Retro Camera Review: Panasonic Omnipro PK-959 Newvicon Video Camera (1985)

Today we take a look at the Panasonic Omnipro PK-959, a vintage Newvicon color video camera. Manufactured in June 1985, this camera sold for about $700 (in 1985 dollars), and was part of a two piece "portapak" set up that predated the camcorder. This video camera has some cool features, including a character generator for titles and a QWERTY keyboard.
The footage at the end of the video was shot using a Sony SLO-340 Betamax recorder from 1978, recorded at the BI speed. All other footage was captured using a Sony DCR-TRV520 Digital8 camcorder.

I used to have this camera without the video tape unit. I also had a quasar vk743ue which was electrically identical to this Panasonic camera. I could talk all day about the hack that I did to make these two cameras gen lock to each other into a mixing desk that I had back in the '80s.

This camera was also sold as General Electric 1CVC6036E. I bought one recently along with PV-8000 VTR and many accessories for 300PLN (around 70USD). Everything is in fully working condition except red and blue potentiometers in the camera that need regeneration. Apparently these GE branded cameras are even rarer than Panasonic.

Yes, Panasonic manufactured these cameras and VCRs for other companies such as RCA, GE and Canon. I have a PV-9000 which has HiFi but I'm waiting for a power supply for it. I'm also waiting for a Canon VR-40 to arrive that I purchased from shopgoodwill. It's basically a rebranded PV-9000.

My dad still has his laying around, w the portable vcr. I wonder if it can be hooked to a rca to hdmi, to a capture card, to a laptop.

Sadly, replacing the vidicon tube on these cameras is a extremely complicated process, on black-and-white vidicon cameras it was easy to replace the tube, as well as the individual tubes in three tube color cameras. However, on single-tube color cameras (like the PK-959, which uses a single Newvicon tube) it is extremely difficult, you needed specialized requirement in order to do it because of how the color was extracted from the single tube. It was very precise and even the slightest mistake would cause things to be all off. I wouldn't even attempt to replace the tube in a single-tube color camera. I would maybe try to replace one of the tubes on my Sony DXC-M3A, which uses three Saticon tubes.

I use a Digital8 camcorder for capture and I use QTGMC to deinterlace my footage from 60i to 60p. All analog NTSC video is 60Hz, it just needs to be deinterlaced properly.

Yeah, Panasonic had a lot of features on their consumer PKs, like the character generator. Sony's cameras had better quality but lack features that Panasonic had.

I was wondering do you need the camera to be plugged in to work or is there a battery? For example could I film outside In a field? I’m looking at a Panasonic PK-771 at the moment and not sure if I should buy it.

What you do to capture vhs tapes at hd 60fps? Because of when i digitalize my tapes the quality and the framerate is lower

I use a Digital8 camcorder for capture. It captures at 720x480 at 60i. I use StaxRip to upscale to 1440x1080, and QTGMC to deinterlace to 60p.

Hi Martin, unfortunately the lens can not be take off and doesn't use a mount. If you are looking for a Panasonic with a removable lens the PK-973 model from 1983 has a c-mount lens you can easily remove and put on another camera.

Hey dude, just got the same camera. I got a question, it seems that on my AC box there is a rather strange video out. Not a yellow RCA. Would you kindly describe how you output from the power supply to a tv (I assume using RCA)

Well this is actually was plugs into the ac adapter. So this is the camera input, what I have on the other side is a red rca output for audio and (the mysterious video output I don't know about). Do you have an ac adapter box with such a configuration ? (thanks for the reply btw) Else I'll send you a picture

Since I made this video, I have acquired a Canon VR-40 from 1984/85 that was built by Panasonic. It works and it also has HiFi sound with is a bonus. You could use it as a portable audio recorder.

@@kennyloish4682 They show up on shopgoodwill.com all the time so you can easily get one. Might be a gamble because they aren't tested but eventually you'll find one that works.

I wonder why the colours look like this, can there be more natural and sharp colours if the settings / calibration is done better? Beautiful i love tube kameras.

Unfortunately single tube cameras don't get much better than this. Sony's Trinicon system managed to get better color fidelity but still it's a single tube camera. If you want the best color from a tube camera you would want to get a 3 tube broadcast pro camera.

WAT THA FUCK !! WHAT BLACK MIRROR SHYIT DID THIS GUY JUST DO IN THE END OF THE VIDEO WHEN HE POWERED UP THAT CAMERA NOW !! ?? :-O HE WENT BACK IN 1985 THE MOMENT HE POWERED UP DAT CAMERA !!! ..
