Simplifying Skin Tones : Oil Portraiture Made Easy 

HI Miriam! I've been teaching myself to paint the last 2 years and have logged well over 20 hours a week watching oil painting tutorials/ drawing. You have hands down the best portrait videos I've seen. Your information is priceless. I'm about to put all of the information I've learned into a portrait this week. Normally, I'm excited yet super fearful of messing it up. That fear is completely gone, and I just want to paint 24/7. This is the first time in my practice I've ever felt that way. I hope your channel gets the exposure it deserves. I will def share your channel with my art community.

Your paintings are so beautiful, I love your brushwork and the colors you lay inn!! Also it's a tight design!! COngratulations!! I see that you enjoy making your videos, which makes even special for us appreciate them! If I could give a tip about lighting... (the one you use for your video). It´s about the fill light. The one that you are using it´s kind half of the ratio in comparison to the key (the strongest and upper one). The ratios could be wider. Meaning that the fill could be three to four times weaker. And about lighting, the amount is a crazy thing. If you want to make a ratio 1:3 it´s kind having one bulb versus 4 bulbs... LoL! Anyway, if you use a white polystyrene foam board, would be enough to bounce light back and fill the shadows on your face. Just place it right under the frame and you are good to go! Cheers from Brazil!! If you decrease the fill, your face would look more like a painterly shadows, will create more depth... But not that crazy Caravaggio BLACK shadows! LoL!

I’ve very luckily always been comfortable with color mixing-my problem is choosing the right color to mix 😅 I’m horrible at that. I always want to go crazy with colors but I am not skilled enough yet so my paintings look insane. This video is so good-thank you so much! You’re style is gorgeous but these breakdowns are much simpler and more realistic and I think part of my problem is that I’ve been watching highly stylized artists painting fully in their style-I need to get these fundamentals you’re showing first before I can start adding in pure purples, reds, and blues

I’m struggling sooo much - I might just revert to acrylic which seems much kinder. I’m trying to paint a portrait of my mom and I initially made the shadows quite brown so with a lot of hue and then it just looked like a blackface fiasco. So then I tried to cool everything down and now there’s a zombie vibe - very muddy. She still looks much darker than her skin tone in-spite of the colour matching compare - her portrait shadows are probably lighter than her actual skin tone. I’ve let it dry a bit and wanna try increase contrast so will try to focus on brighter highlights today
