At age 28 I was making 6 figures as a lawyer but I couldn’t afford to quit if I wanted. At age 38 I retired and moved to Bali to live on my own terms, achieving my ultimate definition of financial freedom. The difference in that 10 years was that I finally learnt how to manage my finances, recognize my bad money habits and break free from them so today I wanted to share with you the 7 money mistakes I was making that held me back and tips on breaking out.
It's hard to do but the liberation is worth the pain of change. SHARE this video with someone who you think may benefit from it 🤗 Thanks for watching!

I'm an American who lives in Tokyo. Living in Tokyo allows me to save so much money compared to my American friends / colleagues. For example, (1) I do not need a car, since public transportation here is so good, efficient. New US cars average $50,000. Add to this interest paid on the vehical, taxes, insurance, maintenance, gas, speeding tickets, etc, not to mention depreciation, and not needing those four wheels, a total game changer. (2) Japan has socialized medicine. Medical care here is cheap, and excellent quality. And, my Japan taxes are low, overall around 20%. This is because the government regulates prices big pharm and hospitals can charge the people. (3) My rent never increases, by law. Yes, landlords can raise rents, but it is extremely difficult to do so, and rarely done. I live East side of Tokyo, and mine is still at around $550/monthly and has been so for 15 years. (4) Japan has amazing Worker's Rights laws. Getting fired is nearly impossible. Other reasons too. Many of my US friends would (stupidly) refer to this as "socialism," but for me personally, it has allowed me to save far more than almost all of my American friends.

I lived in Fukuoka myself for a year - totally agree. I was an exchange law student in Kyudai back then but i was trying not to live off my dad so the moment i could spend conversational japanese i went off to do arrubaito like teaching english and working in a bar. There are so many social benefits and ways to live reasonably given the standard wage being paid. And so fun! I remember being terribly sick and paying very little despite being bedded and dripped. Good stuff. And the buses are incredibly on time!

@@JeanVoronkova I've been to Fukuoka, twice. Great city, and yet way too small compared to Tokyo. Honestly, I can grab a full meal at the local Denny's / Gustos for less than $10, no tipping needed, ever. And, I get my teeth professionally cleaned four times a year .... I mean why not. It's only $15 to $20 a visit, and cost to fill cavities (should they appear) are less than that. Really like your videos. Inspiring. Am working now to become a minimalist. After all as we get older, we value experiences over things. Hoping to slow travel the world by next year. Cheers to you and your husband.

I have moved from a high paying corporate job where the bottom line really outweighed clients needs (despite what the company presents itself as in terms of vision and mission and strategic goals). Have taken a PT job at a local library and doing a few art courses on the side and getting back into generating some passive income from renting out a space. Hopefully everything will fit together in the end.

hey Etienne thanks for leaving this note and sharing about your present personal journey. Sounds very similar to what I did myself. Fortunate you have a space to rent out to kick start that passive income. Baby steps each day, and everything will come together in the end it all just takes time, so keep faith. I couldn't see where i was going myself for prolly 8 out of that 10 years before i hit Bali retirement capability. That's the mental challenge of walking this path, but i just took a long time myself also. Perhaps the path will be shorter for you (to reach your personal goal).

I'm somewhat in the same shoes. I was splurging in my 20s just because I had good money coming in, bought a large house, sports cars, took expensive vacations. Now at 41 I'm living humbly in an apartment growing a dividend portfolio instead. Laser focused on getting that freedom. I could quit now and go live in Bali or the Philippines or Portugal and never work again, but I am worried it's too early. The question now is how many more years of my life to trade for a more financially well off future. Every year adds security but is also another year of my life and my remaining "youth" gone forever.

having kids in SG really makes it hard to save money in sg :(
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
kids tbh is a difficult subject. If i were to return to SG & start a biz, from what i have observed, I would def do smtg related to children's health, care or education, since there's so much pressure on SG parents to "provide the best" within their ability and that seems to translate to businesses being able to impose ridiculous costs/measures for anything child related. I was bringing my niece and nephew to Novena square for tuition and music lessons regularly. Shocked to see one of the tuition centres there - their frontage looked like a 5 star hotel concierge desk? Apparently a premium tuition centre in SG. Made me shake my head to be honest.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
but i guess, on the flip side, if you're able to maintain a sensible attitude and balance between providing for the kids and resisting all that marketing, kids bring so much joy to the family! I know this from my niece and nephew - love them lots. Whenever i'm in SG i always take them skateboarding and all the outdoorsy stuff.

Please tell me if you're 40 and have nothing saved, LIKE ZERO... Where do you start in order to retire?
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
u start TODAY, with everything and whatever you are doing. Scrutinise your spending habits and expenditures, figure out what you can minimise or what is excessive or where's the "leak", downsize habits and brands where necessary and all that can be the start of your savings. U shd probably also start learning investing so that once you accumulate a decent sum of extra savings beyond your nest egg, you can use that to invest cautiously to try to grow your retirement pot. Slow and steady wins the race. Making a difference by just 1% consistently everyday can build to tremendous change over time to make a big difference at the end.
@hubertcumberdale2651
@hubertcumberdale2651 Год назад
Lets be real, "retiring" is different when wealth is pooled between the incomes and net worths of two romantic partners such as the situation you are in. Very different for single people, who have to pay the same price for a roof over their head on one income source.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
i wd definitely agree that its only realistic to say that the combined finances of 2 people who work well together and have similar money values are definitely more beneficial than one stand alone person, but to clarify, both my hubs and myself started off this journey as mere surf instructors working for an employer and were in a similar financial position of getting by but not anywhere near particularly wealthy. We later started a surf school business together that worked out well and that was i suppose the start of our turning point, together with the good habits as per video.

