Retro Route 112 Tram Drivers View - D2 Combino 5017 Sunday Afternoon

English - Welcome to another tram upload from Schony747. The route was filmed 7 years ago , so it's filmed in HD Mpeg and not the usual Full HD 4K. Apologies in advance for the dirty windscreen in parts.
This is a tram drivers view of route 112 from West Preston to St Kilda via St Georges Road, Brunswick St Fitzroy, Collins St City, Casino, Clarendon St South Melbourne, Albert Park, Middle Park through to St Kilda.
This run was in a Combino D2 tram. Southbank Tram Depot still had a full fleet of 5 car D2 Combino trams as the newly anticipated Bombardier E Class tram was still under development. On weekends with spare capacity, it wasn't unusual to see D2 trams running on route 112. At 18:25 you will see D2 tram 5007 running towards West Preston.
In July 2014, the route was split up to form the 11 and 12. The 11 ran from West Preston to Victoria Harbour similar to it's fomer City terminus in Collins St and the 12 ran from St Kilda to Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre (IKEA). Both were split to cater for the anticipated demand increase with more apartment buildings being built.
No titles on the video but the usual driver announcements. There is a timing guide to the streets and suburbs the tram runs through which is listed below.
00:00 - 0635 -West Preston Gilbert Road & Miller Street
06:35 - 19:05 - St Georges Road Thornbury, Northcote
19:05 - 31:00 - Brunswick St Fitzroy, St Vincents Plaza
31:00 - 44:50 - City, Collins St, Souther Cross Station
44:50 - 55:10 - Casino, Clarendon St South Melbourne
55:10 to end - Albert Park, Middle Park, St Kilda Fitzroy St

I'm so glad I came across your videos..they are so relaxing to watch before I go to sleep..best way to unwind after a long day..I was watching another of your videos of the no.5 on Wattletree Rd.. I used to take that then onto the no. 69 along Glenferrie Rd to school..so good to see from the driver's perspective 💖

Yes West Preston and St Georges Road still has a bit if character with the Californian Bungalow type houses.

Hi Schony! Just wanted to let you know that there are some great places to get trainspotting photos at a bridge accessible at the southern end of Belair St. in Kensington. It’s just before Kensington station and Kensington siding. Also the crossing at the Royal Children’s Hospital. It’s a great way to see route 57, 58 & 59.

Which route? 10, 11 or 12 and which depot?

It was mostly route 11 from West Preston from Regent st to Collins st and at night through to Fitzroy st. On no. 12. I worked from the Preston depot

It's helpful for passengers to have the driver accessible to give directions, and not be locked away in a cabin. (Maybe not so helpful for the driver.) An interesting trip. The first part was new to me, but then I could almost name some of the streets. (Not bad for someone who has never been to Australia!)

Not bad at all Bob! As I tell people a drivers role is to get people from A to B in one piece. Customer service is an optional extra when it is safe to do so.

5:50 is that track a little wonky, was the tram swaying a little? As I was worried that it might one day fly off while going round the corner, even if slowing down. Did they upgrade that section? Or does it still swaying like that? I haven't been on a tram for months, so I don't know if they're usually like that. And I don't think I have been on that part before

There's no chance the tram would have come off. D2 due to the fixed bogey can move about due to the track

Yes. Both terminus at each end are still in use

Can you become Geoff Marshall 2.0 and give us a progress reports on the subway construction in the CBD? This trip on my way home to the USA I was able to arrange an unofficial ten hour stopover enough time to use the 901 and the craigieburn line to and from the cbd. I had four hours to walk and use transport in the cbd. I ve traveler all over the world , now three trip to Melbourne and their might be better cities , countries with better public transit than mel but none are more user friendly to regular user and to the visitor than Melbourne!, NONE!

Melbourne has a pretty good public transport system. It certainly has it's issues as our population grows and like all cities, the further out you get, the less public transport there is. I'm a big fan of Geoffs channel as well!
