Recommendation: I really love the top right smart-watch UI, however it bothers me that the character doesn`t wear it. Just a minor change like a black line of pixels on one of his wrists would do the trick I think! Would improve immersion for detail oriented people. First time watching your videos, keep up the good work :)

On the two bars for corruption and stamina: bars as UI is fine and well understood, but the way you're using the bars is confusing. For the stamina bar, full = good, but for the corruption bar, full=bad. The semantics of each bar are opposite, which means that during intense gameplay when you're just glancing at the bars, you have a higher cognitive load to decipher what each bar actually means. In general, in most games I've seen, "full=good" is the far more predominant semantic representation (and I would say makes the most intuitive sense). So I would suggest recasting the corruption bar as some kind of "health" bar that empties out as the player becomes more and more corrupted. That way both bars match in an intuitive way.
@Michael-The-Composer

Yeah that's a really good observation

And maybe an icon on the left side of each bar representing what it's for would be nice

I think the problem with the corruption bar is just that it's placed above the stamina bar, it just makes more sense that the corruption bar "full=bad" since you are gaining corruption, so it would make more sense to place the corruption bar either above the toolbar, or down the stamina bar, just above the middle of the screen, so they have noticeable distance between them so you have to watch either bar in order to know what's the state of your player tho putting it just above middle screen wouldn't look good if there's no a health bar above the stamina bar, since the corruption bar is larger, if health bar is above it kinda makes the trick so they look good and obviously puttin icons at the left side of each bar would help a lot

I really like your devlogs! You're not trying to be funny with bad jokes, wacky editing etc., and filling up most of the video with jokes and skits and little gameplay progress like most other game devs RU-vidrs do. You're get straight to the point quickly and have a more chillaxed vibe that I really like. Loving the progress! :D

Maybe it's just me, but I think that the main character should get an art rework. It does not look too bad, but I think it deserves a special attention since it is something you will be looking at all the time when playing the game.

Great video my friend! Congratulations on the promotion to lead too :) Definitely take the time to properly work out your new weights, and see the best way to balance them all. I think what you said for the videos going forward is the right move, I tend to do mine in the attitude with "I enjoy making these [videos[, but I don't want them to take all of my time" Also I think the stamina delay is a great touch! Nice work overall!

A couple things I would change/add to the stamina bar: 1 - When your idle/standing still your stamina will go up faster. 2 - When you use up all of your stamina and it is red it should go up slower than normal.

Seeing that hat gave me an idea; what if different islands had temperature differences, and different gear would allow you to explore better? For example, a hot desert island would require a hat, such as the one seen in the video, in order to move around, or else your vision would be brightened and partially obstructed by sun rays, or maybe a colder island would require you to wear snow goggles or some kind of protective jacket so that you don’t get slowed down while moving? That might be kinda cool for the future.
@Asty__
@Asty__ 2 года назад
That's such a nice idea! Though in terms of gameplay and inventory/gear management, I hope it wouldn't be too tedious to equip and unequip (or even think about it if you know it beforehand) before or while exploring. Maybe there could be a way to sort of automatically equip the right gear depending on those areas to remove that tedious aspect? Do you have another idea regarding that?
@randomish2757
@randomish2757 2 года назад
@@Asty__ I thought about it, and maybe you can go to the area without the gear, but then when you travel between islands to those areas, it would automatically equip the gear you want, or maybe there would be a wardrobe system where you have different outifits you can put on on the boat, and you store the gear in the wardrobe and then you have different outfits that you can wear, or just put on specific parts of the outift. Something like that probably. And furthermore, maybe there could be some cool things (flora, fauna, and gear/materials) that can be found on these varied temperature islands that can’t be found anywhere else.

Hey! You're Devlogs have always been stellar, but I think there is PLENTY of room for you to cut some of the things you typically do in your devlogs and still have them be just as inspirational, calming, and informative as they have been. Trying not to worry about a script too much, and try cutting back some of the B roll you try to capture. You're videos are some of the highest quality ones in the realm of devlogs by miles. You can certainly afford to cut that down, still be excellent, and hopefully clear some of the mental load you're feeling. Take care!

