While playing EVERY edition since '81, this edition easily maintains the fun of play and campaigning. And this book (available in pdf) is all you need. Superior performance to other editions.

I am playing the Moldvay Rules with one of my groups, and they love it. None of them really played D&D before so I thought that this would be a good introduction for them, and they are having a lot of fun! Im taking them through "In search of the unknown" I'm so glad that this version exists ^_^

I still think the War Machine rules were the best for mass combat. Loved "Red Arrow, Black Shield." Wrote a sequel of sorts where the Master's sidekick, Alrethus, seeks revenge by raising an ancient mummy from Nithia in the Hollow World using an artifact. The party has to confront the mummy in his tomb in Nithia.
@Wolfogre
@Wolfogre 5 лет назад
The War Machine rules are fairly easy to use in later d20-related games in my opinion. It takes some minor tweaking but that's about it really, due to the effective use of abrstaction in the system. :)

In the last couple of years I've managed to pick up the black "New Easy to Master" boxed set (I'd had it in middle school/high school and replaced it) and the three expansion boxed sets (The Dragon's Den, The Goblin's Lair, and The Haunted Tower) which I've begun playing through with my kids. So far we're halfway through the adventure in the Black Box, and they're really enjoying it. A local used bookstore has put a huge amount of used old D&D and AD&D stuff for sale at good prices, and I managed to snatch the Red Box set (without the box, but the books are in fantastic shape) for the kids so they'll have their own rule books. They also had those older three ring binder punched Basic and Expert books, which I'll be keeping to read myself. They had nine or ten old modules as well. I actually found a couple of products I'd had and enjoyed in my high school years - the First Quest and Karameikos: Kingdom of Adventure CD-based sets - and will probably move them into those at some point.

As I said in the comment section of the previous video (Retro review 10, Basic D&D) I have been playing D&D since 83. Yes Basic D&D has the whole class is race thing going but, as you point out, with all the supplements & the way the rules are structured, the character classes available are more than either AD&D or AD&D 2nd Ed. offer. Also Thanx to things like Dragon Mag. Dungeon Mag, Adventure Quest & other such supplements we have in our "Retro rules sessions" as they have came to be called the Gnome Fighter, Gnome Thief, Gnome Shaman & Gnome Wokan. The Halfling Thief, Halfling Cleric & Halfling Druid. The Elven Archer/magic User, & Elvern Thief/Magic user. Thanx to Sages scroll we have the Druid & Paladin starting at lever 1. We also have the Ranger, Bard & Barbarian. We also have the Rakasta & Dark Hin or Darkling. there are also a number of classes & races added in with the supplements the Gazetteers, the Crucibles & the Hollow World, which you mention. There are a few of us that run the "Retro rules sessions" at all of the gaming stores here, the one comic store and at events at said business along with each of us running smaller sessions & campaigns at our houses. All have more than enough ready & willing players. The D&D Basic system gave you basic character classes & races to start with but anyone who plays the system & knows the system understands that the system is designed to allow so much diversity. I honestly think most who are critical of it never got far enough into it to realize that :)

The skill rules and thief skills are the only weak parts of this game. I just pulled this skill system out and I put in a variation of the one from either Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperboria, or Star Without Numbers (or a hybrid of them). If I do use the thief skills (rather than replacing that system) I just say thieves only roll for exceptional circumstances, but the auto pass baseline attempts. Because the thief skills are awful for many levels. If you converted them to normal skills thieves would be dreadful at them, and when there are equivalent skills everyone does better. Otherwise this is my favorite form of classic D&D. Though I do love some of the 2E settings as well (looking at you Ravenloft, come on over Darksun).

With the ongoing bloating of 5e, I looked into this edition a couple years ago, got the Print on Demand, liked it so much I bought Hard cover copies for each of my players. Ive gotten a couple games in with it and its pretty fun, in the words of my players, its more "Story telling" based then ROLL playing based.

I bought quite a few books for 3rd-3.5rd edition, a couple of 4th, and I'm planning on buying the 5th. However, this book ... was the only version of D&D I actually played. Like, a lot. Sure, the published adventures were little more than dungeon crawlers with minimal role-playing, and I was a kid back then ... but I loved it. Good memories with me and my big brother, and a couple of friends now and then too.

