Join me for a very enjoyable day at the Retro Rides Gathering, Shelsley Walsh filmed on the 22nd August. Modified cars, stock cars and many vehicles with engines you might not expect! Such vehicles include a Fiat X1/9 with Honda power and a Commer camper packing a very unexpected turbo lump! Many thanks to the Young Retro Motor Club for letting me park up with them. You can find them at yrmc.co.uk as well as Facebook etc.

"Reeks of poverty" right in earshot of the owner, brilliant!

Was that the Mk 2 Escort if I remember rightly? Strangely enough, I dreamt of driving exactly one of those (yes, poverty spec!) in light blue just a few months ago, and actually LIKING its "basicness". I think what I _really_ appreciated, is that as someone who was very poor growing up, being able to go out *in a car* was really special, rather than waiting for a bus. This car gave me something of value to appreciate. I think my mother had actually bought it and was sat in the passenger seat - I felt very thankful that she'd (somehow) been able to afford it. A *real* investment.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first time at this event. The car of the day that I was really impressed with was the white Honda City Turbo near where betty was parked with the appropriate Honda commuter bike in the boot. So many great cars and there. Definitely will book tickets for next year.

Wow! Literally dribbling at the variety on offer at this meeting! So many 'ordinary' cars that used to be everywhere and now are exceedingly rare, the Renault 19 convertible for example. Liked the reference to the Frontera too, a diesel version of which ranks amongst the worst cars I have ever driven (perhaps of that period 🤔)! Great video 👍.

That Buick was a '61. I had a white '61 LeSabre convertible years ago. It was a garage find. It had been sitting for years. I drove it around for about 3 years and sold to a guy that restored it. That Dynaflow transmission is un-nerving. It never shifts and never needs to. Growing up in America in the 70's you could find all sorts of cheap convertibles. I always enjoy these car show videos. Love the '60's Cortinas and that little peanut too! Keep up the good work!

Wow, what a large event. You really have entertaining and relaxed car events in the UK, large and diverse and still not that crowded so, as we say in NL, you can walk over the heads. The unusual square headlamps on the Golf in the beginning are the same as on the US market version, perhaps someone retrofitted them?
@craigmclean8260
@craigmclean8260 3 года назад
We did have the round headlamp'ed Rabbit/Golf here in the States, ca. 1975-78 models; the square headlamps appeared in the Pennsylvania-assembled models from 1979 thru '82, IIRC.

Never had that model in Australia, only the Viva sedan before the HB was launched with a Holden identity. Perhaps Holden thought it would cannibalise sales from the full-size panel vans. Ford was prepared to offer the Escort vans in RWD generations that were sold here.

What a fantastic event, very impressed with the variety of classic vehicles there. But sadly, I have still yet to spot a 1984 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 GLS. I am beginning to think that none have survived. Such an advanced car for it's time - compared to a lot of the other cars available in the UK at the time.