Can you please do a video on the many shortcomings of Bali? Like lack of proper sanitation, ocean pollution, air pollution, traffic jams, few sidewalks, crowds and etc.. Perhaps an honest pro and cons will better educate your FIRE expat audience so they understand the true realities of your or their personal choice.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
actually, the portrayal of Bali in our videos is honestly how we experience Bali. Yes there are all those things you mentioned for sure - but in truth they do not affect our quality of life in any significant way because of how we live and where we have chosen to live. If you yourself were to make that video, how long would you spend talking about "lack of proper sanitation"? By what standards? whose? We lived in Vietnam, China, Sri Lanka and many other places before this - you know what? Bali's sanitation standards seem really awesome to us, and in our daily normal life we never feel its "lacking". Traffic? Our lifestyle makes it such that we're barely stuck in any jams at all and we're mostly driving along quiet roads. Sure it's cos we're hermits who don't go out much and our favourite surf spots are in more isolated places .... but that's our truth? You should probably make this request of other RU-vidrs who choose to live in Canggu. They'll have loads more material to air over video probably.

Always curious - when you quit the rat race at 38, after 10 years of 6 figure per annum, how much did you save?
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
Hi Zach thanks for this note - think you got my story a lil confused. So i was making 6 figures p.a. as a lawyer up till my big Quit at 29, i didnt take much note of the moment when i walked off how much savings i had, but i remember when i checked maybe 2 years later i had only about 30k cash in my bank account ..... :/ ya i know. those were my financially unconscious years. So anyway, in the 10 years since the quit, i was frugal and learnt about money and i worked a lot of diff jobs n started some businesses, last of which (w my hubs) was pretty successful, we invested in some real estate overseas (not SG) and the rentals plus some other passive income is enough for our monthly simple living in Bali.

I guess she rents. Dont belive in these videos, where people sharing their "success stories". You are in another situation. Maybe in worse, maybe in better. Naturally if you have kids, and you cant save any, you cant invest any, and wont get any. Thats the reality.

A lot of people spend money out of their means. Also some people buy things they can not afford. One important thing some people do is, they do not file their taxes, and then they owe the IR. Those type of things will keep people poor. Also I believe you need to be disciplined with your money. Great seven tips Jean sweetheart. I always love you're knowledge. Jean like I told you can be a financial advisor sweetheart.

hi Dom, totally agree, sounds super obvious but so many people just let money slip through their paws too easily without paying attention, or they get a tad too happy spending on credit. It's sad to see people you know struggling in debt cycles that could have been easily avoided in the first place. I'm glad you seem very much aware and probably have really good money habits!

I really loved your content, but it now feels like one long infomercial. The videos theme and message is now fitted to the big reveal (sponsor) at the end. It's unfortunate.
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
well I do select my sponsors duh.... and for the last 6 months we are content to be more at home and settled so I've been focusing on information-based videos as opposed to the travel and food stuff... I'm sorry if the finance/life/retirement related topics aren't interesting to you...when we do travel again we'll feature the food and travel stuff in Bali then
@JRspeaking
@JRspeaking Год назад
@@JeanVoronkova Those topics are very much of interest to me and you deliver the content in a calm, logical, articulate manner. It's just that lately the content seems disingenuous, as it's formulated to fit a sponsor, not your real life. Just my two cents. ( I think it's important- maybe wrongfully so- for content creators to hear various subscribers opinions.)

Stay out of debt and live within your means. For today's world, keep accumulating gold and other tangible assets. Holding gold protects you from inflation and it has no counter party risk.

the same old financial advise that everyone else gives, 'buy an ETF and wait for 30 years' this wasnt of any help, wish you the best in your Bali boredom but if you want to help others, why you dont explain, how are you making money now, only youtube? what other incomes you guys have? if property, please explain where, how much down payment and how did you negotiate your mortgage payments. that will help people not telling people to not waste your money and buy an index fund thats not how you retire at 38
@JeanVoronkova
@JeanVoronkova Год назад
dude, u seem to think i got some extra secret magic trick in one of my drawers but truth is - i literally did all that stuff in my video, over about 8 years, saved up enough to buy some advantageous real estate and we live real simply in Bali so the math balances. It's all documented in the videos on this channel. If you watch only one and then complain you didn't get the full picture - hey sorry, that's cos my 40 year life journey can't be summarized in a 10 min video. On the other hand, if you're pooh poohing simple hard real life truths and thinking all the ppl out there having something u desire did some magic trick u don't know about - i'll advise u to wake up. "If you added up all the time wasted searching for shortcuts and trying to cheat the process, the hard work could have already been done by now." - James Clear.

It’s easy to be financially free. JUST HAVE LOW EXPECTATIONS. Many folks can easily be financially free but just choose to continue working because they want more and also because they don’t have much else to do. Personally, I have been financially free since I hit 40yrs old but I prefer to be RICH F.I.R.E and continue to work for fun and additional $$$$….
