Eddy one of my best friends waited and waited now he's over 70 and in ill health and couldn't risk it now. His time thinking about retiring is over him. My target is before I'm 50 and still very much achievable for me. Do it eddy don't make the mistake that my mate did and Live to regret. Wishing you all the best eddy. It would be fantastic seeing you retire in Thailand mate. 🎉😊😊😊

Glad to hear you're going to make the move to retire. Ive been retired in Thailand for 10 years. The first few years I used to drink far too many beers to cool down and saw it as normal. I got gout and some indicators I was on rocky road. But now I rent a nice apartment and its totally under control. I drink a few glasses of cold wine a few times a week with dinner. Ive cut out beers which causes gout and fill my days with interesting things that dont need me perching on a bar stool with beers. Enjoy your great healthy retirement in Thailand! Lastly I find renting a monthly apartment makes you feel more at home and keeps you out of too many bars.

I’am over 3 years ahead of you Eddie, living the good life here in Thailand. Won’t repeat myself, but your on the right track about avoiding alcohol, I still have a beer every now and then, when I’am in the mood. I have a friend here in Jomtien from Texas, he’s 79 been living here for over 20 years, he still travels, just come back from Ao Nang, he went on his big 1200cc motorbike. We have a weekly 3K run along Dongtan Beach early in the morning, can’t be beat. Good luck Eddie, choose who you meet, certainly not the party crowd. Enjoy your next phase in life, take it slow try not to overthink it, keep yourself active and spontaneous 😊. Oh and it hasn’t really rained here in the Pattaya area for the last few weeks!

Hey Eddie. Great to hear from you. I am also planning to retire in Malaysia in another 6 years time although I did think about retiring in either Thailand or Indonesia - in fact I have come back from Malaysia after my 6th visit there and did my 3rd Indonesia visit just before that. I have never drank any alcohol in my life so I am totally teetotal. Honestly Eddie, it is better to keep away from booze altogether and have a healthy lifestyle but also limit the greasy takeaways as well, keep yourself fit, play some sports - this is what I do and kept myself in good shape. And do the country walks like you are doing right now in the video - I go for country walks as well around where I live in the East Midlands. I have been to Med countries myself so many times and I did think about retiring in either Spain, Portugal or Greece. And even in some of the Arab speaking countries like UAE or Qatar but it is South East Asia that appeals me the most. And the weather in England is pretty horrible especially in the winter with short daylight hours - it is depressing. We had pretty crap summer this year. The NHS is a shambles and let's not start about our dodgy government so I totally get you.

Malaysia is way too unstable towards the expat MMH2 program, just another scam they change willy nilly, it was friendly back in the mid-2000's, plus the costs are going through the roof in KL (Singapore prices), I could not wait to escape Johor Bahru in the end. Indonesia is the cheapest bet, but not Bali its a shite hole.......many other places all over coasts of Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan etc...or even Batam/Bintan where I stay......45 mins from Malaysia & Singapore, plenty of research before you make the move - good luck!

Not seen you for a while mate. I grew up in Asia (Hong Kong) but as my dad worked for the airline we spent a lot of time in Thailand and Philippines I was a young monger at 14. My dad retired to Philippines. After Asia I spent a lot of time in the west, UK, US, Australia and NZ but I guess I just didn't settle and got fed up with all the bureaucracy and lack of freedom not to mention the cost. Asia also comes with its challenges and living here is very different to holidaying here as you well know. There is no perfect place on this planet you have to decide what things are important for you and go find 'em. The subject of alcohol is very close to my heart (and liver), I had the onset of cirrhosis and basically cut right back, I have the will power to do that, some of my friends who are no longer with us, didn't. The main problem lies in the fact that people get bored and it's easy to say f**k it I'll got and see some mates down the boozer. I can tell you from experience managing your time in retirement in Asia is as important as managing your finances! You need hobbies and things to do, booze and crumpet only take you so far. You'll need a long term plan for how you manage your time as well as finances. Finances - I've seen so many people fail to adequately prepare, they forget about inflation, they get caught up in dodgy Asian investments and they forget the exchange rate changes! At one time in Philippines the UKP was over 100, now it's around 70, that's a big hair cut and you must think about emergencies and like you said you don't know how long you're going to live. I know people who have gotten ill, can't afford to go to the good hospitals and have died as such, others didn't have the money for an airline ticket to make it home. There again my old man is 80, smokes 2 packs of fags a day and drink a bottle of booze for years and he's still above ground. It's a minefield, but regardless mate, I wish you the very best, Asia is brilliant if you sort your shit out.