*Recommendations:* For the stamina bar, you should you add feedback when you run out, for example some racing games show a spark from the exhaust. Maybe also add feedback to the health bar, if you are in combat, you might not be able to look at the bar (your are focusing where you character and hostal creatures are), you should add affects such as vignette or a similar affect that you can see with your peripheral vision.

Love it as usual, for the sprint/dash setup you should certainly add a dash to above-water as well. The combat would feel much more smooth with a dodge. Also vice-versa add a sprint along with a dash in the underwater sections.

If you want to make the corruption increasing more visually apparent, you could add a border effect around the camera that slowly creeps in, sort of narrowing the players vision as they are closer and closer to being corrupted.

Really important topic, thanks for sharing your thoughts. It happens to all of us, and you're one of the most level-headed, introspective people I've ever seen in identifying that it's happening to you and forming a solid plan to attack it. That said, we must realize that brains are complicated, and as much as I'd like to believe "mind over matter" is always possible, real life is a lot harder than that for a ton of reasons. If you "fail" over the next 21 days, don't beat yourself up, just continue to introspect and reflect and adjust your plan to meet whatever needs you have in your current life. Don't try to force yesterday's solution to work for you today. Improvise, adapt and overcome, as they would say. Best of luck, looking forward to whatever you get up to next!

Motivation and discipline to work on a project is always my biggest problem. I usually start extremely motivated and every day is fun as things are coming to life and challenges are resolved. Then there is a huge part that is the rest of the game that does not interest me much and its a chore to even sit down and do something. Which is why the vast majority of my projects are prototypes or proof of concepts just to see if some challenge could be met. Watching your videos you still spend a lot of time on the engine stuff which looks very much like my approach, but there is a time where you actually have to make it into a game. I'd recommend you to balance these two parts of it, try to flesh out the actual game, all the islands, what challenges there will be, what makes one more interesting than the other and other things like that. If it feels too generic and repetitive then that is your main challenge. Being stuck in the engine-loop also means feature-creep and those might not be what you need for the actual game to be fun.

I feel like the stamina should be indicated more close to the center of the screen in some way, because having it tucked away in the top left corner could potentially lead to issues in high intensity combat situations or when otherwise focusing on gameplay. Having a reminder of your stamina or that your stamina is low in general near where the player will be looking would be a great QoL feature to have. As for the indicator itself, it could be a piece of UI, but perhaps it might be better to have it with something less intrusive like sweat particles or animation changes. It should be easily noticeable and hard to confuse with other features in the game, but not intrusive so as to potentially pull you out of the game/moment. Just my opinion, but I think something like that would be nice to have in a game with stamina

It could be fun & look nice to have an underwater lunge that zooms you quickly in a direction but uses up stamina… it would give you a chance to zip out of danger quickly, but at a larger stamina cost. Little details like this can really make a combat system more fun to use, and could even be used to build puzzles. (For example, a timed door that you can only get through by lunging through it.) Plus, it’s fun graphically to watch the character quickly kick their little legs to gain that momentum right before they zoom off. It gets you away from that thing where the character always swims the same way with the same looping animation regardless of how they’re moving, which works but looks a bit amateur.

My bet and personal experience is, the more intentional and disciplined you try to be on something, the less sustainable it will become, and unknowingly it will fade into the abyss of undone things. The more I forced myself to turn "passions" into productive things, the more they slipped away and "passions" where somewhere else. So maybe you'll have short term boost of activity, but at some point I bet you'll have even less things done on this channel and project if you try to become more disciplined than what you already are. Even if you didn't mentionned it, I find it funny that you had the biggest gap between this video and the last one on your channel, and that the last video was about "working" on Dauphin. The passion maybe turned a little bit more into a duty, which we never like doing first as human beings.

I've been wondering, is this your full time job? How many hours do you spend on it on average per day?

Honestly I wouldn't mind if you update less frequently. If it keeps you on track, then less polished videos are fine as well :)
