I think this is a beautiful short film. I recently lost my dog and related a lot to the film, you truly captured how it feels to see things that belonged to a loved one that is now gone.

0:48 is my favorite shot in this film. I can't quite articulate why, but it has so much life and soul in those 5 seconds. Great production design. I like the fact that this is simple and all "show; don't tell."

Losing a loved one is one the hardest things we as humans can face. We take for granted the existence of the ones we hold dearest. We realize that our beloved no longer roam this earth. We get a strange feeling of loneliness and emptiness. So I encourage you friends, spend every second you can with the people you love. Because in the blink of an eye, that person may be gone. -Nate

This is by far the best film you have produced. All visual storytelling. Every shot had a purpose, and every choice had emotion. The Shot at 1:47 is a great subtle visual touch. The choice for shooting on film was an added bonus too.

Wow! I really enjoyed this one a lot. I like how you left some of it open for interpretation, this could mean so many different things to so many different types of people. And the fact that this is shot on film makes it even more beautiful. Also, I saw the dust/background noise as a metaphor for what its like in her head at that moment. After she wakes up the dust is clear and the background noise is much softer, possibly indicating shes more content with what happened. But that's just my opinion :) Excellent video Simon!

It's kind of funny that you can see when you took which shot because of the dust on the left hand side. Thought at first that this is a stylistical approach to destinguish the past (flashbacks) from the now. (Less gray, less dust could stand for the past and many dust particles could stand for the pain and sadness in the now) But as it turned out it wasn't really intentional.

Sam Valentine acting felt more than a bit robotic and unnatural, and camera placement felt very functional. Not sure what to think, because Simon thinks about this stuff.
@samvalentine9243
@samvalentine9243 6 лет назад
Alec T I agree about the acting. "Functional" is probably the best thing anyone could say about camera. The way he placed the camera in the room was weird to me from a cinematographer's perspective, but I don't think it's jarring enough for the average person to notice. Though there is definitely a missing shot from her POV looking at the empty kitchen area before the flashback. The way it is now we just have to assume it's the same space. Really there just wasn't enough coverage and I don't think the camera was used to help tell the story, instead it was just there to capture the image. Nothing wrong with that really, I just would have expected more given that this seems to be an exercise in visual storytelling.

I’ve been experimenting with 16mm film using a Bolex H16 reflex. This looks much nicer than my results. I had a lot of noise from under exposure and the digitizing process. My speed was also a bit fast in some shots. It’s hard to believe this is also a wind up camera. Good job!

Nice footage. I bought one of these K3 cams brand new back in 1987 and shot one roll of film. A client who saw the K3 sitting on my desk whipped out 15 crisp hundred dollar bills and asked of I'd sell it right then, on the condition I load the first reel for him and teach him to do it. How could I resist?

Your emulsion is getting scratched and accumulating on the right side of the frame. Improper S16 mods will do that. Some folks use carnauba wax on the gate to prevent that, and it works, but it's kind of crazy.

Is that dust originally from the camera or did you add it later? If it´s from camera, couldn´t you crop it? What about the burn at 0:51? They look "good in a bad way" but I´m not sure I´d leave them (the burn looks great, the dust doesn´t). I mean...shooting on film sure is "nostalgic", but I guess people will thing film looks worse than digital (when it shouldn´t, if you light it correctly).

For some reason those first shots on a tripod I feel like I sense that there is a camera and there is a person behind the camera that set up the shot and is watching it now, and it takes me out a bit. But there is no such feeling when there is some camera movement, no matter how little.
@samvalentine9243
@samvalentine9243 6 лет назад
Andrey Kim good point. I think the placement has a lot to with that as well. I'm wondering why we didn't start from the sweater's POV when she entered the room. There doesn't seem to be any reason for the camera to be where it is in the first 10 secs or so.

Foley off at 1:47 on clinking glasses; then reverb/delay of spoon dropped into glass is distractingly too long for the visual.
@goldengargoyle1579
@goldengargoyle1579 6 лет назад
meowma I noticed that too. Maybe it adds to the retro style of the cinematography, things a little quirky and out of place makes the short look more of a older classic film. Also the Foley being slightly out of place in areas could reflect on the story on how the girl's emotion is a bit out of place. Sort of thing. Martin Scorsese did this for 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. When you watch it you might think that it was poorly edited every now and then but Scorsese did this on purpose, to try imitate the feelings of drug use.

Gabriel Silveira Quality doesn't matter if the content is amazing. In this case, it's true. In my opinion, 360p gives it a retro look that simply adds a feeling of nostalgia to the film. I just like it more that way. If you think 1080p looks better, go for it. Whatever floats your boat man. ^_^