Thank you, this was very useful. I'm currently planning on starting old school dungeon crawl campaign, and I've been wondering about the different rule sets to use. I have been thinking of using the Old-School Essentials, which is a remake of the old Basic and Expert sets, but Rules Cyclopedia certainly sounds like a worth while consideration, especially when we get the game going and folks familiar with the system. I know this is an old video, but I'll be going to your channel now to see if you got more goodness there, maybe even some help on deciding what modules to start with :)

With the Rulescyclopedia being back in Print On Demand along with the some of Gazetteers decided to take the plunge with Mystara and the known world. Thank you for your detailed three part guide. Particularly enjoyed about your own hombrewed ideas. The books I've decided plump for: Rules Cyclopedia , Dragon Inn, The Monster Compendium book. Hollow World , Northern Reaches and The Two Empires box As a sucker for printed books I hope more Gazetteers get re-released . It's great these classic books are getting reissued.box I hope Wrath Of The Immortals gets reprinted. Looking forward to taking a group into Mystara. I bought the Rules Cyclopedia back in the day after playing a bit with the black box and then with a xerox copy of the older red box. I felt they were increasingly better in comparison to one another, the Rules Cyclopedia being the ultimate book, we didn't need anything else. However, I feel that the basic box sets had some introductory adventures that the Rules Cyclopedia could have had. Or maybe they could have had those in a separate adventure book. But maybe the Cyclopedia was a book intended for those who were already familiar with the game and just wanted all of the basic box sets rules in a single volume.

This wasn't my first rulebook (I'd played B/X and AD&D), but it was the first one I ever purchased with my own money. That makes paging through it today a real nostalgia trip. Still, I don't find myself actually wanting to use most of it these days. Just glancing at those weapon mastery, war machine, and magic item creation formulas makes my eyes glaze over. By the time I pare it down to the essentials, I find myself effectively back at B/X again. So I just use that. ;)

In my opinion, this book is everything you could ever need or want out of Dungeons and Dragons. I've been liking it more and more and pretty much run it as is! With some tweaks to thieves skills however, as they're stretched to go up to 36th level and I think that hinders more than hurts, personally. In which case, I use the original Basic and Expert sets for reference. Really well made and informative video! I enjoy watching and coming back to it here and there.

Was a little disappointed you didn't mention TSR 1070 anywhere. 'New Easy to Master' Dungeons & Dragons. It came out before the Cyclopaedia, which is why the book is TSR 1071. I'm teaching myself D&D with the 1070 boxset.
@captcorajus

That was the 'new' basic set, meant to replace the BECMI sets after the release of the rules cyclopedia. I probably, at some point will do a video on that set, as well as the companion sets, Dragons Den, Haunted tower, and Goblin Lair.

The best book D&D has ever released. Still have my copy and will never get rid of it just a note on skills, Do you even realize that using a d20 and rolling less than the skill is just the same as using a percentile system Also Weapon Mastery IMO was what brought the balance to fighter classes that made them the equal of magic casters at higher levels
@waltwhitmanleaves
@waltwhitmanleaves 4 года назад
It’s a great book The only thing it’s missing is in the tables about classes it does not give the name of the class at each level Example fighter at levels is called Warrior And name changes as you gain another level In the basic and expert rules they give names to each level

Labyrinth Lord is not based on the Rules Cyclopedia, it's based on the Moldvay and Cook sets. (And if I'm allowed to be really nit-picky: Dark Dungeons is based on the RC *and* Wrath of the Immortals. It also looks to the BECMI sets for rule-clarifications and errata.)
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 8 лет назад
+Painocus you can be as nit picky as you like my friend. You are, however, incorrect. The Rules Cyclopedia is simply a compilation of the BECMI sets.
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 8 лет назад
+Painocus Dark Dungeons gets its cue from BECMI as well, and since the Rules Cyclopedia is just a compilation of BECMI, the same holds true just as for Labyrinth Lord.
@Painocus
@Painocus 8 лет назад
captcorajus: From what I can gather (although I haven't compered them side-by-side) Labyrinth Lord is based on (as I said) the Moldvay-Cook B/X-sets. They have some mechanical differences from the BECMI. B/X have faster advancement on saving throws, class abilities and spells, only goes to level 14 (although LL extends this to level 20), didn't have Read Magic for Magic-Users, lacked all the new stuff from the later BECMI books and probably more differences that I can't remember on the fly. The rules in Wrath of the Immortals (which is what Dark Dungeons bases it's Immortals rules on) are also quite different from the ones in Mentzer's Immortals-set. Different system for how magic is prepared, no limits on Immortals per tier, tiers being based on levels rather than winning competitions, Immortals actually having levels, Immortals' powers being reliant on their worshipers and a lot of other smaller differences. The RC itself also had a few changes compared to BECM, but they were all quite minor and I can't recall what they were right now.
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 8 лет назад
+Painocus If you notice in my review, I used the word 'Emulate', which means, in form and presentation, they were copying the feel of old school games. I didn't say they were the same game. I personally feel that RC is very good. I've looked over LL and DD rather extensively, and find some of their changes interesting, and some questionable. The differences between Moldvay and Mentzer are nominal, but I think you got most of them. I think if you put RC, LL, and DD next to each other, looked at the rules set, a reasonable person can conclude that LL and DD take their cues from RC. Wrath of the Immortals was a continuation of RC. Considering the shear amount of 3 column information that's presented in the RC, its understandable why they choose to make the immortals rules a separate project. Moldvay stops at level 3 (and Cook's Expert set continues that to 14). Mentzer's "BECMI" continues on and on.Moldvay states that clerics get their spells from gods. Mentzer gets all "wishy-washy"* about this aspect of the game and only says clerics get spells from "their beliefs."Moldvay's magic-users get one spell at 1st level and have to find more in play. Mentzer's get one spell plus Read Magic at 1st level, and then one new one at every level.The monster list changes between these versions. A number of people "monsters" are combined into the Human entry: acolyte, medium, trader, veteran. Insect swarm and noble are moved to the Expert rules. Some monsters are renamed: cave locust became locust, giant; driver ant became ant, giant; and killer bee became bee, giant.Mentzer slows down the advancement of saving throws, thieves' abilities, and spell acquisition for clerics and magic-users.Castle-building rules are more detailed in Moldvay, but Mentzer details a base town and talks about running town adventures.
@Painocus
@Painocus 8 лет назад
captcorajus: Well I was under the impression that Labyrinth Lord is intended to emulate the Moldvay and Cook's sets specifically. Are you saying that it is actually closer to the RC (but with lower level-caps and content removed)?

