My name is Jake and I overhaul and repair instant cameras! Want your camera upgraded like you see here? Then message me through the links below!
In this episode, demonstrate how to create a variant of my PolaVolt battery adapter solution, that uses a Retrospekt 'tripod adapter' as the battery holder.
For the full video on the PolaVolt, check here:

Video on how to wire up the PolaVolt
• The Cheapest (And Best...
Parts list:
- your SX-70!
- 1x Retrospekt 'tripod adapter'
- 2x AAA sized '10440' 3.7V lithium ion batteries
- 1x MH-MINI-360 buck converter
- good quality solder and soldering iron
- kapton tape
- automotive body moulding tape
- 1x 3.7V lithium ion battery charger
Optional:
- 1x 0805 size SMD resistor around 45K to 47K in value (outputting 6.05 to 6.2V respectively on buck converters using a MP2307 chip. Note that bucks based on other chips may need different resistor values, and if you are unsure you should ALWAYS check the output voltage before finishing wiring it up)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like all battery adapters on the market, it has it's pros and cons, but the price is right!
Pros:
- basically half the price of the standard AAA battery adapter
- better power delivery
- simple design, with no built in charging circuitry to fail, all charging happens externally
- hard cell battery design means batteries are user-replaceable and field-replaceable
- automatic darkslide eject is disabled
- cheap!
Cons:
- does add a substantial amount of bulk to the bottom
- kinda ugly? But also not really. Its very neat for what it is
- not really the kind of thing the average user can install, but easy for a technician like me to do while I'm overhauling the camera anyway
Overall the design is very repairable, with all electrical components mounted outside the camera.
44mm-length, AAA size '10440' lithium cells are available cheaply online, and cost around $10AUD for two. Chargers are also available for around $15AUD

Hi there Jake, as you know, I've tried a lot of the alternate power products for the SX-70. The powerbar, powerbar-s, the retro spect and your PolaVolt. I've also seen a friend who bought the mint offering. He's still waiting for them, mint, to answer his calls and emails as far as I'm aware, as it, the camera, didn't work on arrival. I am desperately looking forward to get away from 600 film. I hoping for consistent quality from I-Type film. Thanks for your efforts with improved battery life and cost of ownership.

I type and 600 are the same film they are just in a different box, one has a battery and one doesnt

Excellent alternative to the original Polavolt battery option. Very well presented. Clear and straightforward and it helps to have watched the previous episode showing the soldering of the internals. What would be your preference now. The Retrospekt tripod adaptor base or the small black battery box beside the film counter at the back as per your original design ? Can I confirm that either way you could not only shoot I-type film but also 600 film ? The 600 film just not using the film battery but the Polavolt battery.

I'll be doing a proper comparison video of itype solutions when I'm back from holiday Definitely within the month I'll be comparing: - the PolaVolt - my own iType solution - the PolaPack by Retrospekt - the Rezivot 'Power Ranger's - the Polastudio battery adapter - the Powerbar by Chromatic Parts As well as commenting on "hack" methods

@@theinstantcameraguy Not sure if the Mint iType is one listed there, but it’s got an extended guppy belly type thing, so not adding to length, and still aesthetically consistent What amazes me, is the number of hot rod SX 70 mods there are !?! Thanks for the great videos.
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 2 месяца назад
@@charleyfolkes I won't be reviewing the Mint option. It's only available on their pre-built cameras, and I can't purchase it to install for clients. So I don't really consider it an option. It's basically the same as the polastudio back though, with a slightly different shape

@@theinstantcameraguy Ahh yes, you’re totally right on that. My friend sent his ‘Time Machine’ modded SX 70 back in for that ..

Great mod. When using 2 LiFePO4 batteries you wouldn't even need any electronics inside.
@theinstantcameraguy

2x 3.2 = 6.4 6.4V is at the very upper limit of what Polaroid list as a safe voltage for the SX-70 I won't be recommending that for clients
@OutdoorsIQ
@OutdoorsIQ 2 месяца назад
Could definitely resolve this with a linear regulator. May as well get a pre-fab USB-C charging board too… would be a great little solution. Perhaps a V2?😊
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 2 месяца назад
@@OutdoorsIQ I've already solved the voltage issue with the dc-dc converter (the small green PCB). Using raw LiFePO4 is not something I want to do, and the buck converter I have ensures voltage is guaranteed to be in safe spec so no further regulation is required I did think about a USB C charging board... It's certainly possible. But the cost of adding such a thing in terms of labour (neatly adapting the plastic, installing the board, soldering it up) is likely more than just simply purchasing an external charger for $10usd Maybe I'm old school... But I don't mind external chargers. Easy to replace if they fail, and very fast at charging

Hi Jake, I found your contents are always so interesting! I'm designing my personal version of the external battery enclosure and I found that the 4 screws in the bottom aren't M2. Do you know what type of screws I have to use? Thank you in advance for your help and for your contents

Nice video. I’m curious, with your modification to using the hinge switch would it still be possible to use a 600 pack of film and its battery. What would be the process for that? Just take out the batteries from the Polavolt when using 600 film?
@Agraxian
@Agraxian 2 месяца назад
the terminals that touch the 600 battery pack are cut off from the rest of the camera during modification, so you won't have to worry about somehow overcharging it. I've been using the rest of my 600 film on my polavolt mod and it works exactly as if it were I-type ✌️
@chadhauze1683
@chadhauze1683 2 месяца назад
@@Agraxian thanks for the info. So after the mod, it is no longer possible to power the camera from the 600 film pack? Just want to make sure I understand.
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 2 месяца назад
I suggest you watch my video on wiring up the PolaVolt. It's long but answers everything. I remove the original battery terminals inside the camera. This is to prevent causing cell discharge from unbalanced batteries and other possible electrical issues. This means it cannot be powered by 600 film anymore - it runs purely off lithium power. It's really a non-issue though. The batteries have a decent capacity. And being a small hard cell design makes it easy to carry spares. Most other lithium solutions have built in batteries that require the whole camera be charged when flat. On mine you can swap the cells and keep shooting. The extra redundancy would be nice, but I prioritise safety and longevity of the cameras electronics first. Additionally, I use the cameras built in hinge switch as on/off to the lithium batteries. If you were to power the camera from 600 film using the terminals after the mod, the cameras shutter PCB would stay powered all the time and stress the chips. Not ideal.

While we're on the subject of batteries and battery replacement as from 2027 all electrical appliances that use battery power and which are to be sold in the EU must have easily replaceable batteries that can be replaced during the life of the product by the consumer. So that means the current range of Polaroid cameras i.e the i-2, Now and Go will have to have easily replaceable batteries when sold in Europe so that would mean any other country they're sold in As it would be pointless and silly to make a different version for other non EU countries. I see there's room for 4 batteries in that tripod adapter/adaptor come battery pack so would it not be better to wire in 4 batteries to give a longer lasting power supply.
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 2 месяца назад
I could wire in extra cells in parallel easy. Or... Just insert two extra cells in the other side and carry them as spares lol Likely the second option is better, since you don't have to worry about unbalanced cells then
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy 2 месяца назад
In regards to the battery EU regulations... We shall see. Nice that I've been so ahead of the curve hey ;) I would love to see hard cell replacements like I use here... But somehow I fear they will find loopholes in the legislation. I believe already that the new law says that batteries of high capacity and efficiency don't need to fall under this category... So smart phones are exempt apparently? Fingers crossed that government regulation changes things though
