I've always owned APBT's, but my last girl was a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. What an amazing dog. She just passed away at 14, and I doubt I'll ever own another breed.
I am in the US and have had 3 over the last 26 yrs, My first came from England. After him it was a challenge to find a pure bred Sfaffy here. I found my breeder and I am on my second Staffy from there. Excellent breeder and dogs. Rockstaff Kennels
The Irish staffy or long legged staffy is code for a pitbull type dog because of BSL in Britain ,there is only one true Staffordshire bull terrier and it’s from England.
The Irish and Scotland dog was in the mix I'm sure I think the blue Paul was in there too it goes back to the 1700 hundreds the staff is 1800 hundreds the ApBT very late 1800 hundreds ,this dog just didn't appear it was created

@@crissingram9035 yep the staffs are English but people get confused when some people bred the staffs with patterdals or other dogs thinking they're breeding an advantage, but I still rate the standard s.b.t , if anyone round my manor talks dogs and says " yeah I've just seen a tall s.b.t lol he will get clumped simple , no such thing as a tall s.b.t , it's a mongrel . Fact. There's only one s.b.t. and it's staying in England bro. Bless bruv.
Joe Mallon who was one of the original staffie fanciers, would today prefer the shape and size of the irish staffordshire to the original breed standard. I myself have had staffies from i was a teenager and my current staffie is KC registered. The original staffie was slightly bigger in size than the dogs we have today.
One of the best breed overviews from the US I have heard. My only complaint is that Birmingham isn't in Staffordshire but Telford is in South Staffordshire and is the heart of the old Stafford country with Birmingham to the south and Stoke-0n-Trent to the north being the boundaries of the breed in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Yes definitely agree you only have to look at old b&w photos of sbt to see they were taller. I believe peoples fascination with big heads had a lot to do with them being bred shorter legged. Imo the breed in the uk is being bred all wrong. Shorter muzzles seems to be popular which will only cause health problems later. The original sbt was imo a better looking dog i love the irish staffies. Many say irish staffies are a code word for pit bulls. My bitch is longer legged her head isnt big some say shes more of a terrier style staff i look at old b&w pics & see her likeness with the older type. Great work love the vids you do.
Yes you are correct, what happened was two things, first of all they used shorter variants of the breed to base their breed standard on, and then again in the late 1940s they actually shorted the breed standard by two inches. Shortening the breed standard while keeping the Staffordshire Bull Terrier's weight the same is how you get this overly short compact little bull and terrier. 👍
In England we call em long legged staffs it's understood that APBT originated from the Staffordshire Bull terrier crossed with a medium sized mastiff type
His beginning statement that they are one of the four breeds that originated from the "Bull & Terrier" was a good one, that alone is more accurate in concerns to delivering clear precise information than most of the comments section. I believe at one stage these dogs were used for "ratting" because as we know that had issues with rats in England, the plague etc. i also read somehwere that they made the original staffie smaller and alightly more docile in order for them to be kept as pets and for families, hence the nanny dog theme. One thing is for certain their agression is there for a reason, even in todays modern staffie it is there by no accident.

I would prefer these over any of the water down bully and exotic crosses. One it’s an original and most importantly a powerful dog this one will not have problems jumping or running. The Irish is rare but glad it’s still around. Dogs were meant for work not to be lazy and lay around.
Birmingham is not in the county of Staffordshire, it is the second largest city in the UK it is actually West Midlands metropolitan county, which is an urban borough. Secondly the area the that the breed developed in is "The Black Country", nothing to do with race but The Black Country gained its name in the mid nineteenth century due to the smoke from the many thousands of ironworking foundries and forges plus also the working of the shallow and 30ft thick coal seams. It is literally the birthplace of the industrial revolution, hence it's name. Other than that decent introduction to the breed.
I have a staffordshire remy mix. On the smaller side like 45 lbs. She's very dominant with dogs but a solid companion dog. I wouldn't trust her with protecting shit though🤣. I have a different dog for the property protection.
Many say the staffy Is what made the pitbull and the amstaff. Even though AKC recognised It late and the brittisk kennel club, the staffy been spotted in mid 1850’s aswell.
i understand what you mean, but really, that's a misconception. there were no staffies until the breed was registered. its the exact same as saying a bully was spotted in the 1850s. you can't retroactively go back and assign a breed name to dogs that weren't part of any breed at that point. there were many mixes and those were all bull and terriers prior to the registering of said breed.

The kennel clubs didnt dare to recognise the staffy until AKC did it, it was kind of an embarrasment that the americans recognised the staffy before the brittish.

