EvanSol919 That's not even close to being true. Lucas has been changing things since 1995. He said that the VHS tapes were the last time we would ever see the original versions. Four years later, in 1999, The Phantom Menace came out. So, we had four years of tinkering before the prequels disappointed us all.
EvanSol919 Well, I don't know how to rectify that part of the situation. It makes no sense to me. It could also be the nitpicky way in which Lucas looks at his own creation.
I didn't mind the Ewoks. The only part that stood out as ridiculous to me is when the Ewoks used 2 logs to to destroy an AT-ST. You'd think they'd be more durable than that.
+ThePrinceOfSaiyajins The mythbusters tested this in real life with two giant logs and an armored truck: It's totally legit...google it, it's some great footage
+ThePrinceOfSaiyajins Actually that's the part that makes the most sense. You got these two giant heavy logs changing their potential energy into kinetic energy of walker crushing death.
+ThePrinceOfSaiyajins You do realize the mass and kinetic power of those logs right? And the Scout Walker are VERY lightly armored. So it's basically a tine can with meat versus two hammers.
I actually think Episode VI has the most interesting story of all the Star Wars movies, it's just that the directing and general flow of the movie was a lot worse than Episode V. The movie was a lot slower and less action packed, but the story was awesome and the scene with the Emperor, Vader and Luke is by far my favorite scene from any Star Wars movie
***** So what? Again, they're the best fucking army in the damn galaxy, they could know how to self-defense against pre-historic weapons like a spear or a small rock, there's no excuse.
+fluffynoses They were the ORIGINAL Jar Jar. Lucas had minimal involvement with 5 and 6, and he only fought for the ewoks so he could sell toys. The Ewoks were the first crack in a dam called 'reasons why george lucas is trash'.
If the ewoks were replaced by wookies it would have made so much more sense, ewoks killing storm troopers? That should have been impossible but wookies they are beasts, they are what you would get if humans and grissily bears had babies, they are badass and could totally take on stormtroopers
+jamie fuller.... I disagree. You have explained exactly why it would be really stupid for the Empire set up a base next to a Wookie Village- too dangerous. Whereas they underestimated the Ewoks due to their size and they used some guerrilla tactics on the Stormtroopers. If Lucus went with Wookies instead of Ewoks, it would also take quite a major re-write to the middle section of the film. The Wookies wouldn't have captured Han and Luke like the Ewoks did because of Chewy. The Ewoks, on the other hand, were about to cook and eat Han Solo and only stopped when Luke levitated C3PO. That was quite a good scene ... but it would need to be replaced with something else more "friendly" that would resemble the dreadful Holiday Special. Did you see the Hoilday Special? - I think it ruined any chance of the Wookies being used for Return of The Jedi.
george lucas wanted storm troopers to be defeated by primitive wokies but chewbacka was seen with techonology so he reversed wokie into eiwok and made them small and furry.
Heitor Mello Personally I like the Ewoks in general ... but I do agree that the Ewoks traps & weapons could have been better & more vicious. Instead of that rocks scene, maybe they could have had trap doors in the ground & with some pet monsters in to attack the stormtroopers... or instead throw in some home made bombs. Also they could have hid in carved out regions of the trees with some bigfuckoff cross bows that pierced a stormtroopers skull!!!
Yesss. You really feel like the whole saga and also the soundtrack has been building up to this moment. I get goosebumps just remembering it. The soundtrack is such a big part of what makes Star Wars epic. I love the prequels soundtrack as well. At least Williams didn't dissapoint. And I'm sure he won't this time.
I don't mind the Ewoks either, but they could have gotten a little less screen time, and seeing storm troopers getting knocked out with little rocks from slingshots really took me out of it.
