I hope someone at Polaroid sees this video, takes note of why you made this video and passes this on to those that are responsible for bringing new cameras to market.

I feel like new Polaroid would be open to this change but with the way they’ve ignored or refused to acknowledge Now+ overexposure I doubt it

If you drill out the corners before you go at the opening with a dremmel the rounded corners can make a nice looking hole.
@theinstantcameraguy

But what if I wanted square corners lol Square corners are much easier to file smooth, and the plate covers the hole anyway

Thank you very much, I really like the work you do. I own a I-2 that I compulsively bought very early after release (maybe now I would think twice), as everybody, I'm concern about the battery dying in a few years. Viewing the iFixit guide I noticed that after step 20 maybe you can have access to the board battery socket, have you considered just abandon the old battery in place and add a surface external battery case mod like you do with de sx-70 model? It would not be as aesthetic as the replacement door, but for a totally nob as me it would simplify the job 😅. Have you considered using an external battery bank connected to the USB-C port? I don't know if the camera can be used while charging but it could be an option as the battery start to fail. By the way the "Polaroid I-2 Battery - Genuine iFixit Kit" is out of stock 🤨....people just panic with their 600 euro camera starting to die 😆.

Everything you suggest is certainly possible. An external battery holder and a hard cell battery would be possible for example, but would likely need a board-management circuit of some kind installed in addition to the battery - for the sake of charging. Unless of course you were planning on disabling the USB-C and using an external charger. There are many ways you could power the camera. I chose a method that was relatively simple. In terms of disassembly, the lens, viewfinder and LIDAR are all very easy to remove. It's taking off the body panels without damage that is the hard part! I mangled the top panel of mine in places trying to get the stupid thing open due to its infuriating use of clips

@@theinstantcameraguy thank you for you answer, I'll follow you "battle" with the I-2, and I hope I will enjoyed it a few years before needing your great tutorial 😅

tbf those connectors are commonplace these days. Most laptops will use them especially on fan connectors. You may have weakened it when trying to remove it the first time because they are normally pretty stout and robust

I'd very much like to make it clear that I don't repair modern laptops Much like the other two comments I got from people who HAD seen these connectors, you miss the point I'm trying to make my point is I'm not hooking up a fan to a computer motherboard, I'm replacing a battery with a pre-existing standard of connector that ISN'T this

1:22 You also see these clips on phone PCB's and computer mainboards. You just click them down onto the socket. They're usually used on ribbon cables.

@theinstantcameraguy Месяц назад
I've never seen this clip used on a computer main board in my life. Maybe inside a modern laptop? A phone I understand, but the clip choice in this case is ridiculous considering the industry standards for consumer LiPo pouches, and considering that all other itype cameras to date use standard JST in some form Just because "they exist" doesn't mean it's a good choice
@Ni5ei
@Ni5ei Месяц назад
Oh I agree. Never seen them used this way either. I was servicing an HP all in one PC last week and in those things I understand why they're using them. There's very little room in these flat computers. But in the case of a battery inside a camera where there's plenty of room it makes no sense.

Hey Jake, a question that I know the answer to is no. This will not do anything to fix the overexposure people are having with this "instant" camera, which so many reviews indicate that only when set to auto mode does this thing, expose the film properly, right? I mean you have removed any graceful exit from this 700 Euro paper weight in 3-5 years, using the reason that the battery is dead and cannot be replaced out cost effectively.
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy Месяц назад
It could be possible for a firmware update to fix the exposure though I'm hopeful they will eventually nail it

This is a completely useless comment and does not serve to help anybody who reads it. Are we supposed to be impressed with you? I'm going to leave your comment up so you can think about your words. Am I supposed to have seen every single plug and socket there is in existence? Just in case Polaroid decided to use it? Maybe it's common in laptops, tablet PC's, and other niche devices but in case you didn't notice... Those devices aren't the point of my channel, nor are my area of expertise. I've never noticed it used in a single other Polaroid camera before, and I've never seen it used to connect a lithium ion battery before. The point of this "great vid" is that all other I-type cameras to date use JST or mini JST connectors, most factory connectors on off-the-shelf replacement batteries are JST connectors and just 1cm away from this 5 pin connector, connecting the motor to the PCB is... a JST connector! There is room inside the camera for another JST connector and legitimately no reason not to use one other than to make replacing the battery slightly more difficult than it needs to be.
