Back again with another Yu-Gi-Oh! anime analysis, Battle city turned out to be even better than duelist kingdom imo. Hope you enjoy this retrospective #yugioh #battlecity #anime
we need the entire manga adapted to the anime, i would absolutely love that, and in 3 years will be the franchises 30th anniversary, i can think of no better time, and an honor to takahashi senseis memory, than to have a proper anime adaptation of the manga, maybe they could improve on the final duel between atem and priest seto, as that was actually takahashi senseis biggest regret when wrapping up the series
One thing that makes me not like the dub of this arc is the change of Joeys reasons for wanting to duel during battle city. It's about a promise to a friend to earn back red-eyes and become a true duelist. Joeys rival is Yugi this arc as much as it is Seto. Joey also shows us how much he as a duelist has improved acting as a mirror of the audience using cards that someone with not much money can afford. He stands up to Marik twice and proves that his duelist spirit is stronger than Mariks Egyptian magic. The ending shows Yugi and Joey dueling for the crown as Joey should have beaten Marik but he losed because of the shadow game. Joeys dueling for pride and that's one of the things I wish 4kids would have kept as it makes Joey seem more human.
God I cried really hard at the end of his duel with marik, seeing joey die, was just insane. Even though he came back, it's the fact that... Joey isn't like everyone else. He's a poor teen who's parents are divorced. He doesn't have magic, he isn't insanely rich and can get any card he wants. He was an average Joe who loved his little sister, loved his friends, and then he took that hit from marik, he kept standing, but right before he could win, he died, right as his little sister showed up. Joey is, and always will be, my favorite og character.
I remember when battle city first started airing on kids WB, I was 6-7 years old, just finished watching duelist kingdom. The concept was so cool and the Egyptian god cards were just if not cooler than exodia. Such good times
@@richborn6700it’s only like 24 episodes which really isn’t that bad, but it definitely dragged on when you were a kid especially because a new episode premiered every week so it took like 6 months to complete that arc lol
Yugi never used his millennium puzzle to defend himself or his friends. I always found it a bit infuriating. You could arguably say that he still was not knowledgeable to fully tap into its power. The original manga sort of gets rid of that argument because dark yugi was very capable of using the puzzle. Why didn’t he use it to free his friends from Merrik’s mind control? Or to free strings? The rate hunters who blocked his path when he was running to find Joey, he could have easily mind crushed or took them out with it. And in waking the dragons, he could have called and taken them to the shadow realm, the seal of oricalcos would not have worked in the shadow realm. He could have at any time used his puzzle to materialize a real duel monster, one that is not a hologram.
I'd love a what if. Like for example, what if Joey actually beat marik and faced off vs yugi with Ra. Or what if Kaiba beat yugi and faced off vs Marik. Imagine Marik trying to use the millenium rod to create a shadow game but the rod not working because of it's connection to Seto. So many possibilities.
I think the sub did Kaiba dirty It isn’t that he doesn’t tho k it’s real but more that he doesn’t care He’s so focused on regaining his title and beating yugi The same goes for Joey It’s all these characters (with Marik as well) who want to beat yugi for different reasons that made this arc so good
i love kaiba in the dub, eric stuart cant be beat voicing kaiba, but its annoying how stupid they make his so in denial to all the Egyptian magic and visions of the past, that he just ignores it to win a childrens card game, and count the increase in each one of his stock shares
That battle city arc felt like the android to cell saga to what it was in DBZ. Real Cinema. Real dialogue. That shit in the sub was special. The dub is HORRENDOUS.
Marik was a trash villain, Odion would've won that duel against Joey with his Serket. Instead Marik made him play the fake Ra, which he explains failed horribly every time previously but thought Odion would be able to do it, causing him to get struck down and lose the duel. The fact that they had to replace him with an 'evil side' shows how garbage he is.
Dark Marik wasn't really that great either, though. Both Mai and Joey seemed poised to beat him until the writers literally hijacked the progression of their duels with ridiculous Ra plot armor. I mean the least they could've done was make this guy scary skilled and outduel them both. But he doesn't. He just has some BS plot armor so Yugi can be the one to defeat him.
Yugi essentially already beats Marik twice before he even sees him in person. With characters like Pegasus, and even Noah, I get the sense that the villain is in control of the situation and that the main characters are at their mercy. Making them credible threats. Marik doesn’t have that because he and his rare hunters keep failing.
