Awesome. There's one, extremely major, update in RR 2 that was left out, kind sir: the player is allowed to attack the motorcycle police. This was a pivot point in gaming history.
I think EA and Activision are the biggest assholes in the gaming industry but they still hit gold with some games. Its such a shame dlc is the new meta these days, and developers have excuses to sell the game half-finished now. Ubisoft ruined their reputation quite recently too. People also believe Rockstar are terrible, but I'm gonna just say Rockstar and Valve still remain the good guys, with Epic Games also skadoodling about if you haven't tried the new Unreal Tournament you should give it a go its free and nostalgic.
+minigunexo And SEGA, with their ham-handed handling of Sonic. And Capcom, for forgetting Mega Man existed. And Konami for...fuck, being Konami. The only real publisher holding ANY sort of positive ground is Nintendo, and they're all a bit behind the times and slow to catch up. To say the least.
The real reason I prefer Sega over Nintendo is that they gave the PC platform some love with some really great game ports (anyone remember virtua tennis and crazy taxi? aside from sa1 and heroes), the dreamcast might have been a flop in sales but sega still lives on and that's what I love about them. And now were getting Lost World on the PC while it was supposed to be exclusive for wii u pee? hah While Nintendo is all about exclusivity, too bad m8 we have emulators for everything now. and super mario galaxy in 1080p looks much better than it was on that weak wii! Microsoft is also trying to paint themselves as the good guys, windows 10 being free is sadly the most shady move ever, solitare having paid dlc for an os? that's mad, can't turn off windows update? enjoy your bsods and frequent restarts. They also pushed in some fake updates for windows 7 if you do a little bit of research that shit will force you to install windows 10 when its a huge downgrade from 7 that's incredible. Capcom I really can't say much there, aside from being total dicks to mega man when Nintendo did more justice to that character than they ever did, hey at least we have street fighter 4 and 5 on pc its something eh eh? wrong dlc up the ass
I love the first Road Rash so much. Road Rash 2 and the "next gen" Road Rash are also great, but there's something about the first that makes it a classic.
I'll admit Road Rash was a bit before my era, but its influences live on. A rather good game inspired by Road Rash is called Road Redemption. Even though I wasn't around for the progenitor to motorcycle combat, I can say for certain the homage its spawned is every bit of good chaotic fun.
P.E NO.1 was a real pain in my ass throughout my childhood years. The satisfaction of stealing a chain off her and then using said chain to dismount her from her cycle was satisfying beyond words.
I do realize that these are re-uploads, but the timing seems perfect seeing as the Oliver Twins (aka the guys who coded the Dizzy games) have just recently released Wonderland Dizzy, an old game made in 1993 that never saw the light of day until just a few days ago. They found plans for a game they half-remembered coding a long time ago laying around in their storage, and some time later they discovered a floppy disk with a nearly finished version of the game. Some fan-driven compiling ensued, and voila, Wonderland Dizzy is online and completely free to play from inside your web browser right now. Bloody great coincidence on the timings!
The split screen on 2 responsible for many onscreen battles with my brothers that usually turned to an off screen battle. The good old days of Sega making consoles. Had to go through at least 5 or 6 changes and I even had the Sega channel. Technology way ahead of it's time!
I remember playing this on my uncle's PC back in the 90's. I remember not really playing it right, since I liked to run around off the bike and explore.
Oh man, by the same guys who made MotoRacer for PC. I LOVED that game as a kid. I played it since I was like 2 or 3 with my granddad. It had beautiful graphics full of color and it was great. Of course it lacked the combat mechanics of Road Rash.
I had Jailbreak as a kid and god damn I loved that game. Was surprised to see people didn't care for it, it was great fun and seemed to do everything the originals did, but better
Man, I remember playing Road Rash: Jailbreak to death. It was my GTA 3 before GTA 3 was cool. I love running to and past the finish line after being thrown off my motorcycle.
You should think about taking on a RetroAhoy for the Final Fantasy series. It's an old, well-rooted set of games that I'd personally love to hear more about :)
I already know what Road Rash is, so this video ended up being entirely useless... not that anything I could have learned would've been useful, but heck, with seven minutes it'd be nice for there to be more content than I could get from playing the game for one race.
funny you should mention gta4 the lost and damned. there's a mission where you race on motorcycles while holding bats and Jonny whill say "let's give them road rash!".
It's weird that Road Rash 3d was missed out on this list, as it was VERY similar to RoadRash 64, (I think it even had the same soundtrack), but it's much more grounded. In 64 you could get weapons like inflatable bananas and ridiculous stuff, but 3d was more... grounded I guess, and didn't have quite so many weapons. Jailbreak was like, the direct sequel, with its own soundtrack. The 3dO version though had ports on PS1, PC and Saturn apparently. It was good stuff even despite the GODAWFUL midi music on the PC/Windows version for the races, and the earbleeding motorbike noises lmao.
No mention of Road Redemption? If anyone's looking for a modern Road Rash game, Redemption is in early access on steam right now and has a lost of positive reviews.
+V for Vegeta I got it a while back, and to be honest it just doesn't feel like the original Road Rash. But I do hope that changes over time, as they develop it more.

