[RETRODEATH] - MAX PAYNE 1 PC GAME REVIEW (2001) - The Matrix meets... John Wick?

The best way to describe this game to anyone in the current year is definitely "The Matrix meets John Wick" but with more action, a grittier, darker (and better ;D) story, and no Keeanu Reeves. And replace John Wick's dog with Max's family. Sam Lake is still cool tho right?
Max Payne is an awesome game. You should go play it. You should also watch Hardboiled.

Great watch Retrodeath ✊🏼, i recently had the opportunity to play the Payne series back to back, and Max Payne 1 had a significant lasting impact on me compared to its follow ups. That opening simulation of losing your loved ones just feet away.. being reminded of this throughout the campaign, and then the traumetising, symbolic dream scene being thrown at you from left field.. It was easy to remain immersed, and empathise with Max's motivation for revenge to complete it in one playthrough, despite its toughness.

Given that John Wick hadn’t come out yet, John Woo might be more accurate for your title, as they cited him as an influence, but that’s up to you. It might help me you avoid other pedantic comments like this one XD Anyway, I can’t wait to watch this!!! Your videos are always so in-depth.

Great games. Played the shit out of 1 and 2. Shame that 3 was hit and miss.

I think 3 was pretty good too overall, at least with the gameplay. My main issue IIRC was it being way too cutscene heavy and some things being out of place compared to the other two games. I played very very little of it around the time it came out so I definitely need to revisit it.

I really only like this Max Payne, it was so gritty and the main character was badass with nothing to lose. 2nd one he became a drug addict and broken heart loser, the gameplay was good, but he wasn't cool like the first. Bought the third and never played it, not sure it's worthwhile.

I really like the 2nd game too, but I agree. Always preferred this one much more. Story didn't have that special grit to it, but the gameplay was still great overall. 3 is cool too, but haven't played it for a while as I said in another comment. Similar issues to 2 with some weird out of place things with the story, and way too many cutscenes.

Still the best Max Payne game to date. MP2 was already different. Didn't play as well as the first one. And MP3... that was in name and bullet time only. It was an entirely different game from an entirely different franchise. Looks, Gameplay, nothing was Max Payne anymore. How to ruin a franchise.