The bronx bull is a good blood line originated from south africa it was a lovely dog in the 80s . I.just love Staffords i have two one is 12years old .and my red boy is 15 month .i.lost.my best boy aged 13 and a half 2 year ago tyson after aka mike he was a top dog 💯💪i do.like pit bulls but there two powerful.for me .but staff's can be small but really powerful..thanks for a good video.👌
I have grown up around staffys and recently got a new one after my old one died a few years ago she is the great grandughter of the blue bouncer who is a champion in the European championship
The amstaff is a made up name. They are nothing more than apbt. They only created the name amstaff to hang papers. Same dog just a different name so the kennel club would accept the apbt.
I was hoping someone would mention the Irish Staff! Sometimes I think I'm going bonkers! seeing French Bulldogs and people are calling them Staffys! There is no way like it or not, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier of today could have guarded property, or been ratters etc, the size and lack in function that they are now. Someone on here said Irish Staff is a code for pitbull because of the BSL in the UK when in reality, the Irish Staff is more true to the original type of the original Stafford not the short, fat Staffys you see now. They are killing the Staffordshire Bull Terrier off in the same way they killed off the original Bulldog. It's a real shame. When someone says there's only one true Staffordshire Bull Terrier and you hear people shouting out loud that it has to be pedigree ask yourself this, does the Staffy dog of today look like it could work on anything?
Partly agree with you partly don’t because not all pedigree are short and fat as you say in fact if you know the right breeders very good pedigree Stafford’s are out there but there is a lot of variations because every one thinks they are a dog breeder. It’s not just about how a dog looks it’s the temperament that takes long to refine, crossing dogs adds things into the temperament you can’t control or regulate, the Stafford is the original dog and the foundation. Pedigree dogs still can end up 18in at shoulders but would be to big for show but they are still in existence you just don’t see them. Caymenstaffs Stafford’s are pedigree but some can be very long in the leg and they still throw back to the old days don’t worry about that.
Mate a french bulldog looks absolutely nothing like a s.b.t , french bulldog has a smashed in muzzle where a s.b.t has a full muzzle so I ain't got a clue w.t.f your going on a out ? Who calls a Frenchie a staffy , lol like calling a Yorkie when it's a doberman..
No, in the 50s they started using showbread staff in Ireland to work with terriers. The Irish mongrelised them slightly mixed in ebt and working Wheaten.

@@rewind12354 The SBT breed standard was shortened two inches in the 1940s, but I do agree they look smaller now, thats show breeders for you. Where as American Staffordshire Terriers have gone the opposite direction and have now become these huge fat lumbering beasts waddling around the show rings. Show dog people tend to be very ignorant and uncaring of the dogs' true form and function.

Theres still some lines of s.b.t that have only been bred for gameness, not show or pets ,. Theres some here in England and Scotland and Ireland theres no difference between the irish Staffordshire bull terrier to the dogs ive been talking about in Ireland they got a strain of dogs they liked and purley keept them game ,training ect so they look different its the same different in America with there g.bred American Pitbull terrier to the am staff , lol see what i mean ones a pet the others hard core.
@@rewind12354 they did put pit in them. The type of man to work pits/staffs in the U.K. and Ireland was close to the lurcher men they don’t look for pure breeding just being able to do the job. Look up ch.psycho and a few more he was 1/8 pit not a lot but it’s in there.
The correct nickname for staffordshire bull terrier Is staffy. Alot of americans been calling their american staffordshire terriers for staffies, while the correct nickname Is amstaff. Sure you know that.
@@joshuagreenslade3445 the amstaff is an apbt, same dog. the name was created right here in America though. Colby and a few other dog breeders were trying to get their apbt's registered with the Akc. But they denied the pitbull as it had the name pit in it. The Akc was not interested in registering a dog associated with pit fighting. Colby being true to the breed, he worked so hard with, decided not to chase papers. There were several other dog men however that wanted to register their pitbulls anyways. So they simply changed their name to amstaff. So the Akc would accept them and they could hang papers. The amstaff and the apbt used to be the exact same dog at first. Because all it was about originally was getting them registered. Nowadays however the amstaff is selectively bred for appearance. So they are slightly bigger and heavier. But they are the same dog genetically. Also you can find the game in the amstaff and selectively breed it back in. My buddy down here in Texas hunts hogs and coyotes and he only uses amstaff dogs. He swears by them and nothing else. Although he has been selectively breeding for the game in them for quite sometime.
Sir, there was no bull and terrier cross in SBT. There is Bulldog and Pug cross in an English Bulldog which is so obvious. SBT and APBT are fancy names for bulldogs.
What a terrible name for a kennel - however, you did your research and you are right. Although not a separate breed, Irish staffies ARE slightly taller than the English ones which are starting to look like pugs, due to recent fashion trends (by women) who want their dogs to look like babies.
The original staff was bigger.kc have made them to small.same as bull dogs ect people call it Irish staff but it's how the original was made for athletic and healthy
@@jamesdean514 sound like a showdog man. I have seen many staffies in South Africa thats english staffy through and through but weigh 23-30kg. In proporsion. I have a 15.6kg, 15 month old bitch , as much a english staff as the 25kg staffies. O she is great at ratting , has caught some massive once(neighbour has lots of birds which draws the massive rats) , she is an "animal" , run at least 8km with my kids without trouble, if she was brought up that way she could be a working dog , more than enough drive.Sorry but lately I have seen much better looking staffies at 25 kg than at 17kg.Not because of greater size I must add. Cant handle a wimpy 10kg staffy.
@@jamesdean514 Because if you had a dog belonging to a breed that you purposely reduce its size by selective breeding at some point, you won't get throwbacks. All other breeds have throwbacks from time to time, even bullterriers without the "Roman" nose, the Staffies are an absolute exception. While I inderstand your skepticism, your statement is ludicrous, based on mere canine genetics.