Working in SEA, 22 years in Indonesia, was not comparable to Germany and enjoyed it very much. 2016 we left Indonesia and I retired in the Philippines. Well said Eddie, my parents were stationed in India during the British Raj ( as in The Jewel in the Crown ) period and I was born there. I was fortunate to have had a privileged upbringing with servants and a different lifestyle, in this respect I am bonded with India, I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world. India: As far as I can judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on its rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked...Stop every now and then..Just stop and enjoy..Take a deep breath..Relax and take in the abundance of life. You are watching a spectacular spectacular in 3D and full stereophonic sound. It is such a diverse country with the highest mountains in the world: deserts: jungles: beaches: varied cultures and languages and most important of all its "cheap n cheerful" It has, of course, ease of access to Nepal (even cheaper than India) Sri Lanka: Burma: Bhutan: short flights to Cambodia: Thailand and Bali, In the 60s I backpacked across Europe and have crossed America but I am drawn back to India and the amazing adventures I have had to revisit these last 40 years. At age 65, I bought a motorbike and did a solo trip up the Himalayas to Sikkim and then onto Nepal a journey of 3 months blowing with the wind. Three years ago at the age of 8o, I was white water rafting in the Himalayas and then my life was put on hold with the onset of Covid. Now more than ever I realize that I will never be content with a sedentary life and that I will always be haunted by thoughts of a sun-drenched elsewhere, “The Wanderlust has got me... by the belly-aching fire” Your travel life is a dream's essence. It is peopled with characters you have never seen before and probably never see again, you are like the Vikings or Master Mariners of the Elizabethan age, who have gone into a world of adventure, and home is not home until you return…Once you have travelled the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers..the mind can never break off from the journey. You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. Turn up your fantasy dials and let your imagination run riot. I still have a full deck; I just shuffle slower now. I'm really a Recycled Teenager. It's Never Too Late To Have A Happy Childhood.

I’ve lived overseas for many years and one question I would pose is when you do require medical treatment in old age. Who will be around to help you regardless of the amount of insurance you have? I bet the percentage of old age returnees is really high. I would keep travelling there, doing your stuff and when you can’t stay home where you know the score. Another point I would make is do not sell up because you do not need to. Keep your money in your home country and rent a home so you can up sticks and move on/return as needed. You’ll be a much poorer person if you sell up and take your money with you.

Although no word of "Inflation" is mentioned especially if talking about 25yrs, it's the main concern for all @ the moment particularly Thailand. I spent 80/90's in Thailand but due to the lack of wealth creation moved on to Australia, a very rich country so easy to set up for retirement so much so it's cheaper to live as senior citizen than Thailand. I always need a base so a house is a must if your going to spend 20+yrs for health & safety& cost.

@@patricktraichal9287 sure that's easy. Here are just a few off the top of my head from all my travels: Many places in Indonesia you aren't allowed to walk without your shirt on in public. That includes many beaches although it's true in Bali many locals turn a blind eye to it its not advisable. In Thailand it's also illegal to not have your shirt on in public. In Thailand you can't insult the Buddha or end up in jail. In Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia any sort of person caught smuggling drugs is instant death penalty. In Singapore people get caned for the most petty western crimes. In Vietnam and Laos they are communist countries and have lots of restrictions on what you can or can't do. I remember just me walking along the Mekong River in Laos in Vientiane city getting grilled by police asking to see my passport because they thought it was odd for a white guy walking there at 1am. There are 3 things I think you need to give serious thought. 1) assume a time range you expect to live. 2) Create a budget of future expenses and revenues (if possible, prepare prior year's spending habits to give you an idea of spending patterns), and do this on a spreadsheet preferable comparing actual to budget.. 3) Assume you will eventually go back, this happens often. Its boredom not alcohol that will be your enemy in retirement IMO. Dont obsess too much about having to be teetotal. If you drink in moderation a couple of nights a week that will not severely affect your health. Keep yourself busy with hobbies and interests away from the bars and you will do just fine. All the best with your plans for next year.

