Retro Gaming on VGA Monitors

Using a vga monitor for retro gaming with classic consoles can be a great way to use an older vga monitor. Old school vga monitors are generally far higher quality and provide a much better picture vs televisions for retro gaming, but you need to adapt their composite or s-video output to vga. That's where the Neoteck Alloy composite / s-video to vga converter comes in.
WIth the Neoteck converter you can once again enjoy retro games in high quality on vga monitors - all for only $16 at the time of recording. With so many old school crt (and flat panel) vga monitors around, retro gaming on vga is a great option - why leave those classic consoles gathering dust?
The Neoteck av to vga converter is one of many options for retro gaming on vga monitors, but at a very low price it is worth taking a look at. In this video, I test the Neoteck converter with retro consoles and computers for gaming on vga monitors. Spoiler alert - lag measured in post was less than 12ms...

I am very interested in the new Orange Pi 800 keyboard computer. It has VGA out along side the HDMI. I am just waiting for Android 12 to be finished for it so that I can run Retro Arch on it. I have the Mayflash Gamecube/SNES/N64 VGA adapter and was stunned at how great everything looked.

Great video! Would this converter allow me to play Sega Saturn on any old VGA monitor? I'm pretty new to all of this, but any help is appreciated!

Thanks! Yes it will. The composite output from the Saturn is "in spec" and works well with VGA and HDMI converters. As an aside, you can also get a component cable for the Saturn which will give you even higher quality vs the composite output, but you would need a component to VGA converter for your old monitor. I haven't reviewed one yet, but I did review the Portta component to HDMI converter/scaler and it performed very well. As long as your monitor is under 20 inch, both composite and component are good options. Thanks again for watching!

I tried to play my ps2 on my vga monitor, my ps2 has free mcboot, so I wanted the best possible quality, I used my component ps2 cable and connected it to a component to hdmi adapter and then hooked another adapter, this time the hdmi to vga adapter, and got a black screen with the message "out of rank" I didnt want to give up so I had to use my tv and in opl video settings adjusted the video quality to 720p and made the opl to boot as soon as the ps2 is turned on, and got a black screen again when I tried to load a game, then I remembered you can adjust the video output of the game with the gsm option, I had to set the game to 480p to finally be able to play my ps2 games on real hardware on my vga monitor, kind of messy but it worked, would be better using a component to vga adapter but I actually bought one in apparently my monitor was not compatible, maybe to some interlace problem.

Glad you were able to get it working on your TV. The PS2 can be finicky to get working with converters. I think a lot of issues have to do with the PS2 switching back and forth between 240p, 480i, and 480p during menus and game screens (some older games including PS1 games run at 240p). Some scalers and TVs misinterpret 240p as 480i and show a black screen. If this happens and you are using an HDMI to VGA converter it will probably show out of range on the VGA monitor. Frame rates can be an issue as well with VGA showing out of range (has a lot to do with frequency settings). Component scalers that support 240p and 480i/p like the Retrotinks generally solve these issues (many do not support 240p) even when using component to HDMI and then HDMI to VGA converters. Thanks again for the detailed explanation of your steps in setting up the PS2!

Wish there was something cheap for scart. Ive seen people use ossc for ps1 and snes and it looks insane. Almost like a pvm. But ossc is extremely expensive

OSSC works really well. I haven't seen an inexpensive scart to vga, but I have heard good things about this scart to hdmi converter scaler: www.amazon.com/TNP-Converter-Adapter-Upscaler-Connector/dp/B0177DG71S/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=scart+to+hdmi+converter&qid=1638664658&sr=8-4 I have had a few people tell me they use this one which is even less expensive: www.amazon.com/ZHIYUEN-Adapter-Universal-Converter-Consumption/dp/B07WTV8FGF/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=scart%2Bto%2Bhdmi%2Bconverter&qid=1638664732&sr=8-5&th=1 Hope this helps out!

@@askdrtk yeah i wanna use my consoles on an old pc vga crt. I found a Sony one and it looks insane when connected to a pc. I run some emulators and I'm pretty happy with it. But nothing beats using the real thing

I’m with you - As good as emulation is, I like using the original hardware when I can. I’ll keep an eye out for a scart to vga and shoot you a reply if I find something worth looking at that isn’t $$$.

Would you be able to play light gun games on the crt monitor for genesis/megadrive with this convertor?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 2 года назад
Light guns are generally not compatible with converters as light guns operate by syncing their input with crt output. Anything that alters the latency (converters) generally place the sync timing out of spec and therefore the light gun doesn't function. This generally applies to any change in the display refresh rate vs the original crt (and largely 480i) that the light gun coding has been written for in the game. VGA (both crt and flat panel) and flat panel TVs and monitors all fall outside light gun specs. Hope this helps out.

@@askdrtk yeah I thought all three were good 👍🤣 now if the master system light phaser worked.....Bank panic,rescue mission and secret command would be worth the price of the monitor alone! I miss 1986......

👍It's funny, but as most people have been disposing of their old crts over the past 20 years, I still find myself looking for them at yard sales and refurb shops...
