My father, Richard, was 173rd Airborne. So I grew with a fondness, love and admiration for those of the 173rd. My Pop saw battle. Thank you for your service.
173rd best unit in the Army Thank you guys truly a proud group of soldiers my heart is with all of you for the ones that were laid to rest and are still alive 💪
I'm writing this on May 29, 2017. I turned 70 over a month ago, so I don't know how much longer I'll be around should anyone care to respond. I was with the 173rd from Oct. 65 to Oct. 66, and I was with 1st platoon, 3rd. squad, Alpha Company, 1st of the 603d. I was a clerk when I arrived and went directly to a rifle platoon, 1st platoon. Only because the 1st Sergeant reassigned me to headquarters 6 months later am I alive today, or at least in one piece. As someone else wrote, it was a defining moment in my life and remains, as always, the remaining "happening" for what remains. Life has been interesting overall and I've been on Easy Street, but for my time with the 173rd. Looking back I'm glad, proud, that I served with the 173rd, but must admit the Vietnam episode leaves much doubt in my mind. I served with professional soldiers and they must have been among the best if not the best; I'm often annoyed by arrogance from others when referring to their branch or MOS, but I'm satisfied that my time with Alpha Company was well spent, overall. It made me somehow "special" and it's the high point of my life, as it turns out. Not many of my original group remain consider the half century since those events. I hope my comments are OK. I should have added that there's so few comments here and this production is first rate. Someone spent some time and money on it. And where did all the film come from?
My cousin Ernest Madrid was in the 173rd brigade he was killed in action on January 31st 1969 Larry Speed was his medic I want to thank each and everyone of you Vietnam vets for your service you guys are true heroes that went through hell but Kick-Ass God bless everyone & your Family's 173rd airborne brigade sky soldiers are number one
I've read about that event and it's something that I don't mind missing. I'm glad you made it. I can only bow my head in respect for those who didn't make it.
I was with the 173rd 2nd 503rd C Company 2nd Platoon in Vietnam June 1965. We had some great leaders and fighters at that time. See my pictures taken at that time on YTube 173rd Airborne Brigade 1965 Vietnam Revised 1. We were the original 173rd soldiers that arrived in Vietnam in 1965.
My father was an E-6 in the 503rd of the 101st Airborne in 1957 when I was born. He was a senior non-com in the 101st and had his "100 jumps" by 1960. My dad died in July of 1967 when I was 9 years old. The 101st gave some of their Best. My dad will be "forever young" in my childhood memories. Vietnam was a total waste of some very good men...
I'd say that "I'm sorry for your loss," but that's not enough. I was 173rd, 1st battalion, Alpha Company, 3rd squad from 65-66 (part of which headquarters); I'm alive because I was sent to headquarters. Your dad meant a great loss to the Army and nation because he was an NCO, trained, and doing the real work. Best to you. eddie evans PFC Evans
Thanks. Since I was so young when I lost my dad I will always remember him as Bigger Than Life and a War Hero. Even now, as I am almost 60 and have over 36 years with the DoD I still feel like a little guy when I think of my dad. Airborne!
We’ll your Dad is a true hero!! Thank you for his sacrifice and service! My uncle Charles was 101st and used to teach cadets to jump at West Point back in the day! My Dad and Uncle Steve are both 173rd and luckily made it home. My Dad got a Purple Heart after he stepped on a land mine in 1969. He destroyed every challenge thrown his way for another 53 years until Covid took him out a month ago. When I was 10 I had the honor and privilege of meeting Chris Erickson the medic who saved my Dads life and mine. My Uncle Steve made it home in one piece but has really bad PTSD. He received a Bronze Star with Valor for performing first on his lieutenant in the middle of an ambush and made it back to his machine gun and fired until the VC retreated. All of my love to every herd brother and sister and their families🇺🇸💜🇺🇸 AATW!
My daddy is Charles Bly he was in the 173rd Airborne 1st Platoon/Company B/2nd Batalion. He was in 1966, and got out mid 1967 right before DAT To. I'd love to be able to connect him with anyone who may remember him. I know most of his Company was wiped out soon after he left. He said he thought only 1 soldier remained..
My Daddy was a Sky Soldier! I’m learning so much after his passing! Thank you for sharing your stories! I am currently writing his 173rd/Nam memoirs based on his letters. Harrowing and Hilarious! I had no idea. Please follow his story and let me know if you know if you have anything to share! He’s got so many photos etc I would love to share with the families and see if someone else has info/photos of my Dad! RU-vid is amazing and now I know why my Dad was on here so much. But he didn’t talk much about the war except for funny anecdotes. I miss and love him so much! @mydaddywasaskysoldier #mydaddywasaskysoldier
