To kick things off for Retro Week here on GMBN Tech we managed to track down a Nukeproof Reactor from 1997. Doddy takes a look at all the retro tech featured on it and makes some comparisons with his modern day Nukeproof Scout to see how far we’ve come!
Subscribe: gmbn.tech/subscribetogmbntech
The GMBN Shop: gmbn.tech/iI
The Reactor has a linkage fork, an insanely long stem and narrow bars, 26 inch wheels, carbon shell Nukeproof hubs, and a full Shimano XTR groupset.
What do you think of the reactor?🤔

What do you think of this retro bike?
@alcopower5710
@alcopower5710 5 лет назад
GMBN Tech .......cool bike. While I agree that new bikes way outperform vintage bikes.....one cool aspect about older bikes is that most had their own personality. Twenty some plus years ago manufacturers weren't afraid to try new ideas and most bikes looked (for better or worse) way different. You have to agree that today's bikes look very similar. What I would like to see is a retro frame built up with modern components and have a proper ride to evaluate just the frame compared to modern frames. The new frames would still be loads better but modern components would help close the gap a little. When I have seen the videos comparing the two it's always the fork or the brakes or the narrow bars etc holding the frame back. Just my 2 cents

Nuke Proof was originally in Ada, Michigan, East of Grand Rapids. I was partially sponsored by them back in the day, like 94ish. Those hubs were dope, but bad a bad rep of shearing the carbon hub shells from the flanges. THe first set of custom wheels that I ever hand built as a bike shop employee were Nuke Proof carbon hubs, WheelSmith spokes, Mavic 517 ceramic rims, and Salsa rasta color Flip-offs quick release levers. Dope!!. NP, made a Ti hardtail frame for just a year or two I believe. My buddy had it and it was cool, but the bottom bracket shell was flexy as hell. Cool vid!!

Those hubs 'looked' pretty cool, but as a machinist and carbon fabricator for aerospace, I knew much better. I knew they'd fail just like you said. Can't beat free and sponsored kit though! Most fancy hubs still use cheap, off the shelf bearings to this day! Sorry to say it but most carbon bikes aren't that great either. I know it and I've seen it on dozens of big name frames. I was also an inspector. The bike industry can't afford to do it right. Neither would we buy them if they did. I saw a Chris King rear hub disassembled and bought it on the spot in 1994. 1st time I had ever laid eyes on one! I thought, now this is what I'd build. My kind of quality! There's a reason they're so pricey! I still ride that same hub on the very same and original bearings! Still as smooth as new. Nobody else makes their own bearings! I still use ceramic rims and XTR v brakes too! The best for rim brakes! Rode it on 60 miles of trail yesterday! Now I have 7 more CK wheels, all bought used.

Love the linkage fork. I am in the middle of taking an old VooDoo Bokor frame from circa 1999 and rebuilding it with modern tech: 120mm fork, dropper post, 760mm risee bar with 50mm stem, tubeless tires, disc brakes, 1 x 9 drivetrain, flat pedals. Still 26" wheels, but the fork is for a 27.5" wheel, so that plus the other extra travel slackens the geometry a bit.

When I started riding a mtb back in the late 1980's I always wanted a Bridgestone MB-1. I loved the lugged frames as well as the component packages that Bridgestone put on their bikes. Of course they were nowhere near as bling as the Klein Attitude, which I drooled over extensively! Would love to see you showcase some bikes from this era!

Really enjoying these retro week episodes. That Nuke Proof Reactor is super cool. I have a Bridgestone MB4 that I bought new in 1992 that I still ride several times a week as my commuter bike. Some of the components are original, such as the Shimano LX cranks, hubs, and a Bontrager stem. Other parts have been upgraded over the years. for almost 20 years I had a Rock Shox Mag 21 on it. Sadly I was unable to find anyone who could still rebuild it on a reasonable budget. It now has the stock rigid fork reinstalled. The stock SRAM indexed thumb shifters and Avid brake levers were replaced with the same XTR kit as is on this Reactor, as were the brakes and derailleurs. Everything still works buttery smooth. I still take it out on my local trails a couple times a year as well though most of of my trail riding is now done on a much more modern Stumpjumper FSR.