Rob Robberson you can interpret it as the empire's plan being ruined because they didn't consider the native population of the planet to be any threat. kinda like avatar but with teddy bears
thegreeenbeast In all fairness to the Ewoks, they did take a huge pounding. They only excelled with help from the Rebels and while in large numbers against infantry, and with a whole lot of cleverness against vehicles. If they had been Wookiees instead, the battle would probably be over as soon as Chewbacca gave the first Wookiee growl. Plus, let's not forget key fact #1: they're Stormtroopers. "Entire legion of my best troops" means one is allowed to get a lucky shot on R2, a lucky shot on Leia, and hold Han prisoner for two seconds, and kill two Rebel soldiers and a bunch of Ewoks, because they did kill a bunch of Ewoks. They acknowledged the fact that they weren't as potent in a fight as the Empire. "Short help is better than no help"-Han Solo. And those two lucky, wounding shots were against targets without any cover and they were standing still. Yep, still Stormtroopers. They are only accurate against Sandcrawlers while offscreen. Now, if they were Sand People...
My favorite part of Jedi is the Jabba's Palace sequence. I know it takes too long, and so on. But, remember we had just come from Empire Strikes Back, a movie where the heroes never win once. There is only a small victory at the end when the heroes escape, and it's a hollow victory. But that's it. Now, we get to Jabba's palace, and again, the heroes are already loosing. Leia gets captured and put in a compromising position, Han gets captured again, Luke even gets captured and is without his lightsaber. At this point you're like; "Please, just give them one victory, I don't care how small". And then it happens, R2 launches Luke his new lightsaber, and after a badass action scene, the heroes emerge with a great victory, and one of the most satisfying villain death's in film history. This is the point where you're just cheering, and completely pumped up for the rest of the film, because this was the heroes first victory since blowing up the Death Star in the first film. This is why I love the Jabba sequence, and why it's so important to have.
Overall a good review. But how...could...you...not...mention...the GREATEST SPACE BATTLE OF ALL TIME!?!?!!?!?!?!? That battle is what makes this movie Awsometacular for me! It lets me forget the Ewoks!
Coltallic I heard they couldn't have wookies because they couldn't find enough people like Peter Mayhew that were 7 ft tall but they were able to find people like Warwick Davis that were 3 ft tall so Lucas changed the Wookies to Ewoks. Not because of merchandising, but because of lack of really tall actors.
To me the ghost change "broke my back". It was disrespectful to Sebastian Shaw, it made no sense story wise, and it taints the ending because Anakin from the prequel does not belong in the original trilogy at all. It is a completely ridiculous change that just pisses me off. That and Boba Fett's voice change. Other changes like adding extra CGI scenes and characters, changing lines for no reason, and the "no" part were all ridiculous and annoying, but Boba Fett's voice change and the ghost change feel downright disrespectful.
+LeadMuncher09 The prequels established that Boba is a clone of Jango, which is why Temuera Morrison was brought in to re-record his very few lines. As for the changing of Anakin;s ghost, how does it disrespect Sebastian Shaw? Its not like he performed much in that moment; the bulk of his screen-time was Vader's death scene, and Lucas left that intact.
+LeadMuncher09 more disrispectfull is the fact that the man that wore the suit of vader for the 3 movies David Prowse, shot the same scenes and was betrayed wen Lucas cast Shaw for just those 2 mts
+Goncalo Mendes Good point about the suit actors. It's mostly an annoying change really. It just doesn't make much sense to change the ghosts storywise either.
Well like i said... prowse shot the gost scene..... but shaw was put in his place.... then hayden 20 years after.... just imagine if lucas had digitaly replaced sir alec guiness for ewan macgregor in all the 3 movies... that would be the ultimate shitdump
+Racist Bassist Luke specifically asks about her "real mother", and therein lies the problem now with the prequels. As the second-born, and with no Jedi training, Leia should be the one with no memory of Padme instead of Luke. The fact of the matter is that Lucas originally planned for Padme to survive, but changed it during production to heighten the drama of Vader's rebirth.
rik vulders Except we don't actually know that she was. In fact, maybe this is our news that she wasn't. The fact that she was called Princess and not Queen could just as easily be due to her Alderaan father being alive, even if her Alderaan mother wasn't. Or, maybe politics are a little different on Alderaan - they certainly seem to be on Naboo.
***** but in the first movie she is Princess Leia right? Which implies that at least one of her parents is still alive, and if it was only her dad he would probably tell Leia about her mother
Al Girlme It just irritated me that a girl would feel the need to state that fact as if it was something that came up so often. I feel like you shouldn't have to defend yourself on why you like something because of incidents with others of a similar sex, is what I'm trying to say. I think it's cool that you like it for what it is and not just some other aspects sprinkled around here and there.