Hi Eddie, I am in my mid 70's now, and retired to Spain when I was 55 years of age. Although I have returned to England now, I don't regret one minute I was living abroad. In fact I would return tomorrow if I could, but currently personal and health reasons are stopping me. This country is not what it once was, and it seems to be getting worse. In fact, I emigrated in 2002 because I was sick with this country and how things were going. So I say go for it my friend, and at least you have already sampled life in South East Asia and know what to expect. Good luck Eddie.

Sounds about right to me Eddie. You've got your head on straight. You have your health prioritized. You're starting to investigate the insurance. And you have a year to plan and execute the whole enchillada. Once again, keep up the good work on the sobriety. Glad you are feeling better. It's great feeling isn't it? Everyone's different, but I personally know that I can have a great time anywhere sipping on an iced tea or a coke as opposed to a beer. And I'm speaking with 38 years experience being sober. Just remember that you made the decision not to drink as a your own personal health decision. Nobody has a right question that decision, so you go right on ahead and plop yourself down on any chair in any country you choose (including Witherspoons) and watch the world go by in peace and tranquility my friend. You earned it. Enjoy every moment!

I don't drink like I used to when I was young. 4 or 5 beers in the evening watching RU-vid satisfied me. 68 now but can't pull the trigger on moving abroad. Too much family here now. I am 58 age is just a number , personally i would say work as long as you can . Its amazing how many people die soon after retirement. I am a joiner and will work as long as i can i travel to asia every 3 months and stay 1 month . Work keeps you fit and healthy body and mind . I can make more money in the uk even after i retire doing little jobs than i ever will in asia . Plus can spend the money on holidays to asia . I never drink alcohol in the uk but drink socially abroad . Its a balance you still have to enjoy life . Sometimes the best of all worlds gives best rewards . Its my observation that people who continue working after retirement tend to age better . Its easy to let your mind worry as you get old when you retire you have to much time to think this is not a good thing .

Great to hear from you again, Eddie! And you are looking very well! Congrats on deciding your move date. My prospective move time is age 61 as well, however it is still a long ways away. I have calculated what I think I need to retire without worries to SEA and 61 was the age where, on current salary, I can make it. If things improve financially in the meantime, all the better. I hope you keep us updated on your plans and I look forward to following your progress. Seriously, congratulations on your achievements in the last few months. People may downplay it, but staying sober for that length of time is HUGE. It shows how serious you are about your future, and how successful you are going to be. EDIT - I also share your views on the UK. I gave up on the UK a few years ago and I'm living my life for the better in North America since then. Following the various crises that have happened during the last few years, the UK has completely gone to the dogs. I can say from personal experience that you won't look back.

I retired 21 years ago and moved from Boston, USA to Greece. I had stopped smoking 15 years earlier, and that was difficult but well worth it. I was heavy and felt old. I was only 62 years old. I did not stop drinking completely but cut way back on the booze and the food. I walked a lot and rode my bicycle. The weather here is great. Mostly warm and dry and you can see what is coming. It took a few years but I lost 60 pounds. No more big stress at work with people and schedules. I did have to get a knee replacement when I became 80. I am a little bit wobbly, but feel good. I feel I could go another 20 years. Be sure you have enough income and health insurance. Inflation is a real killer, and the insurance companies keep raising the rates as you get older.

great video with lots to think about, I've retired in Thailand for 18 months. it's been a journey and a learning curve. it is easy to get lost in the bars and the girls but that's not good in the long run. I found it's best to get that out of your system and then calm down, Budgeting got a lot easier not drinking etc. I found a cheaper condo and got my driving license and am looking for an old scooter to do up, I like to bash golf balls down the driving ranges and am looking at learning to sail I think having hobbies is the best way to live. I have made a few mates and go to the bar on Saturday to watch football. It's a quiet life and takes getting used to but that's the clue, it's not easy to change our ways, we have to repeat and repeat every day to get the new ways embedded. Best decision I ever made to leave the UK, I felt old and invisible over there, on the scrap heap. There's no magic wand, plan, take it a day at time.

