I'm gonna miss the energy the old trio had, but I love the laid back vibes of your new reviews, it makes it feel more personal instead of "this is a show where we buy random wacky things and mess around" (which will always have a place in my heart). Looking forward for more!
Dope or nope has always been just him reviewing things. He did apps, Amazon items, etc, so he’s going back to his roots, which I really appreciate. Welcome back, Matthias.
@@kaleichristensen4463 it does kind of suck that they're not doing the reviews with Matthias anymore, but they have moved on and are doing their own thing now. Such is the way of life.
i can smell the audiophiles dying at him not being able to find tracks, calling mid range headphones expensive, and buying 1k worth of dac at double the price.
It's also downright wrong, I don't know this guy so I am not sure if it's part of the personality but a lot of the stuff he got wrong could have been solved with a simple search. That product might not appeal to the casual consumer, but that is because it's not made for them,it's made for audiophiles. Those people have no problems spending a big amount of money in new sound products, so the price point and the obtaining of lossless music formats it's not a problem for most of them.
this feels way more mature and thorough. I've always watched dope or nope no matter what, but I think this new format is honestly a huge improvement and it seems way more relaxed at the same time.
Matt used to get up to early jacksepticeye levels of loud around 2 - 4+ years back. It was still fun to watch and he wasn't faking his energy but boy was he loud. He's definitely chilled out a lot
@JustWatchingSomeStuff Bobby left the channel. Brian and J-Fred tried to continue, but they either ran out of ideas or they lost the passion for it. I could tell in the last couple of games that the drive was gone. So they ended Team Edge to pursue their own things.
My company Sandwich made the Playdate commercial and were we being cheeky and self-aware when we called it high-res? Maybe! Yes of course we were duh. Also that’s our post-production creative person Jenny who narrates and says Maybe! and in the 3 or 4 years since this commercial came out, we have never stopped dropping Maybe! into most conversations. Love the video! You’re great. Keep being you.
Dude. I love that ad. It's so creative and fun. I'm just poking at it and having my own fun. But seriously I watched that ad like 10 times. Props to you guys! For real though, if I ever launch a product, hiring you guys.
OK, a little clarity here regarding him thinking "DACs" are useless. DACs are everywhere. There is a DAC (digital analog converter) in your phone, your computer, your game console, everywhere that audio is coming in digital form.
So believe it or not there is actually a DAC in every pair of bluetooth headphones as well as your sound card. It is literally how the 1s and 0s gets turned into that sweet earcandy you and I are listening to every time we play music or watch a youtube video
Yep. And that DAC can actually be used with streaming services, but it loses portability (and Spotify doesn't have great quality, the highest mode on it is pretty comparable to MP3 320kbps, compared to Tidal which is much better in that regard), just connect it to the PC via USB and use it as an USB DAC. There are also other Bluetooth DACs out there (but iPhone is not really the greatest for it since it only supports AAC codec, and AAC is lossy afaik).
Even more, my understanding is everything that plays music files have a DAC somewhere in them, as headphones don’t work with a digital signal, the pivotal pulses must be converted to a continuous signal for the drivers to function
@@sonicfannin6701And it doesn't even have to be a clean, hi-res DAC for even the most discriminating ear (or even oscilloscope) to have clean sine output. It's amazing what audiophiles will pay for.
For anyone who doesn't know, the importance of a DAC is the quality of the conversion of the audio. Anything digital (PC, phone, MP3 player, your car, etc) has a DAC in order to play music, as the DAC is what turns the binary 1's and 0's into listenable audio. The better the DAC, the better the recreation of the analogue audio. A higher quality DAC has lower distortion, better signal-to-noise ratio, better dynamic range, and lets you get more out of your music. That said, the price-to-performance ratio gets steep, so while having a dedicated DAC can be a great thing, you don't need to break your budget unless you're an audiophile with a large wallet.
It's also good to add that the DAC alone won't make your music sound good. You also need high quality sound files, amplifier, cables for the analogue part, and speakers. The quality to price ratio really jumps off a cliff when you get past a certain price point, and that's before you stop to consider how good your hearing even is.
Also, I feel like he didn't try very hard to find normal music on HD Tracks. My dad and I have bought a bunch of music from there, and they have a lot of classics. Just by filtering by 96/24 in the rock section, I saw David Bowie, Deep Purple, KISS, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Jethro Tull, and SEVERAL Bon Jovi albums.