Nino Djuras Under a ROS review I read that in the end Luke just got very drunk at the Endor party and had nightmares (the sequels). Dreams actually feel real when we’re in them, right? It’s only when we wake up that we notice something was strange
You know how you said you would have preferred Wookies instead of Ewoks? Well, according to sources I've read, one of the original scripts for Return of the Jedi did have Wookies in them. It would have basically been the same thing, except it would have had the Death Star being built over the Wookie's home planet of Kashyyyk. Though later Lucas said that the Wookies were too advanced and wanted a much more primitive race to fight against the Empire, that's where the Ewoks came in.
favorite part in the entire star wars saga is Vader, after sending Luke to the Emperor and hearing from his son "Than my father is truly dead", he(Vader) stands in the hallway alone and hes is actually contemplating Luke's claim that there is still good within himself. No words needed.
Never had an issue with the Ewoks. Another thing that I think makes ROTJ awesome is the spaceship battle that is just crazy for it's time. Very well done.
I like how everyone puts on their thinking caps when it comes to ROTJ. Everyone always says Ewoks defeating the Stormtroopers is stupid because the Emperor claims they are his best troops. However, in the original film an ENTIRE death star filled with legions of troops cannot catch 3 teenagers, two (extremely suspect) droids and a, very loud, Wookie to escape. People fail to realize the importance of Ewoks in the film. The Ewoks are of diminutive stature, thus deceiving. You underestimate them, but like Yoda said, "Judge me by my size, do you?" They are the wisdom of nature overcoming the technologically superior forces of evil, using the labyrinth of the forest to aid them. Most importantly of all, they parallel the rebels themselves. They prove that no matter how small you are, you can still overcome evil.
Order of Star Wars movies from best to worst (my opinion remember) 1. Star Wars (A New Hope) 2. The Empire Strikes Back 3. Return of the Jedi 4. Revenge of the Sith 5. The Phantom Menace 6. Attack of the Clones
1. Empire Strikes Back 2. Revenge of the Sith 3. Return of the Jedi 4. Star Wars 5. Attack of the Clones 6. The Phantom Menace I'm a Sith at heart obviously.
@@vainokarhos1306 I would consider it to be an A but a lot of people are overrating it. Lots of people think it's the best and I heard one dude say it deserved multiple oscars.
For me, the showdown between Luke, Vader and Emperor is still the best scene in Star Wars history. And that "entire legion of best troops"... The Emperor was referencing their marksmanship: they can actually hit targets.
***** I think Luke was turned away from the dark side by his own actions, not the Emperor's words. When he chopped off Vader's hand, he looks at his own prosthetic hand and realized what he had done. He was becoming Vader. And I also think the scene where he checks his hand and grips it while looking at Vader solidified his belief that there was good in Vader: he saw the similarities between them in that moment. The Emperor was just tossing words out the Sith dictionary for extra effect.
I have never minded the Ewoks. They were originally going to have them be Wookies but that would have looked like the Star Wars holiday special was wedging its way into the final chapter. I would have gotten tired of all that growling. I think it's cool how they took on the empire with sticks and stones, sticks and stones! Not CGI.
Episode 1: c - ( it had a few creative designs and awesome music but overall a bad flim) Episode 2: b- ( I liked obi WANs story with chasing down jango fett and geonsins, but the love dialogue sucks and Haden cristain is really bad In this) Episode 3 B+ (good but the dilouge still sucks and it has a lot of creative planets and Ian mcdreamind is the best actor in this movie) Episode 4 A+ (do I even have to explain why is good?) Episode 5 A++ (again do I even have to explain) Episode 6 A+ (do I have to explain)
The best thing to happen to Star Wars since the release of the original release of Return of the Jedi is for the franchise to be taken OUT of the hands of Lucas.
Red Key True, but i want them to be better in the new trilogi than in the original. Because Luke are just hacking and slashing without any skill and when you have the force you should be able to let it control you.