Hi Eddie loads of comments on this one already so highly doubt you'll end up seeing this but others will of course and its something I feel strongly about. I just turned 55 and I got one those memories for you things that your phone creepily puts together. Most of the pics were from my big 4Oth bash. Far from making me happy they actually had the opposite effect. I had 50 friends at my 40th and 10 percent, so 5 of them, have since passed away. They weren't coal miners or salvage divers, they were all just regular white collar workers. One made it to 52 but the other 4 all died in their late 40"s, 2 from cancer, 1 from a heart attack and one from a grand mal seizure. The 52 year old died from of all things ALS. He was supremely fit so when the numbness started he initially was terrified it was MS. Turned out if was something far far worse and a particularly agressive type of the disease. From diagnosis to death was 9 months. And these 5 were all extremely close friends. If I included school friends, more casual acquaintances and ex work colleagues its more like 10 peoplem. Now I'll finally get to the bleedin point - sorry its taken so long. And its simply this - we all live life like it's forever, or certainly not about to end imminently. The number of times in the comments section on retirement vlogs I'll read something like "only 8 more years and 6 months to go until the pension kicks in and I'll be in sunny Phuket!" So many times I read people saying this stuff like its a given. Even if you are still above ground 8 years later your circumstances may have changed to the point you no longer are able to go or have just lost your confidence. Its such a cliche but life is now, not 8 years from now. None of my 5 friends will ever get to live their retirement dreams because they're dead. And their death at first triggered a deep depression in me to be honest. I shamefully didn't even go to the last funeral. I lied and said I had covid. I still feel horribly guilty about it but I honestly just couldn't do another one after 4 in such short order. I just wasn't up to it mentally. But on the positive side, if you can say that about something so horrible, it completely reshaped my world view and my retirement plans which had been 65 but I just did it 2 months ago at 55. I will be retiring to Malaysia, specifically Penang. I've only been once and that was 30 years ago now, so its all RU-vid and other retirement blogs of people who did it there. I'll also try KL for a bit Anyway I'm sorry this was so long and quite morose but it wasn't meant to be honestly, it was meant to be quite the opposite.

Whatever you do please make sure that you don't burn your bridges..what I mean is have somewhere in the UK to return to..living in the tropics is very different to having a few weeks or months out there.. It didn't work for me and others who I know mostly due to the weather ..day in and day out of oppresive heat & humidity...that's not a life is it ? maybe you'll be different.. Other things to consider are: Health...despite all the other nonsense spouted by 'expert' you tubers you will need health insurance and it's not cheap. Food...expat food is expensive.Thai food is ok but same as the weather...day after day? Transport: how will you get around ? People...Yes they'll smile at you in the hope that you have a stuffed wallet..try walking round showing then an empty wallet..you'll get different looks for sure.. Where will you live? Hopefully it's not the cess pit of humanity called Pattaya..if it is chances are you'll get bored, start drinking again and have your wallet raided by the females and everybugger else including some expats who for a large part tend to look miserable and forlorn.. Please go and try it..I hope it works for you but please keep a base in the UK..it was the best piece of advice I was given when I tried to live in Thailand... Like anywhere living in the UK is what you make it and not listening to all the swill & nonsence out there... Many Thai people would willingly swop places with you and move the other way... Good luck and hope it works for you..

That was great Eddie. Really enjoyed it! You managed to cover quite a few issues/considerations here in 15 minutes! I feel like I've gotta 'pipe up' with my story though! I left England end of August 2015 feeling pretty much the same way you outline in your video... plus watching you walk down an Olde English, remote looking country lane with continous rapid passing traffic only a main road should support... definitely peaked my empathy! Having no idea myself regarding any expectations I was just happy to have the wind behind me at last... freedom to become your own version of happy is priceless! I waited too long like everyone else of course... I'm also 61 by the way! My overall experience would lead me to advise anyone to 'leg it' as soon as you are able... throw caution to the wind... yet I do also respect a meticulously planned escape too! I just ran like Forrest... couldn't stop myself! Luckily, it has worked out fine for me... getting an online Teaching qualification/s being the only real pre-requiste before leaving! I even got rid of everything I had accumulated over my dreary life in England, packing it down into a large backpack... proper Diogenese style freedom... I've never looked back! Is it also fraught with nightmares too? Of course it is... its exactly what makes it worth the gamble... successfully avoiding them! Gathering all the essential local secrets regarding saving money and immigration related 'admin' can be daunting... but equally liberating! Everyone's paradise is out there waiting for them... you just have to summon up the courage to go find it! Best of luck mate!
