Squidmar Miniatures I’ll the there with my PayPal account at the ready. I started painting (again) recently after watching Guy and Penny’s “speed painting Blackstone fortress” videos and bought some fairly “affordable“ artificial brushes. They work but of course they’ve started to curl which was one of the things that would cause me to give up on painting because it’s *SO* frustrating. I’m looking forward to some good quality brushes. 👍🏻

Afraid I've got to correct you there, Guy. The Zoats indeed used to hit on 4s while shooting, but melee combat was calculated differently. You used to roll dice equal to your attacks, add your weapon skill to your highest die, add for criticals (extra 6s), take one away for fumbles (ones), and reroll any parries. Once you and your opponent have done so, whoever had the highest total would score an amount of hits equal to the difference in their two combat scores. Needless to say, it's much simpler today.

Turns out I've had a Zoat for almost 20 years. Never knew what it was until now, I wasn't even sure it was a GW mini. The top half lives as the combi-bolter on a particularly daemonic looking Chaos Vindicator tank and the bottom half currently resides as part of a Chaos Spawn. So all is good in the world. (???)

As a 51 year old (yes penny some of us are THAT old!) i find it funny watching you youngsters deal with metal miniatures like its an unknown substance. Wasn't that long ago that all mini's were metal lol. Oh, and GW stopped using lead in their metal around the time they moved to slotta bases (that was about 1983 ish, and yes there were times when metal figures didn't come with plastic glue o slabs that pass for bases - shock horror of the ancients!) Here's a tip for pinning models... don't use brass rod, its expensive if you do a lot. Your average steel paper clip form your employers stationery cupboard is FREE... and all you need is a 0.8mm drill bit for your pin vice. Best painting i've seen you done, really hate the figures, but your paint is great. thanks for sharing. More from penny!

Brandlin Solidarity from another “gray beard” (not unlike the silverback gorilla) - I just hit 55 and fondly remember cleaning, pinning, and painting my solid lead Zoats. I had a couple of them back when they first came out but sadly lost track of them over the past 30+ (!!!) years. Full agreement on using paper clips over brass rod - it’s a lot stronger and cheaper. 👍🏻

The old way i used to grass base the models was the usual pva and sand, when it was dry use green ink on the sand, this runs and fills the material quite nice so you don`t have to use a lot. Then when that is dry you drybrush the sand with bilious green a very yellow green, this looks surprisingly like grass.

Got a set of four painted Zoats as an Xmas Present in 1989. Did use to do ink washes mainly for Chaos as even if its a complete mess you can claim that's what was intended!

Great retro paintjob, loved the edition 2 unboxing a while back, really took me back. I started out on edition 1 with my mate and a handful of miniatures back when we were kids and have loved the world of 40k ever since, I've still got a load of the old metal miniatures and some Mk6 marines still on their sprues that need painting, maybe I'll get back into it with a little help from your tutorials lol. I saw just how many unpainted minis you have but if you would like any old minis let me know, for free of course, I've got a tech-marine on a jet bike that's pretty cool and it would be nice to see somebody do it justice as I would probably end up leaving it in its box for the next 20 years again =)
