Wilburn this group was considered the supergroup of the early jazz fusion period. Each one is considered as one of the best at their craft. They have all had solo careers and have played with everybody who is anybody. Weather Report, the Crusaders, Herbie Hancock Headhunters, and later Fourplay all are great jazz/fusion bands you as a musician should appreciate.

I remember this performance. It was on PBS, and it was the first time I ever saw the band play live. I remember being amazed at how well they played. They were unlike anything I'd ever heard. I was every bit as impressed when I saw them in person with Larry Coryell And The Eleventh House opening. It was the first concert I ever went to. I became such a fusion freak back then. Return To Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report meant the world to me.

Feb 9th 2021 Chick (79 years old) left us but left behind a massive amount of recordings, God Bless his soul. I got to see this line up in NYC and they were so insync it was unreal. Hope you explore each individual's body of work whether as a reaction or just for the pure joy. They were at the forefront of jazz fusion, along with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Larry Coryell's Eleventh House, Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters, etc., all following in the footsteps of Miles Davis.

Really great having you play a bona fide classic like this. RTF along with the Mahavishnu Orchestra defined the early days of jazz fusion. All these players were a part of the band. Lenny White the drummer is one of the most under-rated great drummers of the last 50 years. He was in his prime with RTF when this video was filmed. It is felt by many that Lenny kind of got left in the shadow of fellow legend Billy Cobham who came into worldwide prominence just a bit before Lenny. I saw them live in this period and the point where they were trading licks in diminishing beats was so outrageous live. Thanks again for the deep dive.

Chick Correa piano, Stanley Clarke bass, and Lenny White drums, all are well known in jazz. Al Dimeola the guitarist was probably the most "rock" of that particular version of Return To Forever but as you can hear and see he's a beast as well.

I am so thrilled to see you having a listening party for Return to Forever. In the seventies Jazz/Rock fusion was pretty big and they were at the forefront. My brother introduced me to them with their album Romantic Warrior. My brother played trombone in Jazz band at the local high school so his choices in the music he listened to had a huge influence on my tastes. With the recent passing of Chic Corea their music as well as his other work has rightfully been brought back for us all to enjoy. This was the version of the group that played on the Romantic Warrior album: Chic Corea on Keyboards, Stanley Clarke on Bass, Lenny White on drums, and Al Di Meola on guitar.

I was such a big fan of Return To Forever, Weather Report (during the "Orange Lady" period) and The Mahavishnu Orchestra at that time. I saw these guys once during this period and Mahavishnu 3 times all with in a 2 years. It was my intro into jazz and I've never looked back. Check out Lenny White with Rene Rosnes and the great Chris Potter on her latest album "Beloved Of The Sky" which is such a terrific record. Stanley Clarke and Al DiMeola (along with Lenny of course) are still alive and performing. After the COVID 19 restrictions are removed go and see all of these performers if you get a chance. One of the great differences between rock and jazz is, since rock is about attitude, ego and money its impossible to meet those guys. Jazz guys however are approachable. So after a performance chat them up as much as you want.

Dude, « the guy on the keys » is Chick Corea who just passed away - one of the Jazz greats. That Was the official band for about four years. Four of the finest musicians: Chick, Stanley Clarke on bass, Al Di Meola guitar, and Lenny White drums. They made three fabulous studio albums with that line-up, classic jazz rock fusion.

Digging deep Chod? Return to Forever is probably in the top 3 of all Jazz-Fusion bands. To me they are #1, like Zeppelin or Steely Dan is to their genre. This IS a rabbit hole. Their most acclaimed effort is the "Romantic Warrior" album that literally, in 1976, blew my mind how music was being transformed to combine progressive jazz and rock together. Probably more improv jazz than rock but to those who were inclined to Jazz/Rock genre we were transfixed!! I love the members of this SUPER band. SOMG Stanley Clarke. Chick Corea just passed. I am blessed just to say I saw him a few years ago Live at Catalina B&G with Herbie Hancock.

So glad you found Return To Forever. They were together for several years. Chick Corea is one of the greatest keyboard players of the 20th century. Lenny White is mind blowing on the drums. Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola.... so good! A band that played at a level that may not be reached again. The unique timing of that music, as jazz crossed with rock and those analog, electric instruments and amps showed up, created a unique output of mind blowing music for about 10 years in that time. The first time I heard this, I had the same reaction as Sting did - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pLcOP7SZNL4.html

Lenny White on drums is amazing, such an economy of movement in his body as his hands and wrists are flying around. I saw them live here in St Louis just a few years ago, same lineup except Frank Gambale was on guitar instead of DiMeola. If you react to more RTF, which I hope you do, I would start with Romantic Warrior album and Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy. The earliest albums are more jazzy and spacey and not as much to my liking as the later harder edged stuff like you heard here. For a song choice I would suggest Hymn to the Pharoah Kings which is epic, or The Game Maker. I love that you're doing this stuff man.
