I wonder though. How many "rugged" FRS radios are merely "dollied up" and just as fragile if one conducted actual drop tests onto concrete from, say, 5 feet?

Question Uncle Bill ....... do you find the volume obnoxious when you first turn the radio on? Mine goes from 35 decibels when off, to a blaring start up of 85 decibels. Any chance for turning the radio on discretely is completely impossible.

I will look into this and find out if it’s programmable. Many of these are.

@@unclebillscamping I downloaded the Retevis Computer Progamming Software (CPS) and purchased the programming cable. (Took forever to get delivered). Once I had everything I needed, I eliminated all of the CTCSS Codes that were pre-programmed, and made other minimal changes, (as there are not a lot of options) to get the radios the way I wanted them. The obnoxious volume option was not one of them. Any thing you can come up with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Largo, FL.

@@The_SemperFiGuy Hi! I’m in Pinellas County next to you. Do you recommend this Radios? Was planning on buying 3 from Amazon.

@@mrfahrenheit3607 Hi MrFahrenheit360. The radio has very good reception. I'm able to monitor two repeaters in Tampa Bay. That being said, when you get the radio(s) you need to reprogram them to eliminate all CTCSS Codes from each channel and then put in the ones you want on the repeater channels or Simplex Channels. That requires that you download the computer programming software which is free and also purchase the programming cable, (which in my case took about 4 weeks to arrive). One thing that presumably can be fixed with a firmware update is the volume level when first turning the radio on. When I say its obnoxious, I mean its obnoxious. Also, once on, the volume can only be turned down so low. As for you purchasing the radios, since I don't know what you're intended use is, it's hard to say. Are they going to be for kids, yourself, camping, etc....... ???

@@The_SemperFiGuy oh okay, do you do that service? I’m planning on buying them for myself. Roadtrips, camping, etc.

I have several FRS radios, and all of the 2 watt models tend to have the same range. I use mine for kayak/canoe groups so we don’t have to yell. I assume that your Motorola T800 part 3 didn’t make it because the whole idea is simply impractical for FRS radios. Just because something is do-able doesn’t mean it’s going to be usable!

Part 3 never came due to theft but I agree that with the range of FRS It’s only going to be useful at the most extreme limits of the radio range anything less than that you will probably be within yelling or whistle range. I do think it’s a good idea to introduce new tech to FRS since using data packets are now allowed but I would much rather see this applied to a MURS system instead as there is much better range outside vs FRS and there is no special license required. I’m pretty sure MURS does not require a fixed antenna either so you could change things up to adapt to your environment.
