@joensuu123
@joensuu123 3 года назад
I guess I'm so far from the 'scene' that I wasn't aware that the painting fashion had evolved so much. The newer miniature is clearly technically more detailed, the movement is far more realistic and well proportioned, but it lacks some of the charm and character of the older cast. I'd opt for the modern model here myself (but then for me far to many of the modern GW finecast minis are far too stylised and uncustomisable (no more over the top jumping dwarves supported only by their beards etc!). Regarding the paintjob - the grimdark scheme is far better on base, clothing and weapon - but the 90's look works much better for skin tone. The newer model looks like it's a zombie in skin colour.

@Lonewolfpackleader
@Lonewolfpackleader 3 года назад
If you wanna cheat with Tyranids a little, base them white, Tamia gloss for the shell and then a heavy wash over the whole thing in whatever primary colour you want and they can look fairly decent for minimal time, the crevices from their exoskeletons make the wash pool enough that it sorta highlights itself Doesn't look as good as spending actual time on them and doing proper shading and highlighting but it's enough to get a passable swarm on the table
@Lamefoureyes
@Lamefoureyes 3 года назад
I'm part way through painting my hive fleet and the genestealer video was so useful! Using the 1:1 mix of matte medium and water + drop of dish soap to thin paints allowed me to add brightness to everything after doing the bulk of the shading with washes
@rq_itami9945
@rq_itami9945 3 года назад
If you want some ideas for Grim Dark you should google Third Eye Nuke Tyranids. Sadly their site was taken down, but youll still be able to find some pictures. Besides that Grim Dark Schemes tend to be really desaturated and focus on a rather small pallet of colours. Try working with a lot of washes to get variety into colours and more drybrushing then layering. Grim Dark means that you try to capture the dark and gritty reality of the world, so using a lot of dirt, blood and slime is usually the way to go. Also Grim Dark painters often tend to use oil and enemal Washes instead of acrylics but those are a bit harder to handle and I wouldnt suggest that to beginners.

Honestly that retro style speed paint was really good for a first pass, and really looks in place with the rest of the old line. Tip for yellows I've found recently, though not sure if it works with the old Citadels / Coat de Arms, base the area in white, follow up with a bone color, then put on the yellow. I'm doing this with my current space marine army, and while it's a bit tedious to do, it definitely helps with vibrant yellows.
