Typically 16th notes. As for note choices, usually it's 1-4 notes, but no hard rules, usually using an octave somewhere. You won't often hear ties, or rests, or slides, but again, no hard rules. You can think about it like an old school metal bassist or guitarist doing a standard 16 note (open, with a couple fretted notes) riff but slower.
