Hey guys and gals, for this video I'm trying something a bit different with the narration. Rather than talking about what you're seeing I kept tabs on the comments from earlier version of this video and tried to address the most common questions. Hope this is informative, clears up some confusion and that you enjoy it. Let me know if this is something that you'd like me to do in the future...

I love this style of narration as much as your others where you explain what you're doing, very interesting to hear about your thought process and to hear you address some questions/comments as well :)
Do you think the competition is going to pick up the phone? How did you determine it was over cleaned? Thats totally impossible without knowing their solvents ;technique and actually watching them in action.
A A I mean it was clearly overcleaned because the top layer of paint is badly stripped, and the before picture didn't have that extensive level of damage. Now, you could argue that it was an earlier cleaning but with the information we have it's equally reasonable to assume that the most recent known conservation attempt stripped it.
Legend says he's still sitting on the foot to this day, fearing the day when Julian finally finds him and drags him to hell and back for his dismal restoration job

Stanley Tam In Norwegian, there are definitely “wet” jokes. Example: - Waiter, there’s a hearing aid in my soup. - Speak louder, I can’t hear what you’re saying!
In a previous video and/or Instagram post, he mentioned that because of careful planning and practice, he never made a terrible error on any restoration job. (I added this comment incase he didn't have time to respond to your thoughtful question; I hope you don't mind.)

I would like to disagree. Believing that nothing you do is harmful is one of the most dangerous ways to live your life. If not for you, than at least for the people around you, who you may cause great harm, because you aren't careful and believe you cannot harm them
@@BRAMB0SSS You're absolutely right. Although, I believe the point was that we should try to live our lives in a way that doesn't cause permanent effects or harm to anyone or anything.
Bram den Braber It’s about the _effort_ to make sure that we do as little harm as possible. To just believe we’re not doing any harm without doing our best to avoid harm obviously isn’t a good way to live.

I loved hearing your line of thought! The latest part was especially wholesome and made my heart flutter. . . . ...and then I remembered that staples are inferior.
If there's anything that I've learned from watching these video, it's that tacks are far superior to staples and that Belgian linen is great for a tacking edge
@@Cybornut My impression was the overcleaning was done over the years, not necessarily by the one conservator... I might be wrong. I missed the part of where it said the conservator was using oils instead of acrylics...

I love it when you throw shade in these videos, usually at other conservators or clients. I am trash who loves salt, and it is hilarious to hear it in such a professional manner.

Great idea.... because the visual aspect of conserving *paintings* is so unimportant right. I couldn't think of a worse idea for this content even after trying. Great job.
Wow that was very negative! I think all Jordi meant was that Baumgartner should do a podcast in addition to his RU-vid videos, because he has such a relaxing voice. Obviously videos are required for showing his actual work on the paintings, but there are other things he could talk about that wouldn't require that medium, such as the history of art restoration or commentaries on some of the current news in the art restoration world. He could even focus on a different artist in each one and outline the main techniques and materials they used. He probably won't do this as it would be a fair bit of extra work, but if he did do a podcast where he talked about such things it could be very successful because he has the kind of voice that people like to listen to. Honestly, I'll never understand why some people on the Internet are so quick to rip others to shreds, it's so unnecessarily mean and completely counteracts the calming, professional environment that people like Baumgartner try to create.
Moth depends on when it was done. During every era the majority would have used state of the art techniques but over the decades and centuries the state of the art techniques have become obsolete as knowledge, materials and techniques have massively improved. What looks inept to our eyes today would have been fine at the time. This is pretty much what JULIAN (keep calling him Jason, see below) is saying about his own work now which is why he makes everything reversible.

I am an amateur photographer who does a lot of retouching in Photoshop. I am amazed at how useful your videos are as training material for what I do. I salute your skills, artistry, and dedication.
The only complaint I have about your videos is, once I start watching I can't stop! I am utterly amazed by your work! Your so lucky to do what you do. You obviously love your work.
"Pretty rough state" is a massive understatement... It was a complete shitshow...! The past conservator should be sued for totally ruining this painting... This is ridiculous...!
@@jennycorey8968 Did you fail to see the photo of the after/before...? I can understand you might confuse the photos, they look mixed up, but the white baby is the after, then skin-tone baby is the before...
@@MichaelBerthelsen Plot twist: white people exist. The painting on the right is obviously discolored. Of course, Baumgartner could have cleaned it much more carefully without damaging the painting.
@@VulpesVulpes42 When one has the skin tone of a white baby, and the other looks paper/canvas white, one is a good painting, the other is a fuck-up by a conservator. Edit: 1:12: The right is before first 'conservation', the left is after first 'conservation'. That's a shit job.
You know there's several cultures that believe once you put a face on something that is when it comes alive. Saying that you save the face for last it made me think of that.

I want to know the cost of a project like this. Dozens of hours of work, even before the painting is in his hands, by an expert conservator. I can’t imagine.
That is a very good question. I've asked an expert conservator for a painting I bought. She estimated 1500 euros and another 500 for the frame. She works for museums as well.
Yeah, considering the expertise, materials, extreme amount of time, and high value of the subject, I can easily imagine this being a five digit project.
@@ChannelJoris - I would guess the price might go up or down depending on how old and precious the painting is and the amount of damage that needs fixing.
i love how he phrases the whole situation in the most professional and calm way when we all know the client was pissed/probably as fuuuuuuukkkk (probably bc he didn’t want anymore damage and was paranoid lol, and why give this poor guy all ur drama when he just wants to do his job??) and the previous conservator was shit lmao

I would guess they're probably greatly satisfied, or else they wouldn't have given permission for the painting to be featured in Baumgartner's RU-vid channel.
This was so much more enjoyable with the narration :) Also I would consider taking off the camera auto focus during the time lapses, just leaving it on the canvas. The constant change of focus got a little bit distracting. Amazing work as always.
