I was having trouble painting eyes. After you said about the eye being round i painted a sphere then "layered" it with eyelids . How you explain things really suits how i learn. Thank you.

My mind is dancing, and in awe! 😮 Self-taught, started at 30, now in my 70s - I knew I lacked the ability to visualize or look at subjects in 3d in my mind. I didn’t know how it might be changed, until now - your video! Thank you. 🎉

OMG, that's so much me! I also think very abstractly and cannot "see" anything in my mind.... I am so happy to see so well accomplished artist with the same issue.... Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul for being so open about this...

Oh my goodness. I have aphantasia also. I am an artist and struggled as an animator when I had to imagine objects turning in "my minds eye". I see only black even though I can draw anything in front of me. What a great video...full of aha moments. Thank you :)

So glad you enjoyed it! Aphantasia is such a trip. It still blows my mind to think that people can clearly picture stuff in their minds haha

7:20 I also feel that I have strong aphantasia, and only realized it within the last year or so after seeing that 1-5 apple chart. My friends say they can picture the perfectly detailed apple in their mind, but the best I can imagine is a fuzzy outline, like a sort of apple-concept-shaped hole, ready to recognize an apple when it sees one, but not itself an image of an apple. Likewise for any scene someone might describe, or even the face of someone I know very well - I just can’t see it unless I draw it!
@Miriamhoffmann
@Miriamhoffmann 6 месяцев назад
Isn’t is so crazy? My one friend told me that not only can they ‘see’ objects clearly in their mind, but they can manipulate the objects and turn them and zoom in on them however they want. And that it is clear as day. And that when they read books they see a visual in their mind like it’s literally a movie playing. That blows my mind. Haha.
@EricPierce-wapcaplet
@EricPierce-wapcaplet 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, I am amazed some people have that ability, and I wonder if they can teach us, lol. Curiously, my sense of 3d conceptualization and manipulation feels a lot more real than my sense of seeing in my imagination - maybe because I’ve worked in 3d graphics a lot, and assembled model kits as a kid? Like, I can think about my house, and imagine I’m holding and rotating a model of it, or lifting off the roof and looking inside, but it feels a lot more tactile than visual. I just took an aphantasia quiz and ranked as hypophantasic, since I can sort of fuzzily picture people and places. When it comes to hearing, it’s totally different - I can imagine voices or music almost like really hearing them, and play songs in my head at will, which can be great, but it also means it’s super easy to plant a terrible song in my head.

You are great at communicating complex ideas! So much here, it was difficult to absorb it all I mean that in the best way, as I'm about to watch it again). Was glad to hear you also cannot "picture items in your mind's eye!" I cannot either - and if I sometimes get a brief glimpse of an image (When my eyes are closed, I mean) I certainly am not the one controlling what I see. And what I find interesting also is that I can't even see things I know well. I can't picture my own car or my own dog or my childhood home in my mind's eye - I know what they look like but when I think of them, I'm just thinking of the word, I guess (the name I've given these objects) not seeing the objects themselves. Oddly I can draw pretty well, most people think. I just can't see anything unless my eyes are open...

Woah. This video really gave a name to a lot of my struggles with vizualisation and imagining perspective. I knew I had light version of afantasia already, but didn't connect it with my struggle to rotate objects in my mind. Very helpful advice! How I tried to cope with it as a digital artist: I started learning 3d modeling. It helped me so much, bc now I don't have to rotate an object in my mind, I can literally build and rotate it in a program. It provided me with such great understanding of form that I would've never gotten with tutorials that focus solely on the output.

I came across your video and as I'm in the middle of watching it, I think I realized that for me, I can visualize but I feel like I can't fully focus on it. Does this seem relatable? Or could this be an entirely different issue because I don't think I can find anything on this kind of feeling. I can vividly visualize but I can't keep that up and my brain starts to go nuts with a lot of random stuff. At times it can be a slideshow, or just nothing at all. I was just wondering if you or anyone could relate. Either way, I'm gonna keep this video in mind I think this is very useful for me. :)

A little tangential, but I'm curious about what it means to have aphantasia. When Miriam mentions Kim Jung Gi for example, (or any other artistic concept, I suppose) how does she know how to describe his work without remembering what it looks like? Do you remember the description you gave it when you saw it? Forgive me if this is a common question
@Miriamhoffmann
@Miriamhoffmann 6 месяцев назад
Hi! Yes - kind of- I remember the ‘concept’ of it. That’s the best way I can describe it. Like I remember the details of it as if I were describing the attributes of it but I don’t actually see any pictures of it in my mind. It’s kind of a weird topic. I remember not truly believing that people could ‘see’ stuff in their mind when I first found out haha.
@chongillespie
@chongillespie 6 месяцев назад
@@Miriamhoffmann it is very weird! I also find it hard to get my head around the idea you can know what, perhaps something as simple as a line is, without remembering having seen it. Especially things which I can only conceptualise visually, like colour, as opposed to something more complex and tangible where you could associate its feel or sounds. 😵

Hello, I am also an artist with aphantasia and i was wondering how you approach adding non reference stylistic elements that are often present in your works. I often think of such things conceptionally and than try to render them logically based on my understanding how sight works. A bit like the concept of shaping a 3D form. How do you get inspiration for non reference parts of you portrait if you cant imagine them visually. Greetings from Vienna
