---
In this narrated extended-play video, Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration, the oldest and now second generation conservation studio in Chicago focuses on the conservation of a portrait by the English painter Cornelius Janssens.
The painting was considerably dirty with accumulated grime as well as a discolored varnish. In addition there was quite a bit of overpainting throughout the clothing that needed to be removed as well as some in the background that was attempting to cover up a minor indentation. Structurally, the painting's old lining and animal adhesive were removed, a new tacking edge added, the stretcher cleaned and the painting re-stretched. Finally, the frame was cleaned and minor restoration was performed on losses.
All of the materials used during this conservation are archival and fully reversible. The techniques performed seek to be as minimally invasive as possible and respectful of the original materials, techniques and artistic vision. All of the work performed adheres to the AIC Code of Ethics.
This video is not meant to be instructional or provide detailed guidance for the application of materials or techniques used in conservation.
---
Cornelius Janssens was an English painter of portraits of Dutch or Flemish parentage. He was active in England during the early 1600's and then in the Netherlands between 1646 and 1652 when he died in Utrecht.
Janssens painted many portraits of emerging new English gentry. He was an accomplished portrait painter, gaining many patrons and benefactors throughout his career. His style varied considerably over time, and he was able to assimilate new influences into his own style keeping his up to date with the fashions and trends of his day. He was particularly accurate and detailed in his depiction of clothing which has become a valuable resource for costume historians.
Janssens work can be found in the National Gallery, the Tate Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, Royal Collection, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the Dulwich Picture Gallery as well as galleries and many private collections throughout the world.

It's a good combination of showing what he does in sections that are just long enough to hold your interest at a time, explaining and narrating every step with a soft voice and really good camerawork/editing that simply keeps you glued to it. For a video like this it's the journey, not the goal, even though the goal of the before and after is well worth it.

I agree, I would LOVE to see a full on documentry on Julian restoring a really well known painting!! An entire tv series!! Netflix, get on this please!! Or PBC? This seems like a PBC/BBC sort of thing. Then Netflix! But... . (Puts nerd glasses on) Unfortunately, it would not be the Mona Lisa, or any of Leonardo Da Vinci's works (such as the Last Super). Da Vinci worked in a very unique way where he continued to work on a painting forever. He would add layer on layer of paints and varnishes for many years. This is what gives his works their amazing sense of depth. Unfortunately, he also worked in such a way that his paintings were not really made to last. He did not use mediums and techniques that perserved well and are very unstable. It is not really possible for anyone, no matter the expertise, to try to clean them as the paintings are just far too unstable. All we can do for the Da Vinci paintings is to keep them in the most stable enviroment as we can and hope the hold up as long as possible. *I am just a normal person with no expertise other than my own interest in the field and research (googling, lol) I have done myself. If I say anything that is incorrect, please forgive me and correct me so I can learn. Thank you! . (Glasses off) But for real, I would binge the you know what out of a series of these on Netflix!

This man has the patience of an immortal. I have had little interest in art (other than the passive enjoyment of it) and yet I find these conservation videos enthralling for the amount of time, delicacy, the surgeon's touch... So much goes into this and so much relies on a master's understanding of chemical compounds, historical methods, and raw gut instinct. This is truly one of the most impressive works of art in and of itself to restore history to former glory while being so very careful to make sure that it's known that it's a restoration and that in the future repairs to said repairs can be accomplished or completely undone.

As an artist in this age, I love his restoration comments as it makes me prepare my work for the inevitable march of time. I almost never applied isolation layers to my painting before, but after trying to remove a bad varnish job I had done to a painting I realized how necessary it is to preserve unstable pigments (especially blues, greens and red based browns). I also now lock in my keys better and remove staples on bad struts, replacing them with higher quality tacks. I hope when a conservator comes across my work they have an easy time realizing my original intentions. I’m sure every artist whose art he as touch is roaring with enthusiasm.

I'm gonna guess his answer would be Polyurethane. Specifically the 80 minutes of video he posted of him scraping the shit off a painting.

Did you noticed how passionately he smoothed the surface of the canvas while applying the pressure on the table? I never wanted to become a painting so bad, after seeing that.

Would you ever consider making a video on removing previous conservations? Like what previous conservation efforts have you encountered and how well/poorly have those efforts kept the painting safe? Also how reversible were previous conservation efforts?

I think in one of the videos he removed some old conservation work. Don't remember which video it was and when the previous conservation was done though.

I wonder what the worst restoration work he has seen. The famous disastrous conservation of the Ecce Homo fresco in Spain comes to mind. That has to be the worst disaster ever in the history of conservations, not even Baugartner could save that one.

Sometimes he posts short videos of bad conservation work on his Instagram.

@@John_Longbow - I bet he could do it though.......it would just take a VERY long time. On the plus side, there is NO way to make it worse than it already is. I mean the only way is up for that once beautiful artwork. I never forget how mad that old lady was that people didn't like what she'd done! She seemed mad she'd 'tried to fix it' and people didn't appreciate the effort - but if SHE hadn't destroyed it in the first place she wouldn't have needed to 'fix it'. Who looks at a painting and thinks "yeah I really need to scrub that with neat bleach"? Boggled my brain that did! LOL!

@@Selicre Yes indeed, i had to read up on the story. I am glad there was a silver lining in that mess. I like to imagine that old lady was more crafty than anyone ever realized. Still, it is pretty hard to unsee that fresco. Regards

I love your job, if only I had heard about painting restoration many years ago. Now being too old and terminally ill I am somewhat satisfied by watching you, thank you, truly.
