As a follow-up to my previous Apple iPod Classic Teardown video, we continue by opening up the tiny internal Toshiba 30GB hard drive. We find out it only uses one-side as there is a single head, and the platter is made of glass (not aluminum, used more in desktop hard drives). Today I think it would be cheaper, smaller and more shock-resistant to use memory chips but back in 2007 the cheapest way to get 30 GB of storage was with a hard drive. People have since upgraded their iPods by installing flash memory replacements, giving the iPod Classic some value as a collectable.

If you use a 1mm flathead bit you can wedge it in between the lobes and turn them, at least on a 4th gen 20gb drive. Flatheads defeat more security screws than you might think

I wonder if you could take the zif connector from an old ipod hdd and transplant it on a Toshiba 320 gb 1.8 inch drive?

Good video, very informative. I hope all was good after you god that ceramic glitter all over your fingers. I've had my hand shredded by a glass platter before, but ceramic is even worse.

Wiha 26794 Precision Pentalobe Screwdriver Set will allow you to open up those screws

I used some generic noname, there are lots of cheap options available online, both hex, torx and pentalobe, even some that handle "security screws" (the ones with little pins in the middle).
