Lenny White is one of the most precise drummers ever. Never rushes, never hurried, just nails it beautifully. He also has great groove. He's actually leading this band from the back to a great degree, and with these fellows, that's saying something.

RIP :( CHICK COREA - As a member of Miles Davis's band in the late 1960s, he participated in the birth of jazz fusion. In the 1970s he formed Return to Forever. Along with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, he is considered one of the major piano voices to emerge in jazz during the post-John Coltrane era

I was there when Chick and the guys auditioned Al and it was amazing! After everyone left I said to Chick, 'so how did it go?' With a wide smile he said, "Rich he never took his eyes off the Music!" not for a second"! "Never looked at his Guitar!" That's when I knew Al was in! 19 years old! Amazing to have been there! Lovingly, Richard Grasso. I also recorded with Chick in 1974, our managers were looking for a record deal for me as an Artist. Got the deal a year later! 3 of my songs we recorded together would up on that Album. See Discogs Richard Grasso 1 on Tiger Lily Records. Yes! Just he & I back and forth on different instruments, well we only had The Arp & The Moog synthesizers back then and a little Farfisa organ! Chick plays great Drums if you didn't already know!

The greats are like a good wine, they get even better with time ! Return To Forever is one of my favorite 70's fusion band, along with Weather Report, Mahavishnu, Jean-Luc Ponty, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, George Duke and Billy Cobham. I always love how Return To Forever were able to switch from electric to acoustic, and sound so good in both. I am lucky to have a chance to see Stanley Clarke perform twice, and blessed to see Chick Corea perform twice with his acoustic-electric band, in 1988 and in 2016. I had a chance to talk to him after the concert, what a great Man. R.I.P Chick...

I'll never forget the great comedian Steve Allen (the original TV talk show host before Johnny Carson, and a rather fine pianist himself) introducing him at a concert I was at, stumbling around on stage, having trouble reading a piece of paper (unsure of who was going to play), looking at the scrap of paper, squinting his eyes, and introducing... "some chick from Korea." RIP my dear Chick Corea. I grew up with you my entire musical life. It brings me tears to think of all the musical joy you brought us. So sorry to see you go. So happy you blessed us with your astounding, astonishing and marvelous music that took us all to another planet with you. What a GIANT he was. How lucky we were to know him.

Really? I don't think they are the greatest. I think they are amongst the greatest, but I wouldn't put them at the top of the list. Here's why. If you had the 1st generation of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report (with Jaco) and Return To Forever on the same bill back in let's say 1973, Mahavishu would have been the headliner. PERIOD… They would completely blown everyone else off the stage. I saw these bands in the 70's, and that's MY expert opinion…. RTF was just more accessible.. But the thing that got me with RTF was that they had their solos written out back in the 70's. and that's what totally takes away from the improvisational aspects of being a "jazz fusion" band.. I was heart broken when I found out...
@stevekatz4372

I think you will get a very good argument with Weather Report and even King Crimson, right!
@Oneness100
@Oneness100 2 года назад
@@stevekatz4372 King Crimson I would consider a Prog Rock band.. But if you are talking about who would headline if you had all of the fusion bands in their prime at the same concert? Mahavishnu would undoubtely have headlined and they would have blown doors off the place.. I've seen MO, RTF and Weather Report and without question, MO was completely mind blowing.. None of these bands would have wanted to go on stage after MO.

And that's just from the top of my head. ;-/

Yeah ... that is quite a list you made! Sounds like we have similar eclectic tastes in jazz. From my end, I would add a few Brazilians into the mix, Elis Regina, Hermetu, Milton Nascimento, Tonhino Horta, Joyce, and of course Tom Jobim. Come to think of it, it would be interesting to imagine a head to head comparison between American Jazz and Brazilian Bossa/MPB.
@doc2skate
@doc2skate 9 лет назад
Steve Martin First, let me say thank you for this list of great artists. I'm always searching for music I haven't yet heard. Jobim I recognize immediately from his CTI Jazz days. By sheer coincidence, I was listening to the "Magic Moment" music by Marcio Montarroyos (which I owned back in the early 80's) on RU-vid while reading your reply. Is it any wonder why Brazil is listed as one of the happiest places on earth? Again, thanks.
@stevemartin4249
@stevemartin4249 9 лет назад
doc2skate Hey doc ... if you are still exploring those Brazilian horizons ... my top recommendations for albums are 'Tom & Elis' and 'Passarim' for Jobim's slightly later albums, Milton's 'Club de Esquina' is classic MPB, and Joyce's 'Feminina' was ground breaking Brazilian fusion when it came out. And I think there are scattered clips of Hermetu Pascoal Live at Montreux on RU-vid ... his early stuff was wild ... kind of like Frank Zappa meets Bitches Brew. 'Slaves Mass' - where he pinches a pig for musical effects are one of my favorites - though I heard the SPCA got on his ass for that one ;-) ... and of course his frequent collaborators, Airto and Flora are among my favorites. If you go for Flora's 3 octave scatting, screeching, and screaming (I do!) - her album 'Milestone Memories' is hard to beat. A more recent album or two that is REALLY well done as a testament to Tom Jobim are the collaborations between Sakamoto Ryuichi on piano and Jaques (sp?) and Paoula Morrelebaum (I probably misspelled their names ... but the music is sublime). For great individual songs, there are so many I have yet to discover, and I am likely to fall in love with a new song every week, but among my favorites are Ivan Lins 'Velas Icadas' and Toninho Horta's 'Aqui Oh!' ... looking forward to hearing reactions and recommendations from you.

