Retevis RT19 FRS Version ➜ amzn.to/2lnTJmf
In this product review, we will have a closer look at a set of license-free walkie talkies from Retevis.
The maximum range can vary depending on your environment, best distances are generally reached under optimal conditions (e.g. open line of sight).
More realistic is to assume a shorter range, because houses, trees, and other obstacles can reduce the signal quality significantly.
If you are located in the US, you can benefit from a slightly higher output power of up to 2 watts.
However, in Europe PMR446 radios are not allowed to have a replaceable antenna, and can only transmit at a lower output power of 0.5 watts.
Because of this, it is perfectly normal that these radios perform best in close range communication.
At first, a short range may seem like a disadvantage, but if you think about it, it also has advantages.
In a city with many users, simultaneous transmissions on the same channel, are less likely if the radios only have a short range.
The benefit, users are not constantly bothering each other on one of the 8-16 available PMR frequencies.
In addition, the low output power extends battery life, and you can use the radios longer while consuming less power.
Also, if your radio would transmit over longer distances, more people could listen in, which is also avoided by the weak transmission power. Because a potential eavesdropper would always have to be close enough to receive the signal.
In my test, the communication quality was not as good as other radios, personally, I think the Retevis RT619 and RT19 are very compact short range two way radios.

In the US there are no regulations for anyone unless you interfere ON PROPOSE with a transmission in a official office of the government. If you do not they can't legally act against you. The can't be like ["hey!! you cannot call the sheriff office without an appointment, YOU'RE UNDER ARREST FOR INTERFERING!!!"...] that's literally dumb, either by walkie or cellphone is a fictitious case. Know the law , WHICH I PERFECTLY DO then talk the law. Regulations can only apply in commercial agreements. If you're the owner of the product nobody can do anything against you unless as I say, you interfere and they can prove you have interfere, NOT THE device but you interfere with their transmission.

Spying could be treated as many things including treason if you're selling the info to the enemy of the nation. Other than that they cannot do anything LEGAL against you

I love the small size of this and the Baofeng t1. Question for you. If I wanted to stay in this small class of two way radios for a cruise vacation coming up. Which is the best in your kind, which is the most powerful “small” radio. Thank you

Not sure how well these types of radios work on a cruise ship, may be difficult because of all the metal absorbing the signal.

Thanks for this great review. Because it's small this device with a headset looks as a good companion for a bikeride but I don't know if it has a noise filter to filter out windnoise. Would a Motorola t82 extreme be better for this application? Distance/ reach is not an issue 200 meters would be enough for me.

Not sure, but wind noise could become an issue.

Very good range test. Gave a like. Can you please tell me if you were in visual line of sight during the range test, what was the topography, city or rural area, and did you drive away taking many turns thru streets etc ?. Can you do a test on multi-floor penetration range. Say you get into a building and each unit is 3 to 4 floors apart ?

I did test the radio in the suburbs, only a few obstructions, but some buildings and trees. No, I don't drive with a car, I walk for about 30 minutes until my camera shuts off. The PMR radios have 0,5 watts output power, if you are in the US FRS can go up to 2 watts. The range in buildings can vary because of materials used and or the design of the property.

If you bought the Retevis RT19 it should be programmed correctly for FRS, keep in mind that this radio is very compact and has a tiny antenna, from my testing the Retevis RT17 had a superior performance.
