There is a lot of shame in being unemployed because it makes one feel like they were not enough or a failure. I recently met an attractive guy and the work issue came up I wasn't sure if I should say that I am unemployed incase they then consider me a girl who would be a financial burden. I ended just telling them the truth ngoba I don't know for how long I would keep up a lie. With regard to desperation I did start applying for jobs that I qualified for but was not really interested in. It drained me so much emotionally and felt like I would be taking myself back to the same position I was trying to get out of. The process does really mess with one's mind. I am currently paying for a bond and should I run out of funds I feel like I have no other place to go to because I am building a home that I never had so I won't fail. The one thing I am sure of is that I will make it through and will not lose this home.

Retrenchment and unemployment is real. I have this new thing where I don't ask people in social settings what they do for a living because honestly its an uncomfortable question and conversation starter considering how bad the economy is. Chances are someone might be unemployed in that social setting. Now people must lie about what they do because of the shame of being unemployed. Also people can often size you and decide what level of respect they give you based on what you do. Now imagine saying your unemployed, you might not even be taken seriously.

This was so beautiful to watch! I relate a lot to the feeling of shame. I think it stems from wanting to be self sufficient and not dependent on anyone because I doubt there would be shame if you lost your job and then won the lotto.

I've loved Bonga since the episode where you talked about navigating the work environment as a new, entry-level employee. That episode helped me so much-now I can cope with most things at work. Keep it up, guys! ❤

Triggering episode but what a beautiful and informative episode. Thank you for being vulnerable Bonga, this happened to my sister while i was in my training contract and I had to step up and take care of her and her 2 kids. After 3 years of not securing a job she finally found something exciting and when I tell you, we reflect to the times when we were struggling and make the most of the time we in now i am not joking. It does feel like PTSD when you don’t want to spend money but to save it or invest it. I think because of her situation and being secondary affected in a way i really understand what you mean when you say save for retrenchment. Thank you for sharing ❤

I actually went through the retrenchment process but I went with a voluntary separation option because I had been wanting to leave for some time but was just waiting to get another job. I just decided to take the jump. I'm on the five month mark and nothing has been secured yet. I think my perception on retrenchment has helped me not feel offended by them. I see everything as a contract coming to an end at some point. What helped me was that I was ready to go. Had I not been feeling like that I would definitely be devastated by it. It's worse for people with kids. It's funny how we look to HR for answers during the process, and yet they're going through the same thing. We just forget to give grave to them because of how we see them. Thanks Bonga, you have really been a voice of reason for many of us here. Happy you are not back at making money sosi❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉

Bonga touched on two things I struggle with the most. The two managers who were sitting across me after 6 years telling me I wasn’t qualified to do the same job I had been doing for the past 6 years. I associate them with that experience and not in a good way. I hope one day I wake up and never think of them…at least I have moved from anger/bitterness. I started in my current job February 2023 (5 year contract), yet I am soooo jittery looking for another job.

Trying to tap back into something you used to do is hard. Very few people get it and accuse us of underselling ourselves. Continuity is actually a privilege some don't get to experience

Can’t get over how beautiful you ladies are 😂❤. Our jobs mean so much to us because they are i.e source of income, for some people living out your passions etc… losing that hurts. Can’t imagine how much it hurts to lose your job.

I went through retrenchment in 2020 at a company I was with for over 7 years. Stayed at home for a year and I have moved through 3 different companies in the last two years because I also don't feel secure in companies anymore.

Oh Bonga ❤️thank you for your vulnerability. There’s so much strength in vulnerability and sharing your story. I can absolutely relate after having walked a similar path. You have comforted many with your story and shared some valuable gems. I love how you were able to find some silver linings in the midst of the storm and still find comfort from your support system. May you soar high and continue to radiate your beam and light. May your cup overflow. Sending endless hugs your way sis 🫂❤

Moving from maternity leave back to work I did feel like being a working mom is very unnatural. Yes, we do it and we are grateful we can but sometimes it does feel like we are giving up too much to be able to balance the working and the mothering

For Americans listeners retrenchment means layoff. This is so relatable. But when I was retrenched I had to take a much lower paying service job so I wouldn't dip in to savings. Still at job too.

I really like Bonga's advice around preparing for a possible retrenchment. Seeing how she managed to navigate this circumstance as a financially literate person is so much of a relief compared to someone who isn't financially literate.

*Tapole stuck on my throat* the moment Bonga got emotional... Sorry Bonga Botha❤ I laugh now, but it was not funny when it happened to me. Being the only colleague who got retrenched. ( I guess they were being polite) in hindsight... I believe I was fired. To date I can never THANK God enough for that situation. Had I not been retrenched,I was never gonna meet the current me. Funny enough I also saw it coming and still, I had no plan be. Bonga, I was also in recruitment 😂 Man! Because Modimo ke Modimo wa mehlolo. Goodness and Mercy has followed me everywhere I go now. I am not scared of being unemployed, now I am a hustler of note. #DjSbuHasMultiplied😅 hooi hoooi. I love you TCC team❤