Also the DPSL2 is a DAP not a DAC. DAP is just a digital audio player, aka MP3 player. This term is used since they play a lot more formats besides MP3 only. The main advantages of a DAP vs a smartphone could be higher quality components for audio and lover quality everywhere else usually (screens, processor, software). You also regain a few things like a headphone jack and an amp that can run reasonable headphones and IEMs (in ear monitors/earbuds). My favorite feature is getting rid of the phone with all the notifications and other distractions when I just want to listen to some music, since you can use a reasonable Bluetooth or usb DAC connected to most phones to get the same audio hardware benefits of a DAP with all the extras that come with a phone (good and bad). That said $2200 is kinda silly. Something from Sony, Hiby, Fiio, Cayin, or a bunch of other manufacturers in the $100 - $1000 range is fine. And really the wide range is mainly for things like brand or if you want a less compromised everything else experience on the player since most run modified android with some changes on the backend to allow for more audio options then stock has. I use a Shanling M3x (around $200) for my DAP when I want to disconnect from my phone and a Fiio BTR5 (about $100) to allow my phone to connect to my wired IEMs when I want better audio then my Bluetooth buds but I need to be more attentive to my phone. There are cheaper options that get probably get really close to what I use and more expensive options that are slightly better.
Even the crappiest DAC's these days are so good that so-called professional "ears" can't tell the difference between them. The low bitrate ones are almost exclusively used for sensor or position encoding functions where less data is actually preferable. There's no incentive to substitute those into audio designs because the cost is the same. Like, 12¢/unit on a bulk tape reel. You can pay an awful lot for higher resolution DAC's but, in double-blind tests, nobody could tell the difference.
"Little Brother" Is a play on "Big Brother", in Chinese this is in reference to someone who is a "big shot" or a "big boss" (typically with mafia connotations). Back in the 80's the "Big Brothers" carried around the brick phones, hence the association with the status symbol
I was just gonna say that you’re only saying that because he’s your husband but then I realized you’re right. Not that I love him or anything but you know what I mean
The disappointing thing about all these retro gadgets is that they're either completely useless or could be built yourself for so much cheaper. $3,000 walkman with lcd? buy a cheap mp3 player and stick it into a custom walkman style case. Want an antique smart TV? just make a fancy wood box to put it in (which is basically what they did for an extremely high price).
You... need a DAC. They're not gimmicks, they're in every digital device you own that plays sound. You can't listen to digital music, it has to be converted to analog in order to be played
Yeah I was about to post something similar. The drivers in your headphones are analog. Every headphone has analog drivers. It's literally how they work.
The fact he did not already understand this made me chuckle. There is no such thing as a digital speaker, at some point a thing has to convert the 1's and 0's to a sine wave to feed a driver, and that thing is a DAC. They can be higher or lower quality, but it is what it is. P.S. Dude also looked like he was also outsmarted for a full minute by a paint can. XD
im so glad dope or nope is back!!!!! such a banger video. even though i loved the dynamic of three people in a room just reviewing products (how it felt super improvised and laid back) i'm actually really digging this semi-scripted format. it plays to matt's strengths!!
I have the Playdate. I feel similarly. I've never really got into the crank as a mechanism and probably would have preferred another button or two instead. The lack of back/front light is inconvenient, especially at night. But it's a fun device to play quick games on and it feels well designed. It's hard to recommend it as a $200 to everyone, but I think a certain audience would appreciate it.
An app for your TV that emulated it would be cool. When you aren't using the TV it randomly displays stuff. Also that way you could adjust the volume on the clunk clunking.
@@1978garfield There are a number of "dashboard" apps you can get for your smart TV that display whatever information you want on it when you aren't using it as a TV. couldn't name any off the top of my head but search for "tv dashboard"
Minor suggestion, have a background for the dope or nope, or an outline, if the font is white, it can be hard to see depending on the surroundings, such as the first phone being a nope, kind of hard to see. So glad you’re back though, and I enjoy these new style of videos! I like the length
Just so you know, everything that has a speaker (or a mic for that matter; they're just speakers in reverse) has a dac. Whether it be in the headphone jack on your computer, or inside your airpods, somewhere down the line that digital signal needs to be converted to analog. You can't *hear* binary, it needs to be more than just on or off. But we can use binary to represent a voltage that can be sent out to the speaker and heard.