Easy and straight forward, I remember blasting through the character creation in one afternoon, and rolling up a rather mediocre cleric. One thing I liked from these rules was that your main attribute level granted an XP bonus of 0, 5 or 10% depending on how high it was.

That single rules compendium would perforce violate Gary Gygax's edicts regarding player access to DM information. At the least, it would prevent the DM from compartmentalizing such information they deemed "eyes only." A small problem, especially if the members of the gaming group took turns behind the DM's screen, but a problem nonetheless. ='[.]'=

Let us know when you're done translating the immortal box set mechanics for dd 5 ! Even if it's only the request for immortality

A different and "extinct" species of Dungeons & Dragons (as far as print is concerned) but this lends it all the exoticism of a dinosaur in the movie JURASSIC PARK. A beautiful, beautiful dinosaur, and it still burns in the hearts of many. The book with the tiny print was well organized and had everything to progress your character from a 1st-level that could die of a paper-cut until your high-level character could dispatch armies and eat continents for breakfast! However, if after all these decades you want to argue errata, here are some unofficial suggestions to perfect your game. This is a 9-page Adobe file: www.acaeum.com/library/cyclopedia_errata.pdf

I have Basic 2e set & expansions to Immortal. I don't have any need for this Rules set. If I want to play a game with skills done properly or more comprehensive rule set I'll play a Chaosium or FGU RPG. What attracts me to Basic 2e is simplicity & elegance of rules set. When D&D tries to be some other game it ceases to be D&D.

This is an odd question to ask and I certainly do hope you respond, but how would you go about the Thief's Searching for Traps ability, or how would you treat it differently compared to how in Basic, it's described as a 1 in 6 for everyone willing to search for traps in a specific area?
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 6 лет назад
I guess what you're asking me is, how do you rectify the fact that everyone else gets a 1 in 6 chance to search, but a thief rolls percentiles instead? If that's what you're asking, then the easiest solution would be to convert it to a percentile roll, and give everyone a 17% (rounding up) chance of success.
@Sonicracer100
@Sonicracer100 6 лет назад
I phrased the question quite odd, but I mean how to treat the Thief's abilities when it seems worse than the others for finding traps up until 3rd level despite it being the Thief's specialty?

It was my personal holy grail when it was released and years after. However, after playing since fall of 1986…I’ve never seen, witnessed, heard of, or taken part of in any way a campaign wherein characters went higher than around about level 7-10. Even B/X’s scale of 14 is too high….but 36!?!?!???? Cmon! 🙄 It’s why I’ve used games like WhiteBox: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game with a scale of ten levels. Then thieves, especially, aren’t made worse even more so (like BEMCI/RC). It’s a nice work. However, it really is just far too much. The levels are stretched too far to be of any use at all and to the detriment of PC (again, especially thieves, who are already in a bad way from the get-go, as opposed to other characters and their specialties). It’s far too verbose as well. Monster and spell descriptions are too long, too specific and boring!

I'd love to see Mystara converted to 5E. Unfortunately I don't think that's likely. It seems all the new adventures are all in the Sword Coast. I've been told Princess of the Apocalypse was basically Temple of Elemental Evil. Didn't ToEE happen in Grayhawk? If Greyhawk isn't getting it's due then Mystara doesn't have a chance of seeing an updated reprint.

The Cyclopedia contained numerous unforgivable errors, obvious to my eyes at the time. For a book that was a simple distillation of existing rulebooks that was unforgivable, and these were not corrected, as far as I am aware. The main problem with BECMI/Cyclopedia is that the character creation system does not allow enough difference between characters. Even contemporary AD&D had clerical domains and wizardly schools to specialise in, familiars, and multiclassing/dualclassing. Nostalgia has some value, but in my opinion 3rd edition released BECMI and AD&D from the stranglehold of TSR and their refusal to rid the game of bad rules merely because Gary Gygax or some other ego monster employed there wrote that particular rule. BECMI was great for its time but time has moved on.