I have a Nukeproof bike at home, made in the last year before they went belly up. It is clear coated oversize aluminum and the custom CNC machined part that connects the seat and chain stays is a real work of art. That is amazing. Nuke proof was Ferrari level stuff far above my high school pay grade. I remember drooling over that bike and only saw one in the wild at a race in North Jersey. Dart was my go to front tire! I just retired my 95 Voodoo and cannot believe how amazing the bikes are right now. Just bought a full suspension carbon bike and switching back and fourth is a trip. I had the XT version of those parallelogram brakes. Yes, they were more powerful but with Kool-stop pads they created an infernal howl. It was really a deafening screech, for which I had to stop using them. I also have to say that they were more powerful than necessary in the way I was using them, with cantilever levers and the Kool-stop pads. Regular v-brakes in that configuration were really vary satisfactory and noise-free. I stayed off disc brakes for a long time because of how good this setup was, more powerful than the existing disk brake options at the time in fact. The cantilever levers pull less cable, thus generating more pulling force, and the kool-stop pads were simply the best (and probably still are).
@DilbertMuc

Had the same experience. The very first XT model (M739 in 1996) was silent, but the small levers broke the inner casing due too much stress. I tried the newer parallelogram models M750 and M750. In the back they are silent, but on my Rock Shox fork they howl like a freight train. Tried everything, brake booster, different pads. No chance. Then I discovered that my old fork was ISO2000 compatible and I bought a modern hydraulic disc brake just for the front. A revelation in brake power and silence.

Same XT V-brakes and with stock pads, (what ever they are called), but I did not have that problem until I tried a ceramic rim. It was a noise I was not willing to get used to, but I bet it would scare the heck out of your buddy in front of you when jamming into a corner. :) it was Loooooud.

What a cool bike, I really like it. I use to have set of the smoke tires, panracer also had the Timbuktu’s they were amazing tires, those were on the Nishiki Kodiak that I own in the late 80’s early 90’s . It had one feature on the shifters that you didn’t see on too many other bikes. The shifter could switch from click shifting to friction shifting, so if your shifting messed up you could switch too friction and still be able to shift. Also because of the curve in the front fork I think it was a fairly slack head angle for its time. And oval chainrings( all three). I would love to see a retro video on some of the fully ridged mtb that were out in the late 80’s. There were some good bikes out. My Kodiak I was taking off of 3’ and 4’ drops, and riding some of the early North Shore trails.

Yea, the guy who designed and built the first one, (Scott Roerig. not a part of Nuke Proof. Still a friend of mine), now makes all the gas tanks and fenders for Indian Motorcycles. So if you see one,---you have made a connection the Indian owners know nothing about. :)

Back in the same period I had a Gt Tequesta, but I dreamed of the rock lobster or salsa frame. If you find one please share on the channel!

There were some bikes that came out that really turned heads, and that was one of them. I interviewed for Cannondale back in 2000 when they were trying to make motocross bikes, but I turned down the offer, (not enough money for the move). Glad I did. The Motorcycle division was shut down about 6 months later. Bummer.

Oddly, my 93' Fischer Big Sur has turned out to be my go to bike for everything. Set up as a 26x27.5 mullet. The geneseis geometry worked out well with the new school front end somehow, slackened things up perfectly. New school biz up front and full old school party out back. Did the same with a Kona Explosiff, Schwinn Sweet Spot, and a KHS Team. Keep the old bikes on the dirt!

Those xtr brakes worked great but the linkages always developed rattle so I used to tie them with an elastic band . Some great kit there though and I'm loving that fork reminds me of the Girvin and AMP forks back then but in way better by Integrating the shock into the headtube. Bit like a headshox and an amp combined.

Cool bike. Interesting fork, and that DW just now doing linkage fork, similar but with links at wheel end. Saw a Cannondale headshok bike (f600 I think, in blue) from 90's on Saturday in Bath...dont tell Martyn!

Cool bike...I have a Marin Rocky Ridge 1994 in 20,5" with a Rock Shox Mag 21 SL Ti Long Travel fork. I tuned the compression valve and the rebound plate according to Rock Shox tuning manual instructions. . Second bike is an Indian Fire Trail 1995 in 19" with a Marzocchi XC 600 fork. I love those nineties Marin Aluminum bikes with a massive oversized downtube frame. 🚲🐗😎