@@icebergmm *pushes up glasses even further* ADC = analog-to-digital converter; a DAC in reverse I know what you mean tho lol Also, fun fact: ADC's are used in cameras to convert light into digital signals
I had a typewriter like that in high school, and I thought it was crazy-awesome 😂. My several-paged essays turned into 1 sheet overnight, and I remember treating that 1 page like it was made of glass until it was handed in 🤣.
Listen up. I‘ve been watching dope or nope since its been just Matthias, I appreciated all the changes and I loved the most recent trio. But this style, this modern minimal style of the set and Matthias himself? It is flawless. It feels professional and like Matthias finally arrived at a point in dope or nope that truly feels like himself. I hope with this feeling more natural, we can look forward to many more Dope or Nope videos! Keep on rocking!
37:12 made me laugh so hard that I made that weird sound ( of having large scale issues with asthma without having asthma) that only happens when it’s legit hilarious! 👏 your comical timing is definitely spot on 👌😂
Hey all! Thanks for all your comments about the DAC, yall are correct, any digital device that allows you to hear things has a DAC. The point I was trying to make (that I didn't make well) was Not all DACs are created equal and have various other attributes that make the cost different including amplification. Yes, the headphones did indeed probably do the heavy lifting, I didn't test them on the iPhone because my intent was to test a common pairing. Again, could have communicated that better. Thanks for watching and thanks for watching that closely too! You guys rock.
I don't know how I've missed it but this is the first DoN video I've ever seen and man it's impressive. It's like a very wealthy dad just decided to make cool YT vids one day. Obviously the prod quality and content shows experience but I wouldn't have guessed 13 years and 1098 videos. Very cool (and funny!) and as a middle aged big kid myself I approve, especially of your gadget wall, man that is sick. 😎👍👌
Your land line phone has an input if you go to 31:49 on your video, the input is there next to your right thumb (big knuckle). You plug it in and the cord slips under the tab in that groove to hold it in place and shoot the chord out the side. Give it a go!
I love how this channel went from super bright neon colors. Just filming a few guys be idiots with random toys and products to black and white. More serious tech reviews With super high quality editing. Super big change but not a bad one. Two different styles done really well
4:45 I still listen to your songs to this day, I love "Backwards" especially! And within the context of this video it somehow makes me feel even more emotional
I still listen to it so much nowadays also! It brings back the memories of how Matt started his youtube journey by winning internet icon 😭 its just such a great song!
The video has been out for ten days, I just now got a notification and watched it. Gotta say, I LOVE the more laid back vibe this has versus the more loud or frenetic energy the older videos used to give. I actually feel interested in the content versus annoyed I’m not a twelve year old and the videos target audience. Definitely feels like a solid revamp
I knew Matt couldnt stay away forever! Love seeing you again every now and then, just make sure you dont spread yourself thin and have fun man! So happy to have you back!
Audiophile equipment already makes me angry because you pay 10x the price to get 10% higher quality. But what really makes me angry is when a novelty company asks for audiophile prices. That Walkman cost MORE than a FIIO M17. Something that’s already accepted as the best DAP under $2K and can drive nearly any headphones without compromise. Plus, it’s running on Android with a snapdragon processor. So it works with your favorite music apps.
Thank you for coming back Matt! You were my comfort channel, everytime I was down your videos made me happy and after you first stopped over a year ago I was worried that I won’t see my comfort vids anymore but your back now and I’ve never been sooo happy again to see my comfort videos come back to life
Holy s**t I haven't seen you in actual years!!! It's been so long ever since I was watching Team Edge YEARS ago and here we are today, you sound and look so different!! You along with the others were a staple in my life and I'm so happy to see you again after so long. Glad to see you again and see how good the channel is running! ♥♥♥
as a 34 year old i enjoyed this video very much here is my comment to help the algorithms! that vesta board looks and sounds crazy but kinda is the coolest thing here lol
Thank you so much for also being in my adulthood, Matthias! As a kid, I watched your videos every time I came home from school. Your videos brought me such joy combined with a sense of security and it still continues to do so! I can't begin to explain how long I've waited for a video, thank you so much for being here for me again! I'm going through a tough time and you showing up again proves that everything will be alright!