Saw this tour from close to the stage in a gym at Weslyan University, Middletown, CT, in May 1976. Still have the ticket stub & newspaper advert. These 4 guys had an uncanny ability to play in sync, as well as play counterpoint to each other, as good as anyone I've ever heard. One of my "Big 3" fusion bands, along with the original Mahavishnu Orchestra (saw them 5 times), Weather Report (especially the Alphonso & Jaco lineups). And shout outs to the many other great '70s jazz/rock bands: J.L. Ponty, H. Hancock's Headhunters, L. Coryell/Eleventh House, Brand X, T. Williams Lifetime, & Bruford, along with some of the ensembles & lps by F. Zappa, J. Beck, Gong & others more associated with rock. And, in his own category, the guy who (imho) he generally spawned the genre: Miles.

What I especially liked about it is that it appears to be very much improvised. They are all watching each other and feeding off each other. Had to have been great to see live. They all still have the right stuff! !

Dave H. That’s Jazz, there is a basic framework, then everyone improvises within it and feeds off each other. You should listen to a Miles Davis and John Coltrane play together, the Someday My Prince Will Come” album is a good example with two takes of the same song on the same album, both are incredible.

These guys compliment each other so well. I love how in tune Al Di Meola is with Chick Corea's ideas. His melodic contributions on the first tune compliment Corea's lines and scales beautifully.

I saw RTF with this lineup in 1975 at the University of Washington Student Building for $5. They were all in their 20s. There was no stage as they played on the floor. There were no chairs...or seats. Everyone stood...or sat on the floor. We were lucky enough to sit right up front....7 feet from Stanley Clarke. RTF is the best live band ever!!! Thanks for sharing....

I was a kid from the suburbs near D.C. ...listened to typical F.M.radio stuff, Stones, Aerosmith, Kiss, etc...and I saw Return To Forever on a late night concert show playing and I lost it. I had never seen anybody play this type of music before...I was done! A bit later I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra on the same channel and I was completely done! The level of musicianship was unbelievable...I still listen to what I had been listening to, but much more...Thank you !

After a very fine performance, they front the stage together and are saturated with the love and passion of their audience. Many many years of experience between them, they communicate the music with each other and confirm each movement with silent expressions. This is the oneness of connected souls. Though Mr Corea has crossed over to our future, I am certain these souls are connected eternally.

Back in the early 70s, when I was a student at MSU, I lived down the block from the Stables. It was a brand new bar. My best friend said, "Hey, let's go check the place out tonight. When we got in, there was no audience, yet, just us. We sat at the front table, right in front of where the band was set up. These four guys walked in (RTF) and started to play. We had never heard of Chick Corea (or even of jazz fusion). They absolutely blew us away. It was one of the most amazing live performances I have ever heard. RIP, Chick. you changed the music world!

I just heard about the passing Chicka Corea, for all y’all that came up as young teenagers and those that were introduced to this great music you came up in the best of times listening to like Return To Forever. You remember where you where, who you may have been with, see I remember cause I was 11 in 71 and an Cousin turned me on the fusion sound of Jazz. I’ve been hood ever since, one my favor is the Mad Hatter by Chicka Corea. He and many musicians who have gone before him are missed. Please y’all of the Older generation, play this music what ever your doing so the neighbors, children & grand children can enjoy what We enjoyed in our younger years turn them on to Jazz & Fusion Jazz, let them experience what real instruments are, remember Jazz Music is a Culture to be heard and shared by everyone it’s a Universal Language. R.I.P Chicka Corea, your sound is greatly missed and will be admired and hopefully shared. 👍🏾🪶🪶🪶🪶🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹
