I built this retractable metal hobby train table for a client who wanted to have something in his garage he could keep his trains setup on year round and still be able to park his car. I fabricated metal locking legs and all of the pieces to hook this up to a motor so it can be controlled by remote. This is part one of a three part build.

Years ago when I worked for Alas Van Lines, I moved a man and his wife from Santa Fe NM to south TX hust west of Dallas, anyway in the garage he had his train setup (HO scale) in his garage. He also had it on a weight and balance setup, so what ever the train setup weighed he had weights on the other end of the ropes to counter balance the weight. He could raise it to get the cars in and when he wanted to play he would move the cars out and down came the train setup. The whole thing was the same contour of the garage minus about 6 inches all the way around. Just in case You wood like to know

I enjoy watching a craftsman at work. So many ways to build most of his projects and watching him go through his process on each project is the cool part of his channel. Your certainly appreciated sir!!

Дорогой Джимбо, берегите своё тело от ультрафиолета при сварке металлов. Ультрафиолет опасен. Он канцерогенен. Спасибо вам за видео, на которых вы демонстрируете приёмы работы. Михаил.

Great build! Enjoyed seeing the old lathe's final accomplishments. Regarding the "almost-true" holes for the feet levelers, if you first cut the length of the round bar and put it on the lathe, you could bore the hole through at true center, then slice off the leg caps.

Why don't you do as the trainmodelman, hang the table(extension) from your ceiling above where you need it? that way it's out of the way but available.

Can anyone advise on what kind of tolerances i can expect if i order rectangular tubing mitre cut to specific lengths for a desk project. If i order pieces that are 19" long should i expect that they will all be exactly 19" long or should i allow for some error and if so what would be acceptable +/-. The tubing is 2×4 and is 1/8" thick. Thx

Hi there I'm a welder I've been welding for about five years now and I'm wondering you come up with all these things our you have plans from Engineers or do you do all the drawings and then actually do the peace

Would you have more information to show the setup for this? I know that you don't normally show much of the customer side, but I find this interesting to see more of the final product.

Just wondering why when you were cutting the stock you had a square tube extending the piece being cut further forward?

I do the same thing, it puts the material in the middle of the saw blade specially if you’re cutting at angles.

I’m a model railroader as well and if you can’t reach the middle of the table to weld it then the customer certainly can’t reach the middle as well. Most people will try to stick to about 5’ across so you only have to reach 30” at most. I know you’re building it according to plans but 78” wide is way too wide. I think www.builtbynewkirk.com/ failed in designing this too big. The concept of being able to raise it out of the way is a great one.

Wayne Crews I’m a model railroader as well. I agree with you completely. I wonder if the client is new to the hobby. Lots of guys get into it late in life with unreasonable expectations.

better way for the feet plugs would be to drill the bar stock first then tap it. Lastly cut them. Save all the bit changing time.

If you were to sell your welding machines for a 3 in 1 machine you would make more space. That 9 welding cart holding system is hindering you at this point.
