away from heavier gear, especially when out walking longer distances although big hikes are out for me atm anyway. Just got the one lens with it atm - 12-60 Leica f2.8-4.0 but would be great to put some other lenses on it to try out.

Im very much the same as you in that environment, would not be my choice to shoot - however I feel pushing yourself to shoot these situations does add to your depth and overall experience, which cant be a bad thing and can only make you a better photographer (IMHO), so I do from time to time 'get urban" Best image for me was the first one of the water settlement tank.

Despite the 7npleasant environment, the pictures were very nice. Maybe being uncomfortable is not always a bad thing. I recently changed from landscape to urban landscape and I'm loving the new pictures. @curtishansmiller on instagram...

I much prefer the nice smell of nature rather tgan the sight of asphalt with trafic, although sometime going out of your confort zone canbring you to another level

I like the pictures, but, like you, that type of photography never appealed to me. Cars and people, a tough combination. When i shoot in those situations, I do feel sort of nervous and uncomfortable. I've had other photographers say - "Just ask, most people don't mind being in a photo". Not sure I found that. In the field, I'm relaxed, competent, and at peace. Glad you tried it, nice pics, but I'm glad you're heading back to the woods. And I miss Barney!

You're right, these places are depressing unless you just fly in to buy something and leave again. The sewage works was somewhat interesting, maybe it's the engineer in me that likes to see machinery? The trees and gulls made nice shots. But retail outlets tend to be soulless places to a viewer. Back to the countryside with you!

You shopping for a Bentley Craig? A baby blue Lamborghini does not make a good picture. You're right there my friend, it's depressing out there....