Matthias, I am LOVING this new format. The vibe is so chill and casual but you’re bringing back that old RU-vid feel that makes my little zillenial heart crave that good nostalgia injection. We are so glad you’re back!
i cant explain HOW NOSTALGIC IT IS TO BE BACK TO DOPE OR NOPE this was my favorite channel ever when i was younger and im loving every second of this new feel
I’m so glad I decided to watch this video tonight. I’m feeling a little sad…my roommates that I love dearly & are now family, moved out into their own place this evening and I’m feeling a little bit alone and this video is making me laugh so thank you. I’m now a subscriber.
Hey Matt. I’m late to this video. But I just wanted to say. Thanks for being apart of my childhood. I had some rough days as a kid. And you always made me laugh when I felt like I couldn’t. Thanks for the effort you put into these videos.
I am absolutely loving this new format of dope or nope! It's so clean and crisp without losing the vibes of the original show. This is amazing growth, man!
I watched like a third of this video thinking "this guy look JUST like Matthias" and I can't describe the joy in my heart when I finally looked at the channel I was watching and saw that YOU'RE BACK!!!!!!!
I missed you. This new format may take a bit longer to get used to but i will still support. Hopefully we'll get a few of the older, comedic videos with cameos from your team from time to time. Glad you're back though.
My son laughed so often during this video, I had to rewind at least twice for each product just to hear what you said at times. We are so glad that you are back!
19:18 It's technically called a 'DAP' or 'Digital Audio Player' as a DAC is what ALL your devices (smartphone, PC, laptop, etc) have to convert digital audio into a signal that can be heard on a speaker/headphones.
this video was long at first sight, but actually it fell anything but long, he just knows what he's doing, and this is the kind of things I want to see on youtube, I subscribed instantly
Just to clarify here. Everything you use will have a DAC in it, bluetooth headphones, your laptop, your phone etc. There's no such thing as "digital music" because it all some how needs to reach an analog source. However in the studio and audiophile world High Quality DACS are a selling feature because not all DACS are created equally. Darko has a really interesting video on this and I recommend you watching it.
@@jinz0 all sound is technically analogue, the creation is irrelevant, the process of a speaker, headphone or voice is an analogue process and regardless of what you’re listening to or creating with it has to have a DAC or you’d just hear code. 👍
the corded phone is for old people that wants too keep touch with family and is very hung up in what they know. My granmother had to use a modern corded phone that just used a simcard to keep in touch with family. That phone looks awesome for old folks, they can facetime granchildren and everything. For those who are thinking "just use a phone", nah bro, old people dont work like that over here.
ive watched these videos for such a long time, matthias' content was practically my whole childhood. i havent revisited this channel in 4+ years til now .. and wow is all i have to say,, it feels so much more mature now. no matter how iconic the old trio was, im enjoying seeing how much dope or nope has evolved. super happy to see it back :)
ive been watching team flip since 2017, i took a break for a long time and then poof, you showed up and remined me of all the times i watched dope or nope, all of the cool flips and challenges that you guys did on team edge. i watched you guys with my mom man! i miss you guys.
Okay, I honestly love this new style of reviewing. It’s just so nice, calm, and feels so professional while still having your chaotic charm to it. I don’t mind it only being 6 to 12 videos a year :)
100% i would buy a vestaboard if it was a fraction of the size and price. let me get a small 2 foot wide one to put beside my desk so i can remind myself when my next therapy appointment is, since it changes monthly, and i'm sold. also, Edge of Tomorrow was amazing. i love that movie.
all the studio layout changes Dope or Nope has gone through have been awesome. i love how well put together & nicely balanced the background always is, whether it’s just him or the crew.
I was really skeptical opening this video, and as much as I miss Tanner and the old way they did things on DoN I can say I watched the entire video and very much enjoyed it. Please keep making videos like this, we missed you Matt!
I’m glad that Matthias brought back another DOPE OR NOPE video again & had Sam and Bryan featured in it for a little bit too, glad to see them again 🥰🥰🥰
Happy that you and dope or nope are back. The video was an amazing video. I’ll miss the trio but I’m still excited for more videos. Continue making great videos just like this video. Keep up the good work man❤
I honestly was really happy to see this pop up on my feed. It’s been so long since I’ve seen a dope or nope video. It also brings a little sadness for some reason because it’s nothing like it used to be and just doesn’t feel the same at all. Video is still good and I enjoyed it very much. The new layout is great and can’t wait for what’s to come. I just miss everyone together joking around and feeling like I was sitting there goofing off with friends