But yeah, I played it some long time ago now, and even in its early state, it was doing a good job of keeping the Road Rash spirit alive and well. I should play it again soon, see what's updated since I last played it.

The Playstation 1 had three Road Rash releases. The one that was ported from the 3DO and Jailbreak as you mentioned, but between those releases, Road Rash 3D was released.
3D was better then the ones before it in the next generation arguably. Terrible it wasn't mentioned and also no mention of the actual soundtrack that was given on the North American release on Sega with Soundgarden, etc.
+Paz It isn't there because no doubt he thought Road Rash on the 3DO and Road Rash 3D were the same game, without looking it up it seems as they are different games entirely. That along with misleading information on the web that lists them as the same game too.
Ahoy's beautiful yet simple style should be studied by content creators everywhere. This video is over 6yrs old at this point but still feels fresh as a warm loaf of bread. The animations we get from current AHOY vids are missing but their absence doesn't *feel* like it's hurting the video in any way. Obviously the older videos are different in that way but they don't feel like they are worse or lower quality. As an AHOY fanboy I can watch these back catalog entries without feeling like I'm watching an older lower quality product. Take heed creators, this is one of the best examples of how to succeed here on RU-vid.
That licensed soundtrack from the psone port first introduced me to soundgarden... And today they are still my favourite band! Has games influenced your musical or otherwise tastes?
I spent so many hours playing this on the 3DO while my toddler slept and baby didn't. Often my baby would only sleep if nestled in the crook of my arm, so pillows went under, the volume was turned low enough to let her sleep, and she conked out while I raced. Kept me sane during some lengthy nights of colic.
I never grew up with the game, but found a couple of copies of Road Rash 2 at my local pawn shop and never thought much about them, and finally bought them in 2018 after getting a Genesis for the first time and I couldn't believe how fun it was for a game as old as I am. Proof they still are fun even today.
The bikes in Burnout Paradise are the closest we're going to get to the ideal Road Rash game. Such good fun. Also looking forward to Dizzy, I just hope you're reviewing the games that are on the ZX Spectrum and talk about the differences on each hardware platform.

Nonuv Urbeeznus The bikes are kind of a bonus added to the game (you don't see any NPC bikes) and considering I never went online playing Burnout Paradise I have no idea what's it like to face other bikers. It's been a while since I played the game but I don't recall and button commands to do physical attacks.
aah, I remember back then when I played road rash in Nappa valley. I almost reach the finish line, only to get thrown away to kingdom come from my bike by a passing car. After finally reach my bike, a police were waiting for me there. Such is life in road rash. 10/10 would play again.
People on this comment section really don't seem to know the PSone Road Rash 3D (Not the 3DO port), which is a shame, I've grew up playing all of them and RR3D is probably my favorite in the whole series
Skitchin was a spiritual sequel of sorts, featuring people on rollerblades rather than on bikes. one of the mechanics was about holding on to cars to be faster than your opponents and eventually flinging yourself ahead
Great game! but along Road Rash, there was a least successful but still fun game with the same mechanics, Skitchin'. Not only is fun, is hard and the soundtrack was amazing. Love to see a video for that game in particular.
+XxDEDEYExX guess what! ahoy showed off mach rider, a game that was on the nes, but here is the twist, sega was competing with nintendo , advertizing there blast prosessing, but the nes showed that it could be faster then the genisis , an example being mach rider. thus sega was lying about blast prossesing
I don't think the 3DO version was a full 3d one. It keeps the pseudo 3d road but with a most beautiful road texture. the road of the Need for speed 3DO version was also in pseudo 3d.
Wonder why you didn't mention the Sega Saturn when you mentioned the other platforms that got a Road Rash, the Sega Saturn was a port of the 3DO version and runs super smoothly. A gem I'll never sell. Just wondering... No biggie.
I liked very much your retro games videos. (Specialy the video for my loved Quake). I think the next retro game that you should to dedicate a video is the Command and Conquer Saga.
I remember playing these when I was a kid. I really sucked at it, but it was fun. It was also back when EA was actually a good game company, not the scumbags they are today.
