The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. Around 99% of all Gen X still has some form of debt. They also hold the highest median non-mortgage debt of 33K (this is pure debt that can't be cancelled out by an underlying asset). Debt is generally counter to savings and the higher the debt you have, the older you are, the less likely you are to have significant savings. And if they do own a home (or live in it), they can't be considered savings, as its generally unlikely for them to sell the home for their retirement.

99% of people in America "retire" with less than $400,000 saved. Anyone that is about to retire with multiple millions is doing quite well. over 30% of boomers are "retiring" with literally nothing outside of a 20K bank account. I'm only 30 and based on conservative calculators I will be about 3.5-4MM between 401k and Roth. This is massively unrealistic for almost all Americans. According to Empower Retirement the most common 401k Balance for people in their 50s is: $255,036 this is as of 2023. I almost have that amount at 30.... If you are 3 million in on your accounts you are over 11 times greater the MOST COMMON 401k Balance for people in their 50s. To say you are not ready is only a issue of your standard of living. If you own a 6000 sqft home and have 3 cars. own a lake house for the summer, go on trips and have expensive hobbies. I get it. That's my mom, she has property taxes that are the cost of what the average American makes in a year pre-tax. She can't have a retirement income of 76,000 a year. she just cant, her operating costs are too high. But this isn't how "normal" americans are living. They don't have properties with taxes that are $30,000 a year. They have 1400sqft homes that have $1400 a year in taxes. Someone with 10mm net worth and rental properties on top of that is absolutely is a 1%er.... They can afford to retire, can they afford to retire and spend money like someone earning 900,000 a year does? maybe not. 3.5% withdrawal on your 3MM is a 100,000 income a year of that one account. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 37.1% of U.S. households earned at least $100,000 in 2022. So your retirement account will earn you more money WITHOUT working than 63% of 2 income earner households............ 3.5% withdrawal on your friends 10MM is 350,000 a year...... Look my goals are such that I will aim to be like your friends or yourself with multi-million dollar retire accounts. Dividend income, rental properties and small business income. But the Average American is not someone with 1million dollars in an account much less 3mm or 10mm.