Red Key I don't mind those faster paced lightsaber battles, as long as they don't looked too choreographed... like that one from the last battle in episode 3, when Anakin and Obi-wan are just spinning the lightsabers around their bodies, when one of them could just easily take a stab at the other and end the fight
Don't know if you'll see this, but there's a great version of the Star Wars movies out there called the "Despecialized Edition." It's made by a bunch of fans to combine all the good new special effects (better looking lightning, not the Anakin replacement) with the original theatrical version. Do some Google searches and watch the original trilogy in its original form.
I in no way support Hayden in Episode 6 as Anakin's force ghost, but I think the reason for it canonically is that by many people (Vader included), Anakin and Vader are two different people. Even Obi-Wan told Luke they were different people in Ep 4. So technically, Anakin died on Mustafar and was Reborn as Vader
+Stenson What? No he would not! Anakin died yes but if you have not noticed, hi's body did not die. I became vader. Hi's soul died. Like you have propably changed as a person from 8 year old when you hit your puberty (if you have).
Even in the concept art for Episode 7, Anakin and Vader are 2 different people in the Force. The new canon is REALLY trying to emphasize they are 2 different people
The Emperor/Vader/Luke confrontation is my favorite scene in the Star Wars franchise. On top of that I like the Ewoks. Return of the Jedi is and always will be my favorite Star Wars movie.
I can only make one good argument for why George Lucas changed the ghost of luke's father to Hayden Christensen, it's because obviously the last time Anakin was a Jedi was when he was younger, since that time Anakin has been a Sith, NOT a Jedi, plus it doesn't really make sense why he's an old guy in his spirit form, the last time you see him before he dies, is a crumbled burnt face that looks like humpty dumpty, so why does he look unscathed or unburned in his ghost form? It doesn't really make sense.
Patrick Ward okay no it makes more sense for him to be his old age, yes he was burnt but why not have his spirit form look like him if he hadnt been burned on mustafar like the originals? And he died on the light side of the force making him a jedi again, isnt jedi just a title? If you become a force ghost you are 100% a jedi.
He was most likely referring to the girls that aren't fans of Star Wars and just watch the movie because someone who was a fan wanted to watch it with them.
***** Sexist means treating women as feminists, loving teddy bears, flowers, cats, etc.... or just treating them like the inferior part of society being weak of will and feeling lost of power when really we're equal to men and are just as strong and hard working!
Mariana Putzeys It's a joke. He didn't mean to insult anyone and he didn't mean to generalize, he just tried to be funny by portraying a stereotypical non-scifi loving girl and I think he succeeded. I honestly don't understand why people are so easily insulted by jokes. I mean no offence, and I don't just mean jokes about women, I just find it fascinating why people are so easily offended by jokes which are obviously not to be taken seriously.
great review ! Concerning Ewoks...well : yes, it's a bit child-ish, and obviously made for merchandising BUT it will always be a thousand times better than f****** gungans in episode 1 anyway ! (and all useless cgi creatures from prequels)...it's also the only Star Wars i remember seeing on a big screen, so, nostalgia you know :) great review !
Personally I feel like one of Lucas' greatest mistakes was having Anakin Skywalker kill children. The whole sequence and scenes of Vader approaching the Temple with the troops and everything were done really well however when it comes to redeeming a character there is a line where there are certain bad things they should not do. Before the prequels I was with everyone else in seeing Darth Vader as redeemed. However Killing Children in the prequels (he does it in both 2 & 3) made Darth Vader in my eyes an unforgivable villain.
savagenature1 I would of rather the clones killed the kids. I mean we have to believe Anakin has some good in him left like Padme said in ep 3 but, I kind of didn't see it at all. To me, after nearly killing his wife which he tried to save by kiling all the jedi and separtists, and killing kids plus siding with Sidous after he chopped of Mace Windu's hand and letting him die, I didn't really see any good in him at all. In ep 6 I saw it more because, well he has a kid and that is the one big thing that Padme left in the world, and what they both had together was luke and leia so, I did end up seeing good in him then. I think he eventually had some good in him once luke came around but before that, fuck no lol
Yo jeremy i am gonna be 15 soon and i and i just wanted to point out to you and all the starwars fans out there that I LOVE THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY even though i saw the prequals first
The firs 30 minutes of the movie, along with the ending are 2 of my favorite star wars moments. The whole Jabba's palace sequence (minus the dance number) is amazing, especially once Luke comes in as a now epic Jedi. Then, there's the RANCOR, the best star wars creature in star wars bar-none. The whole rescue is just awesome to me, and has been since I was a kid. Also, the best moment in the trilogies to me isn't the "I am your father" scene, but Vader's Redemption, again minus the stupid blu-ray changes, but even with it the scene is still absolutely amazing b/c of the redemption. Anyway, ROTJ is my favorite despite flaws b/c as a whole it's just soooo good, and its one of my favorite movies of all time. I know plenty of people would criticize and rave about ESB which I also love, along with the original star wars, but this is the one. Star wars wars goes from 1-6 in terms of worst to best imo.
You're wrong about the Ewoks Jeremy. Get the special edition blue ray set, he talks about the creation of the Ewoks. Endor originally was going to be the home of the Wookies, but due to the popularity of Chewbacca and how he developed as a character who was technologically proficient, he had to come up with another race to use that was primitive to maintain the over-arching theme of the movies that the technologically superior can be undone by the underdog.
You never mentioned the space battles, which I think are great, some of the best action and acting in any of the films. The scene when they attack the death star and the Falcon goes in is just great. I wish they'd done more space battle stuff, really.
Ill take the Ewok and Logs vs Stormtroopers fight over the water balloon fight fight from the Phantom Menace (I dont care what they are really called, they looked like water balloons) any day of the week.
I can't believe you didn't mention the scene where Leah gets short in the arm, the stormtroopers are about to capture them then Leah pics the gun, Han says "I love you" and Leah says "I know" !!!! It was so awesome I screamed!!
Vader's conflict in the original theatrical version works so well because they had a director who knew what he was doing. Later Lucas thought "Screw that guy, I know how to make it better, even thought episodes I-III and the special editions have been shat on by most people"
Jeremy you took the words out of my mouth when you said "this one broke my back". The moment Vader turns on the sidious is actually my favourite movie moment ever and GL DESTROYED IT!!! Thanks GL, thank you very much.
Wlof25 wow. your right with that. I always hated that "nooooooooo". they could've just left it with "no that's not true that's impossible!" that's luke telling Vader to cut the bullshit. then like two seconds later when he yells that "noooooo" it's like he suddenly believes him.
When Leia says, that she rememberd her mother...maybe she talks about her stepmother. Because she was adopted and maybe her stepmother died, when she was little.
Top 6 Star Wars movies in my opinion. 6. The phantom menace. Reasons: Jar Jar, fucking kid responsible for stopping and invasion wtf, darth maul died. 5. Attack of the clones. Reasons: way to much pointless speech, movie should have centered around Obi wans and Anakins relationship not Padme. Only one scene where clones appear in a relevant way. 4. Return of the jedi. Reasons: Although it was a great film i cant just suppress the fact that fucking teddy bears destroyed the an entire legion of the empires best troops. Bobba Fett death was just overwhelmingly stupid. 3. Revenge of the Sith. Reasons: We finally get to see a cool Anakin Skywalker. The rise of Darth Vader was very awesome and the first scene of the movie was incredible. The fight between Obi Wan and Anakin was very good but it would have been better if Episode 2 had focused on their relationship. 2. A new hope. Reasons: Very good movie, really liked the stormtroopers hitting targets in the first scene. The only stupid thing about this movie is the Death Stars weak spot. That was VERY stupid. 1. The empire strikes back. Reasons: the entire movie is a master piece. Only critic is that the AT ATs explode when they fall to the ground for no reason. Sorry for my English.
I always knew that Darth Vader was Luke's father, ever since the first original Star Wars. Why? Because Vader means "father" in dutch and I happen to speak it, lol :)
I hate what the Ewoks stand for, but I do love them just because they make me feel good about that movie. That last party with the Yub Nub song made me happy, partly because of those Ewoks man. And when that one died and his buddy tried telling him to get up and he stayed down... Sad shit.
Ok, what is wrong with the Ewoks? I think that they were awesome. These were the representation of the little guy taking on the big bad Empire. Basically, your David and Goliath story. The Ewoks were badass. They wanted to EAT Luke, Han, and Chewy. As a matter of fact at the end of the movie when they were celebrating one of the Ewoks was using the Storm Troopers helmets as a drum set. Question: what happened to their bodies? It was already established that they don't mind eating humans. The Ewoks weren't OP either. They had to figure out how to take down the AT-STs which were killing them. The Ewoks were able to get to the Storm Troopers because they set up an ambush. There were no clear lines of battle. The arrows were able to penetrate their armor which was fine. Their hammers on the helmet worked because blunt force even on helmet can still kill you. This is how sick the Ewoks were. While they were bludgeoning a man to death, they were laughing knowing that they now had dinner. And yet I am supposed to believe that they were childish. What children's cartoons were you watching?
Hi, Jeremy! Just finished watching all your Lord of the Ring and Star Wars reviews for like... the 7th time since you posted them. They're like a good movie you have at home and like to rewatch from time to time! Thank you for the vids and keep up the great work! PS: Love your personifications! d^_^b
My logic for why Young Anakin would appear is because that was his last moment as Anakin Skywalker, that's how he looked before he became Darth Vader. The moment he became a sith was the moment Anakin died and Vader was born.
Vader had no soul, Anakin died when Padme died, and Anakin was completely burned so even if he was old his face and body were not sustainable, Anakins young body was healthy and strong so thats why they switched the old Anakin to the young Anakin (aka Hayden) which i like and it also gives a reason why they should bring back Hayden for episode 8 and 9 as a force ghost
Return of the Jedi is my favorite of the original trilogy. I know most people and critics like Empire better, but I am a sucker for redemption themes and this one had it in spades. Don't get me wrong, I think Empire is also excellent. Regarding your comment about Leia saying she remembers her mother, in light of the prequels, it could be she is referring to her foster mother. We know very little about her life on Alderan.....and I have come to accept because Padme died seconds after the birth of the twins, Leia is referring to her foster mother as who she remembers in her dreams. It's not clear if Leia was ever told she was adopted. And she could be like a lot of adopted kids refer to their adopted parents as the real parents. Luke on the other hand always knew he was raised by his aunt and uncle and therefore has no memory of his parents. Love your reviews JJ.
This is my favorite star wars movie out of the series even if the other ones where almost perfect (i also think that they removed the noooooo dialogue in the blu ray version)
Cause it was a completely and utterly pointless and stupid change. In the Original scene, good camera work and music perfectly showed that Vader was conflicted in that moment without having to say a single line of dialogue. And Lucas utterly destroyed that with him screaming nooooooo, and not just that but the way he says it is so laughable. That's why. Luke screamed 'no' cause he was in shock. Why in the hell did Vader scream no exactly? Shit Jeremy himself explained why it's stupid. Vader screamed 'no' in Sith and it has been consistently mocked and parodied in how utterly laughable it is.
Bane Knightfall Irrelevant. Empire Strikes Back shown that screaming noooo is what people scream and we see it again. Jeremy is a fanboy who obviously is overbiased when talking about the SW and original triology. Maybe he yelled noooo in the Sith because nooo was used in Empire and you cant complain about it unless you want to say that Empire nooo was also lame. That is something called logic, If nooooo is lame line, then nooooo is lame whither used in Empire, or Sith. Second thing. If one can scream nooooo when in shock by finding out the truth, then it stands to reason that one can scream noooo when one sees his loved one being tortured and almost killed, or being in shock by finding out the truth that the dark side, which he served over 20 years, was wrong.
No it's not irrelevant. Vader screaming nooooo in Jedi is the most retarded change ever. There was no reason for him to scream no. Also you seem to fail utterly understand. When Luke screamed no it worked due to the context of the situation. When Vader screamed no, it was just utterly laughable and made no sense. Again Jeremy explained in his video why it was a stupid change.
Definitely the entire confrontation, Vader/Sidous vs Luke. The hiding in the shadows, Sidous taunting luke, the reflection of lighting of off Vader's helmet, damn this film is awesome.
Agree with you buddy if you've grown up with star wars (The Originals) you loved, them but mostly for the effects, the action and fucking lightsabers man !! But the greatness of Star Wars and the epicness lies in the story about good and evil, it contains everything that gets people emotionally invested in anything: friendship, sacrifice, struggle, temptation of evil and the power of forgiveness and reconciliation in the end.
